I'm still here, but morale is low and I'm sending out resumes. It's bleak, but nothing's impossible. I have experience and a degree, so, every little thing helps.
man, sorry to hear that.... :(
you definitely have the right attitude tho, good luck!
our firm is on very solid ground, it's many of our clients who are not. thus, we are belt-tightening to weather the storm as it goes. it does seem, thankfully, that the powers that be DO want to maintain staff levels, actually are still hiring, albeit not as agressively in the past. since we are still doing well, overall, even with cutting fees and the like...it seems we're just triming the fat of excessive spending which is a good thing, period....cut wasteful practices.....and it seems the partners are focused on the long-term, when things turn-around in the industries we support...that we will be well-prepared, well-staffed....and profits will once again go on the upswing. i appreciate the cautious optimism, i just hope salaries/hours don't get touched in the interim....
*fingers crossed*
thank you, what I have realized is that having a positive but realistic attitude is productive and can help you in the long run. I don't have time for woe is me crap, this shit is real and in all my working adult life, I have never seen the employment outlook so bleak. Good luck to you too.
agreed.
it really does make a big difference. i know over 2 years ago when i was looking for career change, it was scary and it wasn't as 'easy' as i had hoped.....but you keep on keeping on. nowadays it really IS the ugliest i've personally seen out in the workforce, so absolutely...try to focus on the positives and just keep hoping, and working towards, better days. still a bit scary, but no point obsessing over things out of your control...and focus on the things you can, and do what you can.

I accepted my "reassignment" today. Leaving a job after 10.5 years is a little difficult, even if the job sucked most of the time...at least I get to port my seniority to a my new job (which starts on May 1st, although I will be on vacation in Seattle!)...I really need to consider myself fortunate rather than pissed I was pushed out... will be working 3:30pm to 11:30pm M-F, which should be pretty good...
Sorry to those who have lost their jobs...my husband still hasn't found a job and hasn't worked since early February...I know it can be very tough...be philanthropic0 -
After 6 1/2 years, I am closing my children's boutique on May 9. It's bittersweet--the economy has just tanked the store, and I am just done. Time to move on...I still want you all to "take care"--I am just damn tired of typing it.

I work in Porn. I'd love to say that we're 100% recession-proof, but we're not. It's still been a hard road these last few months. but that being said.. I'm sure a lot more safe than most people, I'd like to think.
We'll see.0 -

I'm looking for work, it sucks to say the least. Staying with my dad at the mo, but he's moving out in June so I'll probably move in with my mum then if I still haven't found a job. Only found 6 jobs to apply for, and fucked the application for 4 of them (it was 1 application for 4 jobs and I filled it out whilst travelling round Ecuador, oops). WOOHOOPaul

I've been out of work since last June. I'm more fortunate than a lot of people because my husband's job is pretty secure and we're able to pay our bills but we aren't able to get ahead and I'm worried about using up our savings if we have any kind of emergency. My job search hasn't been very encouraging.
At the end of March I was hired by the Census Bureau for a temporary job that was scheduled to last through June 18. I went through a week of training and then started canvassing neighborhoods to update addresses in preparation for the 2010 Census. One of my neighbors seemed to think it must be kind of a humiliating experience for me but I loved it! I liked being outside all day, I liked getting lots of exercise (I slept like a baby), and the 99% people I met were friendly and nice to me. It also paid well for a temp job and I felt like I had a little bit of a cushion in my job search. Not to mention the boost just because someone finally thought I was worth hiring.
The only problem was that we finished all our work last week. My supervisor had told everyone on our team to wait for word from him about the next assignment. This morning I got a text from him that we were all meeting so he could collect our equipment and supplies to turn in. When I saw him, he said that he is being laid off too. We could all be called back since supposedly they don't want to train more people but I'm bummed out. I hate not knowing anything.
I guess I'll go back to reworking my resume and rethinking my job search. :?"The stars are all connected to the brain."0 -

not paid?
as in, for the day...a week.....2 weeks......?
how does that work?
:?
man, that is rough!
again, hope things turn around!
this is our 'slowdown' period, and always is that...no matter the economy. however, i really don't like having next to no work - it's dull, but most especially with all *this* BS in the economy, it makes me nervous. our 'busy season' wasn't nearly as *busy*...but i guess enough. the real test is august/september. our fiscal year ends june 30th....promotions and usually raises follow in august.......i just want to be sure to have a job. actually, layoffs usually wait until the holidays, simply b/c the fall is our truly insane time, and only come later does it slow down enough to let people go. so far, hasn't happened at all - and that does seem to be the intention of the partners, no layoffs - so just have to hope things start to improve. we're in fine shape, but our clients aren't....and that eventually ould have a negative affect on all.........Stay with me...

curious....I think I'm fairly close to the average age around here...which would mean a lot of people would have parents around the same age....ie: nearing retirement age.
How are everyone's folks fairing these days?
I worry about mine a lot more than I worry about myself (holy role reversal batman)....
They were on the cusp of retirement...worked their entire lives just to lose almost half of everything they put aside in the course of a month or two. They're busy working on revised retirement plans...I feel terrible for them. Their expectations for the golden years are much higher than mine....they'll adjust, but it's gotta be tough :(0 -

yikes!
i am older...and i have MUCH older parents, same with my husband. so we both only have one parent left, each, and both have been long retired....so 'luckily' for them, not much effect. however, for my husband's siblings, also much older.....i think it's a hardship! his oldest sis is approaching 60!......and they have 2 married daughters, 2 grandkids....and while they've aleways lived/saved modestly, i think it does hurt. his bro was/is looking for an early retirement, planning on moving to florida and all that.....selling his house, etc. i'd guess he's 'losing' almost 200k of home value as opposed to if he sold 2 years earlier. i know what a shambles our investments are in, i cannot even imagine.....! i truly feel for anyone at/near retirement at this point!Stay with me...

We'll see.
The sex industry is recession proof because at the end of the day, most humans, that's all they have. Thank God I'm above that, but to each their own.

I am finding that searching for a job after 50 is a very different ball game. Not whining, just realize that people's perceptions of me are different from what I've experienced in the past."The stars are all connected to the brain."0
