Yeah, it started a bit slow, but then it picked up the pace and had lots of funny bits.

i wasn't sure what to make of this after seeing an ad for it. is it meant to be like a spoof movie, like Scary Movie, or is it like meant to be a proper horror type movie? i think i might skip it or wait for dvd and rent it. was it shot in 3D or is it one of those ones where 3d was added in later to cash in on the whole 3D thing??

dont know about the 3D thing. and its a serious film, no spoof. all i heard were the words farrell and vampire and i was in. and what better city to set a vamp film in than las vegas.

Oh ok, the ad I saw had some twilight reference and something about "the rules changed" so I wasn't sure if it was an outright spoof or kinda like what the scream movies are to the slasher genre. Twilight and true blood and all that crap has kinda turned me off vampire type movies. It seems to be all the rage again so everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. It's funny no one has tried to ride the Harry potter success and make some rip off wizard type movie.

there is some good fantasy fiction aimed at the kids that while not necessarily going the dominant wizard route ala HP, do have magical elements with witches and wizards being present. the one im most interested in is magnus bane from the mortal instruments series. i think this series of films will be the most appealing to the HP set. its got everything imo. though tbh im a bit disappointed at the clary/valentine dynamic. seemed a bit too his dark materials for my liking.

Is it immature that I found "mortal instrument" funny??

I'm not into Harry potter, saw the 1st one and maybe half of the second. Just couldn't get into it. Plus I can't read so I never read the books.

I started watching insidious last night, it shows promise. Written by Leigh whannell and directed by James whan who did the saw franchise.

  • I just saw the commercial tonight for "The Thing". Apparently it's a prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 move "The Thing", which is one of my favorite movies ever, but this looks pretty lame. I know you can't judge a film by a commercial, but everything about it was just generic, and the only parts that look good appeared to be lifted straight from the original.

ooh i saw a poster for the thing hanging in the cinema yesterday. i got scared just thinking it was a remake... but as you said its a prequel.. which is possibly just as bad. i shall call it the lucas effect. ;) though planet of the apes was a good film.

Well, it takes place in the Norwegian Camp in the days leading up to the original film, but it seems like they lifted so much from the original (actually remaking scenes) that I would call it a prequel/remake. It's made by the same people that made the Dawn Of The Dead remake. Another favorite movie of mine that I didn't care for the remake of. Well, it was OK, but not nearly as good as Romero's original.

    Drive

The year of Ryan Gosling continues ... I will forewarn that this movie is not for everyone ... there are some scenes of brutal violence ... also, it's not action packed ...

but it is sublimely brilliant ... the characters ... the drama built on what is known as opposed to what is said ... ryan gosling and albert brooks are fantastic ... same with the guy who plays shannon ...

for those that like darker movies ... this one's for you!

I've seen multiple reviews comparing it to "Bullitt", which is a fucking great movie. I'm tempted to see this, but I'll probably end up waiting for DVD.

i just got back from this. i enjoyed it, wasn't great, but pretty damn good. The violent scenes were pretty awesome. I jumped out of my seat one even. And the three girls in front of me were cringing and screaming at certain parts.

I wasn't really a ryan gosseling fan to begin with but the past two movies i've seen him in i thought he did well (crazy stupid love and this). Oh yeah the guy who played Shannon was the dad in Malcolm In The Middle  ( i didn't realize who he was until i got back home and looked at the cast.

yeah ... i've watched a few of gosling movies and he continues to get better ... his performance in crazy, stupid, love deserves an oscar imo ... it's not easy playing a character like that ...

as for drive ... i love these kinds of movies ... character and story driven (no pun intended) ...

i;d suggest watching everything gosling is in. i make a point of seeing any movie that comes out that he's in. He was mindblowing in Lars and the Real Girl, one of the best films of 08, and should have been nominated for blue valentine. havent seen crazy stupid yet, but he and michelle williams in blue valentine were devastating. and half nelson in 06 was amazing. The notebook was great as well.

He;s one of the best of our generation.

just watched "buried" with ryan reynolds. that was annoying.
  • no im a fan of great art. someone as talented as gosling deserves to be praised and recognized. i make a point of going out of my way to see the work of people who are head and shoulders above the rest. any sean penn movie, any phillip seympour hoffman, daniel day lewis, brad pitt, johnny depp etc...

and thats crazy you didnt like buried. one of the best and most underrated films of the year. A hyped up movie that lived up to the hype. few thrillers these days, keep up the suspense from frame 1, until the last second. Unique film as well, nearly every frame is of him in a coffin, with what, just a bic lighter and a cell phone. brilliant film. Ryan Reynolds deserves praise for that role
  • Yes, Gosling is shockingly brilliant and Drive totally cements it. Here's my full review: http://wp.me/p1LZHn-5B
