He was clearly playing on your overall primitive, outdated viewpoints of society. Your view of masculinity being one of them. It's a town full of losers and I'm pulling out of here to win0 -

I wonder who in this thread relates to the role of bigot."The opposite of a fact is falsehood, but the opposite of one profound truth may very well be another profound truth." ~ Niels Bohr

There are cards?!?! Can we get free pot if we have one?:) miller I think you'd be shocked at how few of "us" are anything but hippies. Now go back to 1952 and say hi to Ike.0 -

i prefer to be called a treehugger, "hippie" is just so non-descriptNo problem can be solved from the same consciousness that created it.

For the record, I have never considered myself feminist because of the backwards actions done in the name of feminism when supposedly furthering women's rights. Granted, the actual purposes of feminism aren't to be confused with the personal errors people have been known to attach to feminism. When the pure ideal appears clouded, it does not take away from the validity of the ideal. But I definitely hear your point, miller.
I agree. You also make valid points.America...the greatest Country in the world.0 -
CorporateWhore wrote:Why is it that people are forcing American boys to be so sensitive. So "understanding." So...feminine.
What's wrong with men being men? I notice that boys are given ADD medicine if they start acting up in class, and then they become little asexual zombies. Boys are doing worse in school because of it.
Boys should be encouraged, within limits, to be honest about their masculinity. They shouldn't be medicated to the point of lunacy. They should be encouraged to fall within a male role, as opposed to a female role.
I see this being translated into all aspects of American life. Even the war in Iraq. Americans get disgusted by 3,000 dead soldiers. That's no small number, but past wars have been significantly higher! We need to assess wars on their principles and not troop death counts. Worrying about troop deaths is inconsequential if the cause is just. If the cause is unjust, troops deaths are just as inconsequential. They are doing what they signed up to do either way, and we elect presidents to make decisions.
look at the up side whore. women are in the workforce and the men stay home and play. feminism has brought new freedom for men. a woman is more likely to get hired and the men stay home; tidy the house; and basically have the time they always wanted. don't mess up a good thing. shut your mouth and enjoy.0 -

Hey, I'm not surprised I'm getting so much flak for this is in a Pearl Jam message board.
Nonetheless, over-generalizations are silly. Though, men do generally gravitate toward certain behavior (some don't, admittedly). I'm just saying that we shouldn't put men down all the time when they act like men. Boys should not be discouraged from exhibiting certain masculine behavior. When a boy acts out in class or gets in a fight at school, you discipline him. You don't put him on drugs. He needs a father to discipline him sufficiently. Fathers should be given the opportunity to run their families as they see fit, with the natural and equal influence of mothers in their respective roles. Men and women are different and are good at different things.
Case in point: Everybody Loves Raymond, The Simpsons, Family Guy, and most family sitcoms. The dad is a goddamn barbarian numbskull who needs his wife to direct everything in his life or else he will live in a barn. He always has to say "I'm sorry." For what? Being what he was born to be?
I think, if society is guilty of anything, it's failing to be "understanding" of the male role. Everyone is expected to be understanding of women, but women are not forced to understand the male role because he is the barbarian and cannot be understood.
I will leave you with a quote from Sigmund Freud: "A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity."All I know is that to see, and not to speak, would be the great betrayal.

This attempt to create a gender-blind society is hilarious. At least say what you believe instead of telling other people they're wrong. All I know is that to see, and not to speak, would be the great betrayal.

It was just funny because you think generalizations are silly, yet you are making generalizations about the roles of fathers and mothers in families. All families are different as far as who is the discipline parent, who is the consoling parent, who is the parent who acts more like a friend, etc. There are no assigned roles for men or women except in the process of conception and birth. After that, it's all about who can do what best. Some fathers cannot discipline their kids or be the dominant figure in the family to save their lives....and some mothers cannot be emotional cushions for their kids to save their lives.0
