I was actually listening to this cd in my car today and realized it is definitely one of my Favorites! Every time I hear the guitar solo for "Severed Hand" I get the inspiration to play my guitar, SUCH A JAMMIN SONG!!0

I feel ya, I had the Privlidge to see Severed Hand in New Orleans, and it was life changing. But WWS would have been so great to see!red mos said:I love pj self titled AKA "avocado," I think it's a fantastic album and very underrated. Sadly, only heard WWS from it live.

One of my least favorite from the catalog, I still pop it in once in a while though.
It is Pearl Jam, so there are some amazing songs on Avocado: Comatose, Comeback, Inside Job.
The problem for me is that it has some songs I'll never like on it: Marker in the Sand, Gone, Parachutes...I never listen to it front to back because of those tracks.
I just didn't care for this whole era with the band...they made a great "comeback" with Backspacer and Lightning Bolt though!

Agreed! Brendan and Pearl Jam are perfect together, all their best records are with him. Vs through Yield and the last two. When I heard he was coming back for Backspacer, I knew it would be back to true form for the boys and it has been since. I LOVE Backspacer and Lightning Bolt!RD101189 said:I thought it was better than Binaural or Riot Act when it came out. I tend to like Binaural a little better these days. Definitely think they improved on Backspacer and have their best album since Yield with Lightning Bolt. Brendan O'Brien producing seem to make a difference.

Interesting. I think that Brendan is responsible for Backspacer being one of the worse albums of 2009 and for what is most wrong with LB.... He used to do good things for PJ, but not anymore. They badly need a new producer for the next album IMO.With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0

Strongly disagree, but to each his or her own. All the albums that Brendan didn't produce are on the bottom half of the list for me...Avocado, Riot Act, and especially Ten.PJ_Soul said:Interesting. Yes, of course it's a matter of opinion. Riot Act and Selt-titled are in my top 5 (Ten isn't, but that doesn't mean it's not a great album too). While Backspacer is a steaming pile of musical crap for me, and his influence on LB made it not as good an album as it could have been IMO.jp307677 said:

I like Avocado, but lightnig Bolt surpassed it in the last few months as my 8th favorite PJ album. But I thnk I will go find a good version of Army Reserve on youtube.Pick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)0

What do I think of the PJ's Avocado cd?
It has a lot of good songs on it and so for me, it has held up.
In fact, I love some of the songs on that cd!&&&&&&&&&&&&&&0 -
I think it's interesting that there is such a debate on the albums from the second half of their career (Binaural to LB). There seems to be much less debate on the first five records.
I'd rank the post-2000 albums:
1) Backspacer
2) Lightning Bolt
3) Avocado
4) Binaural
5) Riot Act
And I think Brendan O'Brien is the key to their sound on record. I know a lot of people on this board would disagree with me and probably reverse my ranking completely. I especially don't understand all the dislike for Backspacer. I thought that was a great record. Maybe lacked a little depth at times, but really accessible and flowed start to finish."Darkness comes in waves, tell me, why invite it to stay?"0 -
Riot Act doesn't get enough love. What a fucking fantastic record. Easily better than the 4 you listed above it.www.cluthelee.com0

Yeah, I completely love it! One of their best IMO! I think every single song on that album is great! And I think it had a great flow/progression as well.2-feign-reluctance said:Riot Act doesn't get enough love. What a fucking fantastic record. Easily better than the 4 you listed above it.

I really liked Riot Act when it was released, but it hasn't held up for me. Help Help is probably their worst song in my opinion and Get Right, Half Full, Green Disease are likely the least memorable from their entire catalog.
There are some gems on it though: Can't Keep, You Are, All or None, Save You.
It also has a great booklet with many good pics of the band in the studio.
Just for the record, this is comparing to other Pearl Jam records...although it's one of my least favorites from them, it's so much better than anyone else could do.0
