Take Big Wave, Army Reserve & Come Back off this record and you've got a great one! I would definately love to hear some of the songs left off this record that would have likely made it a great record. (Of The Earth, Cold Confession, 2x4) I really believe that Ed sometimes sabatoges albums. He is the one that decides the final tracklisting. Xzibit A. Binaural-Seriously how can you leave Sad & Fatal off this record and put Evacuation on it????????????????? Xzibit B. Riot Act-Help,Help & Get Right and he shelves Down & Otherside?????? Don't tell me these songs don't fit with the others Ed!

i agree with all your points except about avocado!

I really like the album - not in my top 2 but in the bundle beneath. However there is one song I skip at every listen. Big Wave is awful, mabye their worst song ever, and that song makes the total picture blur a bit - for me at least.

I was just listening to the album while reading this thread - and now I am looking so much forward to the new album.
Run away my son. See it all. Oh see the world.
  • I have got to be honest i dont really like saying negative things about my fave band, but Avocado is just an ok album, not up there with the rest of the back catalogue.
    It sounds rushed,forced even-imo
I played it quite a lot just before the gigs, but i just dont bother with it now.
My least fave pj record, but i,m sure the next one will be great 8-)
  • i've said many things about avocado, both positive and negative.

now, i will just say this:

the fact that there has been and is so much debate as to whether this is a good album and the fact that opinions of it are extremely divided/mixed says a lot...and not in a good way.

    i never listen to it.

This album does next to nothing for me...

I think that some of the songs on the album are some of the most boring songs in the catalog. Parachutes and Big Wave are right up there with Evacuation for me. Someone mentioned that they don't stand the test of time and I agree. They seem tired and slow to me.

I don't need a bunch of 40+ men trying to make a killer rock album.....So the "return to the rock" thing is not good to me. Some of the best PJ songs are slow and build (see Lowlight, Of a girl, Immortality)

Honestly, the only studio album I listen to is Vitalogy. To me it's the only album that really shows the punk influences of the band the most.

AMEN to this! (except I regularly listen the first 7 albums)
More introspective and experimental songs, please, we don't need other 2-3 minutes punkish songs that Eddie seems to like so much nowadays.. PJ already written the best punk song they could write (spin, spin..)
Alrigh, enough bitching, I'm sure the next album will be great

The day I realized how much I liked this album is the day I was coming home from camping in the middle of nowhere. Stereo cranked, windows down, no one around for miles, not a care in the world (except if my truck would make it home).

I'm so partial to this band, it's hard to say.
I do like it. I'm just glad we get a little of everything on every record. Everyone has their favorite records. They're creative enough not to keep repeating themselves.

It is better than the previous two but not as good as the first six!

  • 1. there are some decent to good songs on it.

    2. overall, it is their weakest album and i stress the word album.

    3. if you look at the evolution of the band studio-wise, they evolved further with each and every record until avocado, which was a step backward. in other words, they regressed.

Avocado is good, it's def not my favorite but probably not my least favorite either...

... I think the stand out tracks are Severed Hand, Marker in the Sand, & Inside Job... I really do like Parachutes & Come Back even though many people don't...

I really think they played it safe with that album, however.

I for one, love this album. The only song that bores me at times is 'Gone'.

It's a great, solid album start to finish.
Probably 2 songs on there that I can skip but the rest are amazing.

Still think it's the band's worst effort by a long shot.

Looking forward to the next one, hope it's a big improvement.

One thing that I really dislike with Avocado and also how the songs are played live is Eddies vocals.

The choruses and stuff are, in lack of better knowledge of the english laungauge, growled andmuffled. It takes away energy from the lyrics and the songs, it sounds so constrained.

I dig when he "screams" like in Tremor Christ and other songs but here instead of forcing the words out it's like his holding them in. Hopefully someone will understand what I mean.

This is evident in WWS and Life Wasted for example, but pretty much anything that is suppose to be rock on the album. Therefore I think Come Back, Parachutes and Gone holds up better then the faster songs.

And he sings this way live to. So the songs sounds kind of boring and not to their full potentional (Accoruding to my subjective taste :) ) on the live boots.

Anyone know what I mean? Eddie need to sing again, not scream in that constrained way.

The packaging of it was just the worst thing. Sony/J Records or whoever designed the width of the gatefold did a huge mistake. It was such a thin gatefold with the thick booklet inside all in the tight plastic wrapped around, so my records was really bent and warpy. Compare the thickness to the DITP vinyl gatefold package and you'll see the difference!

Please don't make the same mistake with the package of the new albums vinyl edition!

Worst record in their catalogue by far. Unemployable and Parachutes are gems, Life Wasted and Severed Hand are pretty great - the rest is irredeemable dreck.

Horrendous artwork too. I'm shocked that someone didn't say "uh...you SURE you want an avocado on it?!" before it went to press. It's a huge disappointment from a band that has always placed such importance on beautiful packaging.

I still think it was their best albulm since Yield.

    QFT.

Album is great! One of their best.
I Know All The Rules But The Rules Do Not Know Me.
  • Their weakest album by a landslide. Everyone hated Riot Act, and loved Avocado, which I don't understand.

I've been a member of the fan club/message board for a long-ass time. A trend that I have seen around here is to shit on the most recent album and declare the previous far superior. When Binaural came out people were crapping all over it---everyone was longing for Yield. Then Riot Act came out, people were deciding what to make of it, then after some time passed Riot Act became the trendy album to shit on---Binaural was now a "masterpiece". Now people shit on Avocado and declare Riot Act superior. Does anyone else see this the way I'm describing. I think what we have is the old cliche---"the grass is always greener on the other side". Bottom line: they're all good; they're all different.

PS---when I use a word such as everyone, of course there is a degree of exageration. So if you feel your blood pressure going up while reading my post, just relax---everything will be ok.
  • I never realized how many fans were record producers. Maybe some of you can produce the next record so it will actually sound good. Can't wait for that.

What I really like about posts like these, debates on songs or albums, it the amazing difference in opinion when it comes to likes and dislikes. That alone shows me that this is a healthy band. I see s/t as a step in the right direction when it comes to an album. The previous two, while I love many of the songs live, didn't do it for me as a single work.
