D'oh. I feel like I have taken my defense of CC as far as it can go. You are on your own now, Cornell. Good luck with all that crap...

  • Well, it's not as bad as Part of Me might have indicated, but it's certainly not a sound I'm interested in. It does sound like it might have potential if he loses the drum machine and stuffs when he takes it on the road.
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

See I actually quite like the melody and vibe of the song and his voice sounds in good shape. But, why the need for the generic backing music? That's nothing that wouldn't have sounded better with traditional instruments.

Exactly. It had potential to be, at the least, a decent venture towards a 'soul' sound. But it just sounds like Chris Cornell singing karaoke to a Justin Timberlake song. But I guess that's what the kids are into these days.

The lyrics aint too shabby either, I like the chorus. I just snagged these from CC's message board:

    Baby
I used to watch your flowers grow
    Now it's rainin'
And all your petals turn to stone
    I been prayin'
I turn around and see my rose
    But you've faded
You let me down, now it's time to go

You're like diamonds and I'm like glass
Like oil and water we always clash
Sometimes my confessions are hard for me
I tell you now I'm setting you free

That's why I'm long gone, long gone
You need to let me fly alone

It's just annoying because I can really hear in my head how good this would sound if it was a stripped down acoustic song. As far as know he's still touring with his band from the previous tours, so presumably all the new songs are going to have more traditional arrangements live.

Eh.. if its what I was expecting from him it might not be bad, but with Cornell I want to hear a real band.
  • The vocal melody and chord progression is alright. So why the crappy instrumental stuff?

Exactly. I think they would have been far better taking elements of Timbaland's electronic style and blending it with the traditional rock set up, now that could sound good. It will be interesting to see how this stuff sounds live slotted in with his other songs.....

I don't like it one bit. It definitely sounds like Timbaland's crap. I give up on Cornell.

Thanks for that link. The weirdest part is, if the entire song sounded like the outro (about 5:00 onwards), I'd be pretty happy with it. Did Cornell actually think the drum loops sounded better?

I was thinking the same thing about the 5 min+ mark, sounds like it's leading into another song, hopefully something better than the shit spewing out of the first 5 mins of the appropriately titled "Long Gone."

I bet he'll win the grammy for best NEW artist. it's going to be very hard explaining that this guy was once in a heavy metal band. i'm mean, i think it's really a good song in today's standards, i'm sure it will do well and be very popular, but as a kid who grew up listening to songs like "nothing to say," "outshined," and "pretty noose," it just breaks my heart. i was hoping for.... well not this. i wish him the best and success and i'm thankful for his back catalouge.

  • I don't like it, but I don't hate it. It's better than I expected though so I guess that's one positive thing. His voice sounds really good, I wish he would do the whole fucking album acoustic. This is annoying. I cannot see that song being a "hit in the clubs". lol

I actually like the song, lol.
Then again... i've always been a Cornell junkie and have liked everything he's ever done.
But interested to listen to the entire album.
