Interestingly this year my chair gave me a Chik-fil-A calendar for the holidays (it comes with a monthly coupon) to thank me for being a faculty coordinator. I knew some of their political leanings, but accepted it nonetheless because, well, he was my boss and I wasn't going to throw a fit over a calendar. PLUS my wife happens to love the shitty chicken sandwiches with pickles on top. So I gave it to her. August was actually the best coupon because instead of a free coke or something you got a sandwich, but now, after the whole deal my wife won't use it because she doesn't want to be read as "hating gays". To borrow from the Hangover, making a political statement in this manner is like getting herpes - that shit stays with you.

If Chick Fil A maintains this stance as a professor committed to social justice there is no way in hell I can be caught eating their food FOREVER, because a student may see it and ask what the eff I'm doing, or, worse give me a thumbs up because they mistakenly think that I believe in their religion. Well... I think a lot of the blame would go with the rather massive campaign from people like Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin who turned it into such a "with us or against us" story. I think a lot of the blame goes to the people who lined up for hours to make such a massive story.
While yes... the GLBT community did raise the issue to which Dan Cathy responded with his rather smug "guilty as charged" line, it wouldn't have gotten to be such a run-away train had it not become such a classless moment to grandstand and say that "supporting ChikFilA meansing supporting Traditional Marriage." Which is what the line of the day was.

That's a good point about Coors. I remember when I was in college in the mid-90s, a time when most people are willing to drink turpentine if it gets them drunk, people wouldn't drink Coors because of their politically leanings. We'd drink jello shots that wouldn't solidify because of the alcohol content through a communal straw, but no one wanted to drink Coors.

Absolutely. We have "safe zones" on campus and I can't imagine anyone in those offices ordering Chick-fil-a for a staff meeting. In the past there would sometimes be a passing comment by people on campus who were aware of Cathy's ideology, but now people have kind of been hit in the face of it. Cathy's comments have made it so that a chicken sandwich is no longer a chicken sandwich.
