Eesh. I'm usually kind of a PJ sell-out apologist, but the Target National Sales Conference? Ugh... :shock:0

It was for the employees.. lucky them (the employees) if you ask me. Nothing like taking a long piss break during the other performers and coming out to see Pearl Jam rock out with three songs.Austin City Limits - Oct 04, 20090

That allowed them to play music for a living and get their music out to people. If they had to compromise their values for that, then that would be selling out, but it's 2010 and they've been at this for 20 years. Sure they can play whatever they want but it's just disheartening that this is the kind of gig they decide to do.
they have to do this gig dude. dont you think they did this for sony over the the years. its called kissing ass sometimes if you wanna remain in good standing with a big company you have to do it. target WAS THE ONLY company that would allow pj to sell backspacer on this very site and at indie stores. you people would probably bitch had backspace not been sold on here or in the indie stores. its like pj cant win with you people.
Signing with SubPop would've never given them the security they found with Sony. I can't fault them for that. They were lucky to get such a deal in the first place considering they hadn't been together that long as a band. And again, Target made profit from selling Backspacer. It's not like they bent over backwards for Pearl Jam and lost money on the deal. Don't tell me that a millionaire band has to kiss ass and do that gig. And don't tell me they didn't get a pocketfull of money to do it.My Pearl Jam Photos

Although they really sold long before today, They are just shoving it in people's faces now.
A few of us are trying to put our finger on when they jumped the shark.
Some say 2006, When they brought out the lasers during the shows and Ed was drinking water out of his wine bottle at every show.
I think it was even earlier... When Jack was booted.
So after going to 100 plus shows starting at Cameo 1992, I bid PJ adu.

Pearl Jam are sellouts! They will not restore credibility until they start playing prisons and half way houses.0

Is this a joke? I honestly can't tell whether it's meant to be serious or not. :?&&&&&&&&&&&&&&0

And I thought today was just going to be all about people pissing and moaning about ticket sales...
Seriously, who actually gives a fuck about this? Did anybody die? Is the world about to end? No, I didn't think so. What difference does it actually make to our lives?

this isnt aimed at PJ exactly, but ive always thought that if i had a million dollars, my main priority wouldnt be to make a million more. yet everyone you see that makes a million seems to. i find this fascinating. in fact, i'd go out of my way to tell everyone who wanted me to do something to kiss my ass! i cant wait to find out what i really do after i make my first mil!0

This is a pointless debate. I agree with the dude who said that terms like "sell out" lose a lot of meaning as you age. Ten years ago, before I had a family, sure, I would have been "keeping it real." But with family comes a whole new realm. Now I worry about providing for my kids. And say what you want, but if you had the opportunity to go out and be able to play music for a living and give your kids and family enough money to where they are set for life, you are going to do that. Any musician who does it only for the love of music and all that bullshit are the ones who end up finding a real job by the time they are 30 and struggling to make ends meet because they've dedicated their lives to something that has given no returns. To quote The Chapelle Show, that's "When Keeping it Real Goes Wrong!" And I'm sure I'll catch a lot of shit for the fact that I place some value on money and financial freedom, but grow up...like it or not, it takes money to live in this world.
And by the way, this in no way meant to offend anyone. Don't take anything personal. Just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions... It's just that "street cred" means nothing to me or the majority of the general public in today's world. It's a different world than it was 20 years ago.Post edited by nicksmith33 on0 -

If you drank wine out of Ed's bottle on the 2006 tour you were on some serious drugs. Nothing but water in there all of 2006. Kinda gay to go that far to keep up the schtick.0 -

So exactly what prevents them from doing what Radiohead did with "In Rainbows"? That's the model PJ should follow and that's a band that has managed to keep their dignity fully intact. I doubt any of their children are goin hungry either. My Pearl Jam Photos

Not one to normally post, but to the OP....question for you..
Do you not think that while under the Sony label (Epic), they had professional obligations or responsibilities to fulfill? I'm willing to bet that they had to do stuff like this as well. It's business guys.....I don't get the problem. This was one, small requirement in their contract...3 songs and they're considered "sellouts".
Not trying to pick a fight, but...it's not the 90's anymore, kids. These guys are a band and def. about the music, but they also have to act like a small business. I mean...consider them being offered a huge deal by label "x" where the had to do ipod commercials, endorse Coke or Pepsi, and started a fashion line...
Sell outs? Occasionally I'm embarrased by some of the statements I read on this board.
Name me another artist, 20 years young that has acted with the ethical and generous spirit that PJ has over the years...
You know...the f'd up thing is that these guys probably could've taken in 3 times the amount they have by now. Go back and read up on your history from 95-98.0 -

People like you obsessed with selling out need to get off your ass and get a job no one will call you a sell out just get a job. It's the poor and unaccomplished who talk about selling out. Walk upstairs and tell your mom and dad I said hello.Post edited by corduroykelly on0
