Better than Riot Act, not as good as Binaural IMO.

Its my favorite album. about half of the reason is just because it came out right when I was really getting into PJ.

I think Life Wasted and WWS are two of the best songs they ever made. Marker, Severed Hand, Comatose, Parachutes, Unemployable and Army Reserve are also great. Gone, Come Back and Inside job are great, but not as great. I guess I'm more into the heavier stuff.

  • i think it's just so uneven. the production is abysmal and it's hard to listen to sometimes because it's so bad. that said, there are some excellent songs on it: life wasted/reprise, severed hand, unemployable, parachutes, marker in the sand, come back, army reserve. i love all of those songs. gone, WWS and comatose are ok, but very skippable. inside job has it's moments, but is a bit overwrought to me... it reminds me of a late 80s aerosmith song. and i agree with many of you who say that big wave should never have been on a record. overall i felt like it was a huge step down from binaural and riot act. probably somewhere near the bottom of the list as far as ranking the albums goes.
  • i Love Avocados. They're healthy too!

I still think it was their best albulm since Yield.

Ditto. I've written about my love for Self Titled many times.

Such a 180 from Riot Act thank God.

I agree about the produciton thing though. More of the 'loudness' problem that has plagued recordings over the past few years. I can take Vs. or YIELD out to the car or wherever and crank it up all the way and still hear every note clearly. Try that on CDs now and it becomes a big wall of mush. Death Magnetic was the worst offender by far, but Avocado suffers from it too.

Also, every PJ record has at least one clunker for me and this one is no different. Looking at you Parachutes.

  • Its a great record. It was a total 360 from Riot Act. Its a nice Up tempo record with some great rock tracks, life wasted, WWS, comatose, severed hand. I think marker in the sand and inside job might be the two best songs on the record. I can listed to the whole record from start to finish and NOT get bored. They sound great Live and still sound great today...3 years later. Out of 4 stars, I would give this record 3 years later...3 1/2 stars. But then again some of the bitches on this board will dissect every F'in thing in a pearl jam song and have a complaint because they are all musical experts and get upset when they dont get the meaning of life from every PJ song. Just enjoy the music.
  • The highly overcompressed mashed sound comletely ruins the incredible songs that they wrote for this album. This album could've rocked so much harder.

I absolutely LOVE Unemployable (if he can't sleep, how will he ever dream?). For me, it's one of the most "visualizable" songs they've ever written.

I like the whole album, with only one exception......Parachutes is absolute dreck! :(

spot on..i tried hard to love it..its just alright
unemployable grew on me..."scared alive" yea!
    the rest are killer

I agree, with YIELD just edging it out, but Pearl Jam is an amazing album.

As much as I LOVE this album I hope it gets remastered/remixed and re-issued in 2011 :)
  • SELF TITLED(I hate how people call it avocado) was an awesome record!!

I think the main reason a lot of fans didn't like it is because it was mad political and a lot of people like to keep their heads buried in the sand when it comes to that shit so they weren't "feeling it"...I for one, being a very political minded patriot...loved MOST of the album and the fact that the boys weren't content to just ignore what is going on in the world and churn out some bullshit record just solidified my love of this band even more(now if i could just wake Ed up to this Obama clown we'd be totally on the same wavelength  ...oh well...I love him anyway)
  • I LOVE the Avocado album. In fact I am listening to it right now as I type...The only song I don't like on this album is Parachutes...it is terrible.

My favorites are: Life Wasted, World Wide Suicide, Severed Hand, Comatose and Gone! :)

  • It's my least favorite of the PJ albums. Having said that I still like it, 5 or 6 good songs the rest are just ok.

I think Pearl Jam was a breath of fresh air to be honest. (Sorry guys, hate when people refer to it as Avocado)
Riot Act I think is a good album but a lot of the songs took a while to grow on me and Binaural I think is a brilliantly crafted album, no doubt. But, Pearl Jam just came out kicking and screaming, back to really kick ass rock riffs (eg. Severed Hand, Life Wasted...). It also has it's share of little gems such as Inside Job (which I think is one of their most beautiful songs to date) and Marker In The Sand which is just brilliant. The only song I cannot stand is Parachutes, lets face it, it's crud.

To sum up, another fantastic album from the greatest band in the world!
    There's my 2 cents.
    In Pearl Jam we trust!

    I love the album.
I didn't really like Riot Act that much so I was quite happy.
Marker, Army Reserve and Come Back were all favorites.
I'm going to listen on the way home from work now.

I disagree.. Riot Act is a lot more political, and I love it..
This Avocado album (sorry, but I like to call it so :D ) has great lyrics (all PJ albums have great lyrics and meanings).. I just want to clarify that I'm talking merely about the music itself.. and most of the music of this album is terribly generic..
    This is my opinion..

poorly produced, average album at best. First 6 songs are good, but then it gets lame...

I really like it. "Come Back" has become one of my favorite PJ songs, I dont care what everyone around here says about it. The live version from DC 08 is beautiful. "Inside Job" is a masterpiece. There isn't one song on the album that I dislike.
  • middle of the road for me in relation to he other PJ albums.

I agree with this. And maybe I'm crazy, but the last record didn't feel that political to me. Sure it had some some themes running through it but in reality; WWS, Marker and Army Reserve are the only political songs. 3 songs, and we call this a political album? If so that's pretty weak, which could be said for the album as a whole.
Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...

Better than Riot Act for sure.

After Binaural and Riot Act Avocado seems to be what it's called - You won't feel any hunger after eating. And no heartburn:)

I like this it. i feel like Pearl Jam got back to life in this album. For me.

  • Not a big fan. It's my least favourite PJ album (maybe tied with Riot Act).
I like Life Wasted, Severed Hand, WWS, Army Reserve and Comatose, but I don't enjoy the rest.
  • I like the first five songs. Don't care for the rest.

At first I was very impressed with Avocado.

Now, almost 3 years later, it has grown a little tired in my opinion. There are 2 songs that I loved from day 1 that I still love and don't think I will ever get sick of: Life Wasted and Parachutes. I also think that Come Back and Marker are Very good songs that I will always like hearing. One song that I didn't like at first but is now one of my favs is Army Reserve. And Inside Job is AWESOME live but I find it very bland on the album.

Most of the others, I have grown almost completely sick of in 3 years: Severed Hand, Comatose, WWS, Gone, and Unemoployable all fit in to this category, although I would be happy to hear any of them live (well, maybe not Gone) as long as it wasn't at every show. Big Wave never really turned me on, but hearing it live in Harford brought it to life, which was really cool.

All in all, I'd say that this is a good album, but not a great album. Certainly not worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Yield, No Code, vs, Vitalogy and Ten. But it is still a solid album with some very good songs on it that I am happy is part of the Pearl Jam catalogue.
