The PJ sell-out debate ends here

"Today 3/16/2010 – in what might be the craziest lineup the band has ever been a part of, with Shaun White, Michael Buble’, Nick Jonas, Lady Antebellum, and Norah Jones – Pearl Jam played a three-song set at (where else) the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota at Target’s National Sales Conference. Pearl Jam was last on the bill and played The Fixer, The Real Me (The Who) and Porch." (source two feet thick)

Look at the lineup along with the band. Unreal.

This is arguable at best. First of all, PJ didn't choose who to play with at this event. Second of all, they had to play it because they felt they had to make a small deal with Target in order to free themselves from a major label. I wouldn't call it a sell-out just yet.
  • Stop bitching about them selling out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. If u dont like it go listen to that band down at the local bar who is never gonna make it and give them ur money. They are a band. This is their job as well as their passion. God Dammit Mother Fucker. So tired of everyone calling them sell outs. I guess they should just pay for all of it themselves and go broke so they cant support themselves and their families. :D

And Target made a profit from selling the album. Pearl Jam is not comprised of chattels.

today 3/16 Pearl Jam died. it's a dark day

they'd been on life support a while though.
  • Not saying I still dont love them, just saying the debate is over and has been over for a bit. Relax. and Im over 22

Aren't we being too harsh? I'm sure they had their reasons for playing and regardless, they've earned the right to do whatever the hell they want. As long as they keep coming by MSG now and then and offer bootlegs for sale, I'm happy!
  • they sold out a long time ago. i dont care.

i just hate when the sheeple who have rooms dedicated to their Eddie shrine get all uptight about it and try to come up with very creative reasons why they havent.

    sell outs
  • It's truly a sad day in the history of PJ.
Although they really sold long before today, They are just shoving it in people's faces now.
A few of us are trying to put our finger on when they jumped the shark.
Some say 2006, When they brought out the lasers during the shows and Ed was drinking water out of his wine bottle at every show.
I think it was even earlier... When Jack was booted.
So after going to 100 plus shows starting at Cameo 1992, I bid PJ adu.

I still love the shit out of them but I got killed for saying this when they sold unthought known as a narrative device for a network tv show.
Anyways we live in a world where nothings sacred, so let's just go with it and have a good time.

That allowed them to play music for a living and get their music out to people. If they had to compromise their values for that, then that would be selling out, but it's 2010 and they've been at this for 20 years. Sure they can play whatever they want but it's just disheartening that this is the kind of gig they decide to do.

they coulda easily signed with sub pop 20 years ago but they went with that sony deal cause it gave them the most money and made them set for for life. again whats the difference weather it be sony. j records or target. they always were sell out and always will be sell outs. every band sells out. how many fucking ramones tshirts do you see or look at how much money fat mike from nofox is cashing in on from his record label.

they have to do this gig dude. dont you think they did this for sony over the the years. its called kissing ass sometimes if you wanna remain in good standing with a big company you have to do it. target WAS THE ONLY company that would allow pj to sell backspacer on this very site and at indie stores. you people would probably bitch had backspace not been sold on here or in the indie stores. its like pj cant win with you people.

Eesh. I'm usually kind of a PJ sell-out apologist, but the Target National Sales Conference? Ugh...

Signing with SubPop would've never given them the security they found with Sony. I can't fault them for that. They were lucky to get such a deal in the first place considering they hadn't been together that long as a band. And again, Target made profit from selling Backspacer. It's not like they bent over backwards for Pearl Jam and lost money on the deal. Don't tell me that a millionaire band has to kiss ass and do that gig. And don't tell me they didn't get a pocketfull of money to do it.

And I thought today was just going to be all about people pissing and moaning about ticket sales...

Seriously, who actually gives a fuck about this? Did anybody die? Is the world about to end? No, I didn't think so. What difference does it actually make to our lives?

    Get over it.

actually a millionaire band does have to kiss ass and do gig if they want to do business with target again. its called not loosing a contact in the music world. lets not forget that pj is its own record label now. they don't have someone to back them up. it's strictly 10 club, pearl jam and curtis mangement now.
