Chick-fil-A store breaks with founder to sponsor LGBT Pride

New Hampshire’s only Chick-fil-A restaurant is going against the wishes of chicken chain founder Dan Cathy by pledging to co-sponsor an LGBT Pride Festival in the state.
In a statement on the New Hampshire Pride Festival website, Nashua Chick-fil-A franchise manager Anthony Picolia said he was backing the the event, citing “positive relationships with family, friends, customers and employees in the LGBT community.”
“It would make me sad if someone felt that they were not openly welcomed into my life or restaurant based on their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender,” Picolia explained. “Chick-fil-A at Pheasant Lane Mall has gay employees and serves gay customers with honor, dignity and respect. We also don’t discriminate in giving back to the Nashua community, donating to a wide variety of causes.”
“I would challenge people to come have a conversation with me before they make assumptions or boycott my restaurant. Come to my restaurant and see for yourself that my team and I only have one mission: To serve exceptional experiences to all.”
Market research firm YouGov recently found that Chick-fil-A’s BrandIndex score had fallen 40 percent nationally since Cathy told the Baptist Press that his company was “guilty as charged” of funding groups that oppose marriage equality.
Last week, Fox News host Mike Huckabee said he was so outraged that “militant homosexuals” were attacking the Christian restaurant chain that he called for a “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” on August 1.
Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Wednesday told The Daily Caller that critics of the restaurant chain were guilty of “intolerance and bigotry.”
“This is the kind of intolerance you’re seeing and it’s very unfortunate, but it’s the beginning of something that think I you’re going to see a lot more of as this issue — these issues fundamentally changing the basic moral foundation of our country continues to spread there’s going to be an intolerance for any dissent to that change,” Santorum said.
Proponents of LGBT rights and marriage equality are also staging a “National Same Sex Kiss Day” at Chick-fil-A restaurants across the nation on Friday, August 3.
“Head to your local Chick-fil-A and share a kiss with your sweetie,” organizers advised. “Let’s show Chick-fil-A that EVERYONE deserves to be able to fall in love, start a family, and take their children to eat fried chicken after a soccer match. ”
This whole chain of events has been a weird phenomenon. The story itself should have been a footnote, unnoticed by 99.5% of everyone. But a LGBT watchdog threw some gas on the story ... and I think they got their eyebrows singed.
It's not often where a large business or public figure offends the LGBT and then refuses to bow and kiss the ring on a national stage.
Now two groups are squaring off because they hate each other. The most ruthless player haters gather together to compete to be the biggest player hater.
I hate you. I hate you. I don't even know you, and I hate your guts. I hope all the bad things in life happen to you and nobody else but you.

yep and it only took one LGBT to start a senseless fire storm of crap tossing.
and what will become of all this crap ?...nothing, just hurt feelings. :?
So, we shouldn't have a thought in our head about where we choose to spend our money? This might be a boycott to some but I look at it as if I am choosing where to spend my money and I don't want to support a company that has values different than mine. There are very few large retailers or restaurants that I ever frequent because I disagree with some aspect of their company value system. How is this wrong? Shouldn't we hold people (and since corporations are people this should include them as well) to higher standards instead of continuing to accept low standards and low quality? We have thread after thread on MT that talks about economic freedom but when it comes to choosing where I spend my money, people are chastised for being sheep or trying to take away the economic freedom of a business. If I choose to never eat CFA again that is my economic choice and I would think some of you would support that based on your economic opinions in other threads.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?
Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

sounds like you are in favor of discrimination.
sounds like you are saying that that uppity lgbt person should just shut the fuck up and take the discrimination then, huh??
perhaps those uppity negroes in selma should have just shut the fuck up too, huh? perhaps rosa parks should have just sat in the back of the bus, right?
if these people do not stand up for their own rights nobody else will. in a civil rights movement people have to reach out and grab those rights, because those in power do not want to bestow upon them the rights that god apparently gave them.
it just takes one moment to spark the movement that enacts social change.

No one has suggested you shouldn't spend your money wherever you want to, based on whatever you feel is the right thing to base it on. Most people in this thread (on one side of the debate at least) are bothered about:
- First Amendment implications
- The overall shitstorm that has been kicked up
- Oh and the liberal (in both senses of the word) use of the incendiary word "haters" to make sure the conversation stays antagonistic
But don't kid yourself that you're making an "economic" decision. You're making a political (or perhaps social) decision that happens to manifest via your wallet.
all 5 Chick-Fil-A's in my city closed down by 6pm last night because they ran out of food. and i couldn't be happier. If the guy had spewed out hate speech then i'd be boycotting Chick-Fil-A but all he did was share an opinion on gay marriage. Do i disagree with him? YES. But all of this protesting against him is even more offensive to me.
I'm all for gay rights but i can't stand when people try to make a big deal out of nothing. I'm buying my waffle fries tonight. And the fries have to be good for me to get involved in a political discussion. The right and the left can both go jump off a cliff.

whats funny is that of all of the fast food places in America, Chick-Fil-A is by far the friendliest and most respectful in regards to customer service.
If people are just "so upset" with them having a nativity scene on the counter during Christmas or someone answering a gay marriage question then just don't go there. But don't try to harm their business just because their views differ from yours. That's why i'm so glad Chick-Fil-A is cashing in from this nonsense.
The Chick-Fil-A out by me in Iowa was slammed yesterday. I didn't track specifically how long, but someone I know was in line. And my family got Panera and finished from the time she was in the back of the line to the time she was about 10 people away from the registers.
For me it's not that their company holds a religious view it's that they take people's money to perform the tyranny of religion by donating it to lobbyists and special interest groups designed to take rights and freedoms away from others. Dude is free to believe what he wants but he's using his power to deny others their rights and that's fucked up, and very Un-American.

uhhh ... if the owner doesn't believe in same sex marriage - maybe he should just not go to one or have any gay married friends ... why does he want to go and harm other people's ability to get married? ... he is prepared to spend money to prevent other people from marrying ... so, that's ok?

yes i am dead serious.
it is ok with you that a company gives money to organizations that work against gay marriage? i don't care if they believe in god or whatever, but the minute they are actively working to keep a group of people from enjoing the same rights that you and i have, that is discriminatory. with attitudes like the one you are conveying there would still be no african americans voting in the south.
if you think it is ok to deprive rights to an entire population because you think their right to marry is "yucky" then it is you who has the problem.
you and i have a decent rapport, but if i were gay i would be outraged at how easily you dismiss my rights and my desire to have the same rights you have.

No, it's not. But this isn't a black and white world and individually we sometimes compromise our beliefs. Kinda like voting for that guy that believes its ok to kill babies. I did that last time.
Again, the major problem I have with all of this is instead of having an open dialogue about this stuff we always resort to overwhelming support (i.e. Aug 1st) or complete and utter opposition (boycott, etc.)
I say a few people I know in that Chick-fil-a line and they are all very good people, some of the best I know. It's the religion and history that has made them so against Gay Marriage. If we can openly talk about it, I think it starts to whittle away. Hell, when I was in High School I remember not really understanding it and wondering how it could be natural if it couldn't sustain itself (ie can't have kids).
