IT"S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR........playoff hockey. I was so proud of my team last year and I am already so proud of them this year. I love my team and I love my city. LET'S GO PENS. Bring home the hardware boys.
What boggles my mind is that Hossa evidently not only turned the Penguins long term offer down, but it was rumored that Vancouver offered him 9 years at $81M. I think Ken Holland played a Jedi mind trick on him to come to Detroit.
Twas Edmonton.
I hope he scores a hat trick every game against Pittsburgh.
I was going to create a thread just for this but I'll put it here

Bryant Gumbel takes a shot at the NHL, and it's mismanagement....from Real Sports on HBO
Finally tonight a few words about hockey. Yeah, I know, the fewer the better. Now a days it seems the mere mention of the game sends most viewers in search of a clue. But hockey is not dead. You know it's somehow fitting that it was Rodney Dangerfield who first said he went to a fight and a hockey game broke out, because like Rodney, Hockey gets no respect and with good reason.
The game is poorly run, it has teams in cities where it doesn't belong, it's hard to fully appreciate on tv, most of its players are anonymous and their season is way too long.
But these days even a casual glance at one of the NHL playoff games reminds you of how great a sport it still can be. The problem is even that casual glance is hard to come by. The NHL's current TV contract limits the games exposure and the competition for attention, hockey is always going to lose in a head to head match up with basketball. A sensible solution would be a shorter regular season in order to ensure their playoff games are contested in April when they have the stage to themselves. The games could thus fill a void in the calendar and get the kind of singular attention it desperately needs. But all that would demand the kind of forethought and leadership that hockey has never had. Until and unless its come to that don't expect the games fortunes to improve and that is too bad. Because if you are looking for real grit , real teamwork and real effort, hockey's got it. Unlike many of the more glamorous NBA's counterparts the NHL guys play hard every night. They play together, they play with pain and they play with a purpose. Predictably what they don't have for all that is a catchy marketing phrase but that doesn't mean that hockey is not a sport or amazing athletes.

Sad but true. Never ceases to amaze me how the NHL doesn’t learn from its mistakes.
Once in a generation talent comes along, and they move to an unknown broadcaster in the U.S. They did it in eighties, left ESPN for Sports Channel while Gretzky, Lemieux and Messier were in their prime. Did it again a few years back with Versus. Now everyone is missing out on Crosby, Ovechkin and Malkin.
Atlanta? Couldn’t keep the Flames now struggling with the Thrashers. Move them and the Coyotes back north. Love to see franchises back in Winnipeg, Quebec or even better…..bring back the Whale!

As a fan of the old W.H.A., keep the Whale dead.

The only negative now for me is that I'm going to miss Game #6 for Ed solo on Tuesday... I really wanted to go to night #1 and got shut out... Maybe not too late to get a DVR.

He is correct on many levels.

Not too much of a hockey fan but I'd love to see Crosby win a title. He and Ovechkin are the reason why I've been watching a bit of NHL lately. I was rooting for the Caps in their second round 7 games match up but oh well.
What a series. What a season. Pens are the champs. What a story. I was in 6th grade the last time the Pens won the cup. At one point I watched or listened to every game for almost a decade. After such a long wait. After last year. This feels so good. I love my team. I love my city.
It wasn't a great hockey game last night, but it's tough not to get excited for a game 7 in the Cup Finals. Glad the Pens won (Cup will be coming to Thunder Bay again).
I have realized that I can't stand Nik Kronwall. That's a good thing. It gives me someone to wish ill when watching the Wings (1 thing to watch for is better than 0 things). He always looks for big hits on vulnerable players but if he ever finds himself in a vulnerable position where he might get hit, he can't get rid of the puck and peel off fast enough. I find myself longing to see someone take a good crack at him while he is reaching ahead for a puck and drop the little Swede.
Great pressure by the Wings in the last 5 minutes. Really thought that they were going to tie it.
Despite the so-so games in the Finals (there were some real dog games to watch), these were a great playoffs. There was no shortage of great hockey games to watch (outside of the Detroit series' - lol). Can't wait for the Washington - Chicago finals nexts year.
