Chick-fil-A store breaks with founder to sponsor LGBT Pride

    By David Edwards
    Wednesday, August 1, 2012 12:49 EDT

New Hampshire’s only Chick-fil-A restaurant is going against the wishes of chicken chain founder Dan Cathy by pledging to co-sponsor an LGBT Pride Festival in the state.

In a statement on the New Hampshire Pride Festival website, Nashua Chick-fil-A franchise manager Anthony Picolia said he was backing the the event, citing “positive relationships with family, friends, customers and employees in the LGBT community.”

“It would make me sad if someone felt that they were not openly welcomed into my life or restaurant based on their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender,” Picolia explained. “Chick-fil-A at Pheasant Lane Mall has gay employees and serves gay customers with honor, dignity and respect. We also don’t discriminate in giving back to the Nashua community, donating to a wide variety of causes.”

“I would challenge people to come have a conversation with me before they make assumptions or boycott my restaurant. Come to my restaurant and see for yourself that my team and I only have one mission: To serve exceptional experiences to all.”

Market research firm YouGov recently found that Chick-fil-A’s BrandIndex score had fallen 40 percent nationally since Cathy told the Baptist Press that his company was “guilty as charged” of funding groups that oppose marriage equality.

Last week, Fox News host Mike Huckabee said he was so outraged that “militant homosexuals” were attacking the Christian restaurant chain that he called for a “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” on August 1.

Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Wednesday told The Daily Caller that critics of the restaurant chain were guilty of “intolerance and bigotry.”

“This is the kind of intolerance you’re seeing and it’s very unfortunate, but it’s the beginning of something that think I you’re going to see a lot more of as this issue — these issues fundamentally changing the basic moral foundation of our country continues to spread there’s going to be an intolerance for any dissent to that change,” Santorum said.

Proponents of LGBT rights and marriage equality are also staging a “National Same Sex Kiss Day” at Chick-fil-A restaurants across the nation on Friday, August 3.

“Head to your local Chick-fil-A and share a kiss with your sweetie,” organizers advised. “Let’s show Chick-fil-A that EVERYONE deserves to be able to fall in love, start a family, and take their children to eat fried chicken after a soccer match. ;)

This whole chain of events has been a weird phenomenon. The story itself should have been a footnote, unnoticed by 99.5% of everyone. But a LGBT watchdog threw some gas on the story ... and I think they got their eyebrows singed.

It's not often where a large business or public figure offends the LGBT and then refuses to bow and kiss the ring on a national stage.

Now two groups are squaring off because they hate each other. The most ruthless player haters gather together to compete to be the biggest player hater.

I hate you. I hate you. I don't even know you, and I hate your guts. I hope all the bad things in life happen to you and nobody else but you.

So, we shouldn't have a thought in our head about where we choose to spend our money? This might be a boycott to some but I look at it as if I am choosing where to spend my money and I don't want to support a company that has values different than mine. There are very few large retailers or restaurants that I ever frequent because I disagree with some aspect of their company value system. How is this wrong? Shouldn't we hold people (and since corporations are people this should include them as well) to higher standards instead of continuing to accept low standards and low quality? We have thread after thread on MT that talks about economic freedom but when it comes to choosing where I spend my money, people are chastised for being sheep or trying to take away the economic freedom of a business. If I choose to never eat CFA again that is my economic choice and I would think some of you would support that based on your economic opinions in other threads.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

sounds like you are in favor of discrimination.

sounds like you are saying that that uppity lgbt person should just shut the fuck up and take the discrimination then, huh??

perhaps those uppity negroes in selma should have just shut the fuck up too, huh? perhaps rosa parks should have just sat in the back of the bus, right?

if these people do not stand up for their own rights nobody else will. in a civil rights movement people have to reach out and grab those rights, because those in power do not want to bestow upon them the rights that god apparently gave them.

it just takes one moment to spark the movement that enacts social change.

No one has suggested you shouldn't spend your money wherever you want to, based on whatever you feel is the right thing to base it on. Most people in this thread (on one side of the debate at least) are bothered about:
    - First Amendment implications
    - The overall shitstorm that has been kicked up
    - Oh and the liberal (in both senses of the word) use of the incendiary word "haters" to make sure the conversation stays antagonistic

But don't kid yourself that you're making an "economic" decision. You're making a political (or perhaps social) decision that happens to manifest via your wallet.

    whole thing is hilarious.

all 5 Chick-Fil-A's in my city closed down by 6pm last night because they ran out of food. and i couldn't be happier. If the guy had spewed out hate speech then i'd be boycotting Chick-Fil-A but all he did was share an opinion on gay marriage. Do i disagree with him? YES. But all of this protesting against him is even more offensive to me.

I'm all for gay rights but i can't stand when people try to make a big deal out of nothing. I'm buying my waffle fries tonight. And the fries have to be good for me to get involved in a political discussion. The right and the left can both go jump off a cliff.
