Where has Santana gone? Why does he suck so much recently? Its absolutely killing me.
It appears his velocity was down. He threw 25 pitches at 90 or above and none over 91. In the nine-run fourth, his final 13 pitches were in the mid to high 80s and only one was at 90 (the Matsui home run).
The Santana that I've seen throws slightly harder than that and a slight loss in velocity combined with poor location/execution is a deadly combination for anyone.
That being said, Santana's track record would lead me to believe that this was just a blip. (assuming he's not hurt).
I would believe that its just a blip too, if his 3 or so starts before yesterday weren't so mediocre too. I really believe he's injured the Mets just aren't saying anything... It definitely wouldn't be the first time...

Pedro's asking price is too high for teams. It's one thing to give an incentive-laden five million deal to him, quite another to guarantee that amount, especially when you can't guarantee how healthy he is, which we saw during the last three years of his deal.

Cora has done a commendable job, but seriously, this talk about Cora taking Jose's place is just a way for people to jump on the bash Reyes bandwagon, even though he's a great player.

I like the fighting spirit, but it would qualify as a giant handwave. Today's gem was someone trying to say the cause of Santana's bad starts were the bad karma he created by commenting on Murphy dropping the flyball in Florida in the second start of the season.

Wright basically got in Pelfrey's face in the dugout and was like "you pitched well, but you shouldn't be satisfied with how you pitched. You're a great pitcher and you can do even better." Wright is really beginning to step into the leadership role on and off the field too. He's been going out to the mound a bunch recently to try and settle the pitchers down. Its great to see.

Its kind of comical at this point with Beltran on the DL. I mean, Beltran, Reyes, Delgado, Putz, Maine, and Perez are all on the DL. Its just ridiculous.

I think he's trying to hit for average rather than power, and frankly its working. Although, he should be able to do both. He batted .325 w/30 HRs in '07, so there's no reason he shouldn't be able to still hit at least 25 home runs.
