Well, it's official, I got a lay off notice. My last day will be June 19th and they gave me this month's notice because they like me so much. it was inevitable, but I have been trying hard to look for a job in the past 3 months; one phone interview, one face to face interview, both lead to nothing.

In a worst case scenario, I am laid off, collect unemployment for the first time to manage bills and put 100% effort into looking for a great job, AND I can defer my damned student loans for a year and let the government pay on the interest.

Great interview, great job, lovely work environment, nice people... but very low pay. I want to cry. I wanted to take this job so badly.

I'm sorry you had to turn it down cos of pay Simone. It's hard enough to get jobs as it is, and I've noticed a lot of employers are offering a lot less than they would have normally. Even IT jobs are far less well-paid I've noticed as a contractor friend of mine says the same sort of jobs he was getting previously, which paid about £60K, were now being offered at £35K pa.

Hope you have better luck next time eh. (((HUGS)))
yep, wages have gone way down... my new job is paying crap but it feels like an entry level job... everyone gets on great, goes out together and it's very relaxed. It's worth the pay cut... at least for a while anyway. There's a girl on the same level as me who started in December and she got promoted on Friday  so I like that there are great opportunities and it's doing something I've NEVER done before which could lead to much better pay in the long run... kinda a career change. I'm really loving it at the mo.

wow....evidently i have NOT kept up with this thread! helen got a job?! wooohooooooo, belated congrats! i know how long you were going out of your mind looking...so lower wages or not...kudos to you! hope it leads to bigger and brighter things! :D

whitepants....sooooo sorry to hear about the layoff. :( total bummer, even if you were semi-expecting it. truly sucks. you seem to have a pretty good attitude about it tho, which definitely works in your favor.....and i wish you and everyone else out there looking....GOOD LUCK! :)

me...things are good, overall. i am cautiously optimistic about it tho, certainly not over-confident. i do not want to get laid off, there are no signs of layoffs for client service staff.....yet. i will 'feel better' about the situation in august, early september. our fiscal year ends in july, and august is a usual period of promotions and staff changes. it also is the kick-off of our busy season, so hope it IS busy....important for my employment! :P we DId decide to drop my health insurance thru my job due the rising costs and i am going back on my husbands. sucks b/c it still raises our costs $100 a month, but it's 'worth' it overall for the better/cheaper coverage. oh and on a positive note, commution fees did not go up $50 a month, only $18....so that's one good thing...... :D

well, i was officially laid off last week. we were prepared for the worst & it's a good thing that we save the way we do. i was able to find a part time job working with troubled kids this summer. it won't pay all of the bills, but it's a start. it's tough to see our income slashed like that. my wife is also looking for a new job. we're being aggressive with our searches..yup, it's tough.

thanks! 8-) we've both landed part-time gigs & that should help a bit. it's hard b/c we're both full time grad students, so it's hard to commit to something in the Fall that would work w/ our class schedules. we're just going to have to keep looking & hope that something pops up that'll work.

I'm so sorry Simone. That's awful. One of my friends is in the same boat now too, from June. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you to find something much better soon.(hugs)

I just completed my best week of 2009 (money-wise). On Saturday night, one couple I waited on tipped me $50 on a $90 ticket. I'm still baffled over that one. I mean, I realize I'm good, but I never realized I wasthat good! Another couple tipped me $40 on $80!!!
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

I'm lucky enough to work for a company which caters for the middle-market (chain of Bakers). So the people who can't afford the classier stuff fall back on the cheaper (but still decent) goods which means this company has been posting profits all through this tough time. Hopefully things will stay that way.

Since I can't afford to finish college right now and I'm going mad doing 2 retail jobs for no pay.... I decided to take bartending classes and go that route. Let's hope this works out a little better then what I'm doing. My parents aren't too keen on the idea...but I'm 28 and need to make my own decisions. I guess they fear I won't finish college. And well I guess my dad doesn't like the thought of me getting tips just cause I have tits. Oh well... Gotta do something, need a change.

I'm on furlough this week, and the first week in August. I'm covered for the 25% decrease in pay this month, but I just need to plan superwell for August. I know of three people who left my company because they were able to get other jobs. That's encouraging. DC is the association capital of the nation, and a lot of people just jump from one association to another. It's good to know in case the furlough turns into layoffs.

Well, it's also encouraged me to start studying for the GRE. The last time I took it was 1990. Who knew?

i would say i'm lucky to work for a defence company (which is what i thought all of the last 6 months) but since the UK seems keen to get out of buying eurofighters.....who knows what's gonna happen to the companies that make it and rely on it....... :?

good luck to those who have been laid off though
  • my work has turned into living hell. i've been talking to another company but getting dragggggggged along to say they least. so basically i have to say the world of work has turned me upside down and created misery.

i know the economy, and many say those who have jobs are lucky. i understand. but sometime that just aint good enough.

I got the news in February that my position will be terminated for budget reasons on November 1, after 8 1/2 years of employment. I was told to use part of every work day doing something to get a new job, so that's all nice. I realize that most people in my position don't get 8+ months to look for a job while still being employed. I applied to a handful of places that never seem to acknowledge they received my application/resume, the ones that did sent a questionnaire which contained the question of how much I currently earn. Then I don't hear back from them either. Less than 5 months left...

I never answered that question... cos the jobs I was going for were to earn at least half of what I WAS earning in Dublin.

I may be going for promotion soon :D a supervisor in another team is leaving at the end of the month so I'm gonna go for it anyway... cos, for me, this job is all about the experience and learning new stuff and I'm certainly getting to do that. Never gone for a promotion before, never needed to so this would be more experience :D
