McCain seeks to delay debate to focus on economy

If Obama agrees, does that make the first debate the VP debate next week?
Or would each of them be pushed back to keep them in order?- Busted down the pretext

I understand and agree... I know the pandering and everything that has to be done to be elected these days, but McCain (to his credit) just looks so uncomfortable doing it, you gotta wonder why he would even want to at this point. My whole life

so, I guess Obama initially contacted McCain about putting out a joint statement?
We'll see .... I'll be disappointed if Obama agrees to postponing the debate.
The only thing that would make this seem ok is if the actual vote was on Friday and they were forced to be in Washington for the day, seeing as the debate was supposed to be in Mississippi."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

Good political move. I don't think anyone in their right mind could think that it's more than that, but it's a good political move. It puts Obama in a bit of a tough spot, but I do wonder if this will continue to feed into that narrative that McCain's been all over the place in regards to this economic trouble.
We'll see though.0 -

I highly doubt Obama would make such an irresponsible decision. No matter how much these guys care about the economy, suspending the debates are NOT going to effect it. And I hope Obama does not agree to this. I will call him out if he does.0 -

from cnn.com:
The Obama campaign said Obama called McCain at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to ask if the Republican nominee would join him in a joint statement of "shared principles and conditions" for the proposal. It said McCain called back at 2:30 p.m. -- shortly before his New York announcement -- to agree, and "The two campaigns are currently working together on the details."
if obama agrees, that would make two of us that will be disappointed.0 -

I would think that fixing the financial crisis in this country is more important than a FUCKING election. But guess I might just be in the minority..... I'd be surprised and actually a bit energized and hopeful at seeing the two candidates work together and agree to a suitable solution to this mess. This is your notice that there is a problem with your signature. I think fixing a financial crisis and picking our next leader are, if not equal in importance, pretty close.
And if Obama was smart he would come out and say something along these lines..."I am committed to helping in any way possible to work with my fellow congressmen in Washington to ensure the financial stability of our country, and I remain committed to working with Senator McCain in that regard. However, the election is 40 days away, and Senator McCain and I owe it to the American people to have a public, informed debate about how policies and principles." Something like that to put the ball back in McCain's court.0 -
Fucking politics.
(And yes, I would feel the same way if this was coming from Obama.)
btw, didn't McCain just acknowledge yesterday that he hadn't even read the 3-page proposal yet? Maybe he had this epiphany while meeting with Bono today.0 -

Explain to me how this could possible solve the Financial Crisis?
Don't ever kid yourself. John McCain does not give 2 holy fucks about the economic crisis in America. He's playing political chess and this little Hoover Manuever is just a way to bait Obama.

because the economy is going to be solved this very friday night between 9:00 and 10:30pm est?
and glad to see g.w. is coming out of his fucking hole to talk to the american public tonight. he's been in charge these last 8 years right?
and like digster said, i think picking our next president is pretty damn important.0 -

from cnn.com:
"McCain senior advisor Mark Salter told reporters Wednesday that the Arizona senator’s decision followed two days of discussions with colleagues on Capitol Hill, who told him that the bailout plan from Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson faced an uphill fight.
He also said that McCain called President Bush today and told him of the plan, but would not characterize the president’s reaction to the proposal.
The McCain campaign will suspend airing all ads and all campaign events pending an agreement with Obama, though Salter did not know whether John McCain will suspend fundraising activities.
He added that McCain would take part in the debate as scheduled if Congress reached agreement on the measure by Friday morning."
i know the aide was stated as not knowing, but sure, let's stop spending money on ads, but let's keep collecting fundraising money.0 -
