to remain seated for such a song would be considered bad manners in my book.

it's just not happening, no matter what the circumstances.
I was gonna say how come nobody ever admits to being THAT person (sit down, I can't see)? Cos there are evidently quite a few of them... but finally one person's owned up to it... I just don't get it. Only concert I've ever been to that was seated and actually had most people sitting was the Aussie Pink Floyd.. but the odd time there'd be a few people standing up for certain songs and it didn't seem to bother anyone... it certainly didn't bother me. I love seeing people get into it... whatever ways they have of doing that... once they're not hurting anyone!

there is a huge difference between getting into a show, enjoying your favorite songs
and behaving like an asshole. showing common courtsey to those around you is just a given,
or at least it should be whether it is at a concert or in a supermarket.

so no, i will never be sitting down for any rendition of Porch, ever.

i am simply physically incapable of doing so.
    Nice shirt.

I'm used to being seated, quiet and not allowed to dance at shows. I go to Ram's Head in Annapolis often. Right before the show, they announce NO TALKING. It is like being at church, but that's the way it has to be to see artists I like in a small setting. (and no pics with a flash)

They're called MANNERS...and no one should have to be reminded about them. But some of the crowd at the first two Vancouver shows made me feel bad for Ed, especially the first show, with inappropriate remarks coming from the crowd, interrupting Ed's chats, drunken behavior, etc.

The venues that Ed is playing are not the big arenas that are conducive to smoking anything...they are very small, intimate music houses/theaters - do your smoking before you go in.

Yeah, people should shut the fuck up at acoustic gigs. They should practice shutting up and listening, by going to some local acoustic open mics and showcases, or some folk clubs, if they've never been before. If you want to whoop and shout and fall over, go to a GWAR gig or something.

It's funny. If everyone sat down and shut up for the duration of an Eddie show, people would be on here in droves complaining about how lame the crowd was. Nothing says Eddie Vedder show like a watching in pure silence with a smattering of golf claps in the first notes of the songs and then again at the end of each songs. You people crack me up.

Can I stand up during Porch?? Saw him in New York last summer and got yelled because I stood up and tried to get into Porch. ITS PORCH! And it was closing the set. Such an intense song, can't handle it sitting down, I don't care if its acoustic or not you have to rock out to that song. I bet the person behind me thought I was only getting into it because it was a Pearl Jam song and thought it was the only thing I recognized. Its just more intense than anything else he plays in the set until the end.
ny1? 3rd row or so? r u a chick in love with stone?..if so i was behind you..
i remember a pair of girls getting yelled at for standing up during porch

even if it wasnt you i really wanted to stand up for porch but no one moved.i didnt wanna ruin it for anyone
i went nuts in my chair..i was hovering half sitting..guess im a weenie but i can sit in my seat if thats how the crowd is

No, I am a dude, I think I was in the 5th or 6th row on the left of center.
    32 shows and counting...

This topic always makes me think of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ew3AOlbJXos

At first i didn't pay attention to this video i thought it was the infamous Rick Astley video (you know THAT video  ) but this video is really great thanks bigeye21!

Maybe they should show this video on a screen to the audience just before the show starts...

Seriously, I've been reading through this thread, and it seems quite funny that the people arguing either side don't seem to be listening to what the other is saying, and instead just turn it in to an argument of two extremes...

To the folks saying it is a "rock concert" and audience members should be able to do whatever they want:

No one (or at least not the majority) is suggesting that the audience not be allowed to have so much as a single drink, nor that they should never open their mouths to cheer or clap their hands. But there is a difference between showing your enjoyment and appreciation of the show, and YELLING OUT irrelevent comments in the MIDDLE of a song or when Ed is telling a story. If you really feel like yelling out a song request, at least do it when Ed is not in the middle of singing or telling a story - rock concert or not, yelling out irrelevent comments when someone else (ie. the artist everyone paid to see) is singing or talking, is RUDE. And in the shows I went to, it was clear that Ed's patience for such people was wearing very thin. (Audience member, after a flurry of song requests were being yelled out by audience members, "Let him play whatever he wants!", to which Ed replied: "I like that idea").

Also, remember this is NOT a Pearl Jam concert. It is a mellow, mostly-acoustic, intimate solo show. So, yes, it is generally expected that the audience will behave differently at these shows than they would at at full-fledge PJ show.

yes, your reply reminds me of when I went to a tiny venue in 2006 in frederick, maryland to see brian vander ark.
the owner of the venue got on the mic and said, "no talking please, this is a listening venue." I've seen it written before on similar venues' websites too. I was glad b/c then the videos on youtube are so good.

The artist might, if people are having a loud conversation about shoes (or even throwing them, knowing some fans), in the middle of a quiet passage of music.

I wouldn't go that far. There are plenty of quiet alcoholics in this world. The problem is with getting your average metalhead beavis or butthead to realise that Eddie Vedder is not playing a shouty rock concert.

I whole heartedly agree with this post! I was at the DC 1 show, and while it wasn't as bad as some other shows it really got annoying for those of us trying to listen to the stories. So I hope there is no need to remind people to be respectful of the artist and enjoy the show.

Heck I was just at a Buddy Guy show Thursday night and people were shouting out things interupting Buddy during stories and songs. At one point he just stopped the story and played another song, meanwhile his message of blues music rarely being played on the radio anymore was lost. And that's ashame since the blues needs to be heard!! By the way it was an incredible show, that man at 73 can outplay some half his age, excellent bluesman.

I think Bruce Springsteen used to have an announcement imploring the crowd to stay seated and quiet during his solo acoustic shows before he'd even take the stage. Maybe Ed could try that but that might incite the assholes to be more of a nuisance.

Yeah, you can do anything you want at a show, but I guarantee that the people there to enjoy it, as well as the artist, don't think you're nearly as cool as you think you are.

We were at one of the sold-out Flight of the Conchords shows last night at the Tower and the people shouting out song requests and comments were a drag. The band handled them well, but it's a shame that they had to. The pauses to deal with them made the rest of the crowd restless.

By the way, if you're in the third row having an audible conversation during an acoustic show, that look the artist is giving you is not because he's curious about what you're saying.
    "Information is not knowledge.
    Knowledge is not wisdom.
    Wisdom is not truth.
    Truth is not beauty.

    Love is not music.
