He asked me what I like to do in my free time, I said concerts. To which he asked who I like to go see. When I mentione pearl jam the convo took off! It's a gym and he mentioned that he plays pearl jam concert dvds there, that's when I leaned over the desk and gave him a high five :P

    ELAINE: Is that bad?

JERRY: What do you think the Nazis were doin’? (Imitates the Nazi’s salute) That was the heil-five.

just kidding--I just immediately thought of this episode when I read your post. that's a great story! again, good luck.

Yeah I had second thoughts on the high five in the car on the drive home. But I'm a girl and I threw in a little giggle too so maybe he thought it was just silly cute ;) :P

I just had an interview... Where we ended up talking about pearl jam! Hehe... I really want this job!!
I had an internship interview that went like that. The paper's executive asked what kind of music I like and I said "Well, I'm kinda obsessed with this band call Pearl Jam." His face lit up!

Then the next hour all we talked about was the band.

The best job interview ever for me, and I got a free lunch out of it.

Four more lay-offs yesterday, which brings the total to 9 this year. Cutting us back to 4-9 hour days to close the building on Friday, four hours vacation so no pay cut. It does seem things like things are slowly picking up though.

You mean in your company or in general? It seems like all the agencies I'm with say things are really slow, one woman admitted it was "horrendous". We have a bank holiday on monday, you'd think employers would be calling in for cover while people take holidays next week, but...nothing.

I meant in the company I work for. They're telling us volume will be flat through the end of the 2nd quarter, which is way down over last year. The last couple months have been a little better though, hopefully it continues.

I had a full-time interview the other day at a place a family friend works out, I was told they liked my stuff. I think the interviewer was trying to scare me off by saying how much overtime she works, so we'll see what happens with this.

Where I work didn't cut benefits, and they didn't cut salary. They didn't freeze salary, and they are doing their best to not cut more people (8 positions cut in December 08). In order to do this we have 2 weeks *furlough*. The first week in June and the first week in August we are not allowed to work, and we are not paid. I still say management is working the best they can, and I appreciate this least painful solution. It's a drag to figure out how to pay for things for those two months when I'll be 25% in pay down.

However, again, at least no one was laid off, no benefits were cut, and no salaries were frozen.

I've been laid off before. There were endless possibilities then, and I even tried a new career. However, as I know more than I knew then I just focus on here and now and not the long term future so much.

I'm sure there will be other benefits but that's bound to be a plus. :D

That is hard. I tend to have a hard time leaving the people I've worked with, or at least the ones that I've had regard for.

Sounds frustrating. Usually the environment and people will make up for a lot but if the pay is too low then I guess you can't make it work.

At the end of the day, the bills gotta get paid. If a certain job doesn't pay enough for basic necessities, then no matter how wonderful is, reality always smacks you in the face. I'll find another opportunity. thx.

  • first i just want to say i do appreciate having a job. but my job has made me discover a new hatred for the general public. im a cashier at a stupid food store and i have never come across such ignorant people in my whole life. these people come in my line with 400 $$ food orders and stand there watching me ring up their food when they could be bagging. and when im in express why do people who have WICchecks like to come in that line? . $7.50 is not enough pay in my opinion. i like working sundays though when i get $9.25. just three more months until i'll be in college and i wont have to work there anymore!

yeah, the first time I did it it was a big company, so not a big deal. but this time it is a small firm with 2 partners, one of whom works really had and the other is just a nice guy. I feel like I am abandoning them because the one other associate is worthless and the staff is just the worst bunch of brats (40 year old women who act like teenagers) you can imagine.

I'm big on loyalty, but I cant go down with the ship when I have made numerous suggestions of how to improve the firm's operations and efficiency but they refuse to make changes. a more professional environment, better people to learn from and a 50% raise...it was a no brainer.

shitty jobs are a rite of passage, we all have them, but you're in school so you can eventually do what you want. that's more opportunity than a lot of people get or make use of in their entire lives. good luck.

I'm sorry you had to turn it down cos of pay Simone. It's hard enough to get jobs as it is, and I've noticed a lot of employers are offering a lot less than they would have normally. Even IT jobs are far less well-paid I've noticed as a contractor friend of mine says the same sort of jobs he was getting previously, which paid about £60K, were now being offered at £35K pa.

Hope you have better luck next time eh. (((HUGS)))

yep, wages have gone way down... my new job is paying crap but it feels like an entry level job... everyone gets on great, goes out together and it's very relaxed. It's worth the pay cut... at least for a while anyway. There's a girl on the same level as me who started in December and she got promoted on Friday  so I like that there are great opportunities and it's doing something I've NEVER done before which could lead to much better pay in the long run... kinda a career change. I'm really loving it at the mo.
