hopefully the reason for these immunizations is being fully explained to these children. mass innoculations shouldn't replace an honest, age appropriate discussion in sex education.

HPV is reaching epidemic levels. these kids need to be taught about all the dangers of being sexually active.

i truly hope this program is successful.

prevention and education are key.

^ for vaccines, and posts, excess can be a bad thing.
But no one can look back a the history of medecine and claim "Vaccines are bad". I'm kinda glad I don't have to fear having rabbies, cholera or smallpox (for example).
You can't expect parents to be experts on all subjects. For medical stuff they sometimes have to trust other sources. I think it's good they are made aware they CAN have this. And while I feel excess vaccination can be extremely hazardous, so can cancer.

Vaccines used to be preserved with a mercury compound called thimerosal.
The ingredient has been removed from all U.S. childhood vaccines, however, I'm not 100% sure about the flu vaccine.

Hello there, my brainwashed friends

I, too, am glad that I didn't have to worry about my kids being crippled by polio, or their hearts weakened by rubella, and I'm happy that we'll now be reducing the incidence of cancer. Over 3,500 women die of cervical cancer every year, and it's almost entirely preventable. I'm glad they're going to start preventing it in Texas, and I hope that every state in the union follows suit.

im sorry... given your links it was the homeopathic society's listserve that provided you with all your medical information. my mistake. i love it when high school flunk outs try to rationalize the fact that they couldn't pass basic math by saying that college is nothing but "indoctrination." it's especially funny becos 'the man' they try so hard to fight is so convinced that colleges are hotbeds of liberal fanaticism. i guess intelligence just can't beat ideology?

this vaccine is a great thing...now we can prevent at least one cancer. as far as it being 'forced'...most vaccines are forced anyway as most schools require certain shots or the child can't attend school. but we no longer have polio, diptheria, mumps, measles or rubella, etc. outbreaks that kill large amounts of people. so i'd have to say 'forced' innoculation is a good thing. a lot of people haven't lived thru an outbreak and as such have no experience, so they have the luxury of believing vaccines aren't truly necessary.

as for vaccines being linked to aids and cancer n such....i'll go with personal experience. my family has birthed, vaccinated and raised 83 babies in the last 20 years. other than normal fevers n general illness for a few days after a vaccine, not one has had adverse side effects such as aids, cancer or autism. i have cancer...but that's because i have family history (grandma n great grandma, who were never vaccinated anyway) but i am the only one in 83.

Yikes. Forced invasive procedures by the gov't, even if the end is good or right, can't ever be accepted as a good thing. What about forced administration of birth control for people who can't afford kids? What about forced lithium for people who are too aggressive or violent? I'm happy the vaccine exists, and I'd want my daughter vaccinated. I'm happy there is an "opt out" feature. But it is backward. There should be an "opt in" feature that involves signing up and paying for it.

how is that different from going to the doctor and getting it? opt in and pay seems pretty interchangeable with going to the doctor to get it.

honestly, id support forced birth control for people on welfare with one child.

I don't like the whole forced idea, myself. I don't want the government having the power to decide what's best for me.

Thank goodness soulsinging provided some logical opposition to JamMastaE. I'll grant that everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter what that opinion is based on, but it amazes me what fallacies people choose to believe. I noticed that NONE of JamMastaE's links were to serious, peer reviewed scientific or medical journals such as Science, Nature, JAMA, NEJM.

The Texas governor did a great thing by requiring the HPV vaccine and providing equal access to it. The vaccine (Gardasil) provides coverage against HPV strains 16 and 18, which are associated with ~70% of cervical cancers. It also protects HPV strains 6 and 11, which cause genital warts. I was lucky enough to have health insurance that covers this vaccine, but there are MANY WOMEN AND CHILDREN in this country who have no health coverage. The government mandates vaccines for things like Hepatitis B (which is can also be sexually transmitted), measles, mumps, rubella, diptheria, pertussis, etc to PROTECT the health of it's citizens. A simple shot is not an invasive procedure. Last year there were serious outbreaks of mumps in Iowa among groups of people who chose not to be vaccinated. That is called natural selection!

One more thing: no vaccine causes AIDS. That is because HIV causes AIDS. It is seriously irresponsible to suggest that the polio vaccine causes AIDS.
