    Nixon resigned under the pressure of the spying on Democrats involved in Watergate. He wasn't on trial for Vietnam, or the actions he took on that front. He inherited a war on his election in '68 and believed it was a war that could be won. Again, though, his pardon was based on the Watergate affair.
    I never said their crimes were comparable. Clearly, they weren't ... at least, not anything Nixon would have been tried for here. All I was saying was that I find it interesting that this country supposedly could not withstand the stress of seeing it's president on trial, while the nation of Iraq has had no trouble at all trying, convicting and executing their former leader, and I don't hear anyone talking about how this is a threat to their fledgling democracy.

    I see it kind of like the movie Hero. How the emperor unified all of China. The movie was able to sympathize with the emperor's ideals. Yet, we see the same thing in Iraq and it's a brutal dictatorship.

    Although, with all fairness, Iraq was unified by the British, but once they realized it wasn't working, they fucked off.

    The country would have loved seeing Nixon on trial, there was the problem. Ford came on the scene and acknowledged (in a subtle way he was acknowledging Nixon's emotional instability when he stated), the American nightmare had ended. There was nothing to serve America in going after Nixon in a court of law at that point. Not for Watergate.

    If you want to state a case against Nixon's delusion in regard to Vietnam, that's another topic.
