Good move by the guys doing this. Anytime that the message of peace, hope and love can be extended to new audiences, its a good thing.
I didn't know this! Thanks for the info...0 -
This was the perfect ending to a great show!
I was not expecting it and the way they did it was perfect. I never really listened to 99 problems before this, but this sure changed my mind about JayZ.2003: 7/14 NJ ... 2006: 6/1 NJ, 6/3 NJ ... 2007: 8/5 IL ... 2008: 6/24 NY, 6/25 NY, 8/7 EV NJ ... 2009: 10/27 PA, 10/28 PA, 10/30 PA, 10/31 PA

I'm pretty sure the "skinny little bitch" is meant ironically and the mosquito bite incident, ah well, that has been debated to death... I still remember the conversations going back and forth... The comments were harsh, but there is also something demeaning about a woman showing her tits the whole time...
That all said, after read this thread, I do believe that lyrics of 99 are indeed about profiling - which is an interesting take...Post edited by fortyshades on0 -

"Although the song is allegedly about being stopped by cops, the fact that he clearly says "if you're having GIRL problems...i got 99 problems but the BITCH ain't one" clearly suggests he's talking about a woman not a female dog. "
You wrote if your having girl problems... The lyrics you left out say "I feel bad for you son" which goes to show that the lyrics are coming from the cops point of view.
The lyrics are from the cops perspective, telling the person stopped by the police, that - if your having girl trouble I feel bad for you son, you've got 99 problems (as in w the police) but a bitch ain't one.
He also says "A" bitch not "the" bitch. Changes the meaning a lot.
I'll say what's classy, is you writing .., to omit the lyrics that prove its not about a girl but a cop telling The guy that girl problems aren't one of his 99 problems.
Now the fact that pj played one part of one song with jay z bothers me zero. I'm really glad WMA was played. The rest of the show looked great!
Ummm I cut those lyrics because I didn't think the whole quote was necessary. I wasn't intentionally trying to take the lyrics out of context. And explain to me how the line "I feel bad for you son" proves that it's about racial profiling and that it's taken from the perspective of the cops when all the verses are Jay-Z's perspective.
Look you guys can talk all you want about how he's a genius and a great guy but as a teacher who has to fight every day with the mentality that a) being "hard" and a gangster is cool and b) a person's value is measured solely by their wealth, I personally find the hero worship of Jay-Z ridiculous.
And to whoever said "why would you go to a Jay-Z festival if you are so offended by him?" well I didn't go-I have no idea where you got that from.
Finally, I don't quite understand why I get jumped all over just because I stated an opinion. I don't care if Pearl Jam performed with Jay-Z and I don't care that Jay-Z says bitch or whatever. I just don't buy that the HOOK is really about what he claims. More over, it is NOT racial profiling when you are a) speeding and b)admittedly carrying a ton of cocaine in your car. This song proves one thing-Jay-Z was very lucky not to get killed or thrown in jail (and if you know anything about his life, you know he narrowly escaped both these fates).if jah is the ship, we smile at the storm.0 -
This shit was epic! Period!
Jay Z also performed 99 problems with Phish back in 2004 in Brooklyn."I want to go...but I don't want to go alone...With you I could never feel alone..."

LOL. You have to be kidding me.
First of all, if you are so offended by Jay Z, why would you even attend HIS festival?
Secondly - and more importantly - this song is just art. There is no need to take it for anything more than that. You can get on your pedestal and judge a TEENAGED Shawn Carter all you want, (while ignoring, for example, his concerts at MSG, where 100% of the proceeds went to families of firefighters who died on 9/11), but what the hell does that have to do with PJ simply performing a fun, cool song with him? I suppose you'd also be offended if Eddie watched The Godfather and it's glamorization of violence and organized crime.
Give me a break.
For the record, this performance kicked ASS. Dope as hell.
I didn't go to the show, so I don't know where you got that from. It's not just a teenaged Jay-Z, in 1999 (when he was already an adult and well known) he stabbed a guy for allegedly bootlegging his music. Apparently the only reason he didn't get arrested was because the wound turned out to fairly benign.
As far as judging his music-my whole point was that I don't much care for the subject matter at all. And I don't buy his explanation. I also listen to lots of reggae music which has been accused of extreme homophobia. Beenie Man tried to justify his lyrics AFTER the fact by saying the lyrics that referred to homosexuals were actually about pedophiles. I just don't care for this type of revisionism.
And as I said in an earlier response-if you saw the way that music like this totally warps the minds of kids these days (like I do), you might have a thing to say about it too. Artists should take their art seriously and think about what they are putting out there. Hip hop has in many ways lost all of it's soul (as has a lot of music).if jah is the ship, we smile at the storm.0 -
