I'm happy to report that this morning my brother called me and told me I got a job with the company he works for. I am a union construction worker and have been out of work for 6 weeks now. The owner of the company called him about the job he is working on and said he got my message on the phone earlier this week. He asked my bro if I was still out of work. He said yes and this guy offered to hire me because he just got a new job starting monday and didn't have anyone to put there. So my brother relayed the message to me and I am happy now. Wasn't sure how long I was gonna be out of work. A lot of weight has been lifted off because I am the only one in my household who earns income and I have a wife and a child to provide for. So, my work situation is great now, well, will be come Monday morning.

    HUGE congrats!

must be a major relief, period...but most especially as the sole breadwinner in the house!

Crappy day at work today. We sent the other waiter and the busser home, so I was all by myself & only waited on 15 people! Lousy! I only made $47 in tips and was there for 5 hours!!! Ugh! Thank God I still get paid $9/hour on top of tips...
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

My friend is a Nurse. She makes about $55 an hour. Make sure to tip the guy cleaning out the bedpans at the local hospital instead. ;)

    oh you mean proper nurse.

we have auxilliary nurses here in the UK and they do the bedpan kinda stuff... they earn nowhere near $55 an hour... a staff nurse will get good money but still not that.

anyway, my point is that if waiting staff make that kinda money then it re-inforces my no-tipping stance come October  ;)

My friend is definitely on the high end of nursing though. They probably on average make $20-$30 an hour. So you're coming to our wonderful country this fall?

Or, tip the person who washes & dries your hair in a salon... I remember working a 7 hour busy shift in a salon and I only had $20 in tips because people kept leaving without tipping me... don't assume the hair stylist is tipping the assistant... that doesn't always happen. I really relied on the tips cause the hourly rate was low. I'm still perplexed by the whole tipping thing, but after 5 years, it's just second nature now.

I'm a contractor at an energy trading company. it is being sold and the state of the business is up in the air. All contractors expect myself have been let go. This comes after 14 months of being strung along in thinking I would be hired, while in the pipeline, TPTB of the company have been thinking about selling it, hence the job freeze.

I'm still here, but morale is low and I'm sending out resumes. It's bleak, but nothing's impossible. I have experience and a degree, so, every little thing helps. :|

man, sorry to hear that.... :(
you definitely have the right attitude tho, good luck!

our firm is on very solid ground, it's many of our clients who are not. thus, we are belt-tightening to weather the storm as it goes. it does seem, thankfully, that the powers that be DO want to maintain staff levels, actually are still hiring, albeit not as agressively in the past. since we are still doing well, overall, even with cutting fees and the like...it seems we're just triming the fat of excessive spending which is a good thing, period....cut wasteful practices.....and it seems the partners are focused on the long-term, when things turn-around in the industries we support...that we will be well-prepared, well-staffed....and profits will once again go on the upswing. i appreciate the cautious optimism, i just hope salaries/hours don't get touched in the interim....

    *fingers crossed*

thank you, what I have realized is that having a positive but realistic attitude is productive and can help you in the long run. I don't have time for woe is me crap, this shit is real and in all my working adult life, I have never seen the employment outlook so bleak. Good luck to you too.
