Nick Swisher to the Yankees, for jeff Marquez. Don't love him, but he'll add flexibilty. Can play 1st and CF

another 1st and CF? ugh. add him to the list of 4 CF and 3 1B.

we need pitching, pitching, pitching, and pitching.
  • i don't have a problem with the move. assuming he's the understudy to a bigger named first baseman, he's a better option than wilson betemit and plus he can play the outfield.

exactly. i hope they're not ticketing him for 1st or CF. He's a pretty good bat off the bench (power wise, not average) or backup. It's amazing how far this guy has fallen. he was an up and coming star just a few years back. He hit .253 with 35 HR's and 95 RBI's a few years back.

I think he's a swing guy, though I wouldn't necessarily object to him playing center field every day considering what I've seen from Melky Cabrera so far.

I'm really hoping gardner is the everyday CF. If melky's with the team in 2009, it's only to play late inning leftfield, to take over for Damon or Matsui. I think Gardner will be great. Hit in the .280's, walk a lot, and steal 50+ bases. Play the best centerfield we've seen in a long, long time. He'll bat 9th all year, and take over the leadoff spot in 2010. I wonder if the Swisher move is a precursor to a Damon or Matsui trade?

I'd say more likely for Damon to be traded than Matsui. Only on the basis that Damon can be an outfielder and designated hitter where Matsui's knee surgeries limit him to being a designated hitter.

As for Gardner, I like his ability to work counts. But he has to hit, which if he does at a .260-270 clip you'd take with the anticipation that he's going to get better. Considering his defense, you might even settle for .245-255 range average-wise.

  • agree on gardner. I really like that dude. he seems like a guy that couldve been on the late 90's team plus he is fast as hell. I'd like to see him be the man in CF. Melky has always been a 4th outfielder to me.

again heard this morning yanks expected to send CC something nice today

If you believe the comments that are coming out of the Yanks, then Swisher could be the regular 1B and is not likely to play CF unless they need some flexibility. You get the impression that he is more likely to play the corner OF spots than CF. He seems to me like a younger more versatile version of Giambi. Low BA, lots of BBs, power hitter. His RBI total was pretty low this past season, but that is mostly due to the fact that they had him hitting leadoff. He's also good friends with C.C. who is clearly the Yanks #1 priority.

BTW.....it sounds like the offer being made to Sabathia is somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 years at around $21 - $24 million per year.

I've never understood that, I guess the economy isn't that bad when it comes to contracts these days.. Of course the Yankees are helped by the fact that when they sneeze they make money and all various tax breaks over the years.

when are the yanks gonna realize their high priced strategy has failed for almost a decade. Everyone knows the definition of insanity.

    I agree somewhat

The names I ran off are those of pretty young pitchers. The past they overspent on "OLD" Randy johnson,Clemens,Kevin Brown

and what seems like 1 year wonders like Vasquez,Wright,Pavano. And I probably left out a few. Their starting pitching staff needs to be solidified.I think free agency is the way this year, they need to hold onto their prospects.

Its hard to do it like the Rays did it.They sucked soo long, they had what seems like the #1 pick for 10 years. And also I think as a fanbase we are spoiled.Seems every year they need to make a big splash.Yankees are always tryin to dominate the back pages

I couldn't believe it when I read that, that the Yankees would do that to him. But later I read it was Rasner's idea. Guess he figures he can dominate over there, instead of sucking here. What if he didn't want to go, though? Can a team just move a guy to Japan without his okay?
