    government worker.

our department and all our posts are required by statutory law.

so i feel safe... but i worry about other members of my family... but they've not been affected so far.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

I still have my job so it's all good. I do worry though because I work for a nonprofit that relies on a lot of funding by the State.

As a business owner I always have to be concerned, but my product isn't too expensive (fitness center) and I'm not so big that I can't maintain a personal connection with the customers. I keep my overhead low and work hard to create a positive experience and excellent class for my customers, so I have been fortunate in keeping just about all of my customers. Working extra hard to do it though.

we're still opening new stores...which is good!! but we're being cautious and not having merit increases with our reviews this year. there's still the opportunity for bonuses which is good...and quite a reward for those who are able to make the sales to receive it!!

and...they're paying to move me out to seattle soon :D:D best news EVER!!

Mine is actually really good. Our company is still expanding on schedule, and I got a huge raise right after the recession started. On top of that, a hefty bonus came my way in February. I cross my fingers every day that things stay as good as they are.

Right now, most tv stations are not hiring. Sucks, but that's the reality for now atleast. I'm giving it another year in Reno (starting the job hunt in Dec.).

More layoffs today. As of June 12th,the tv station that I work at will have an automated master controll, so 4 people got the ax today. That's 7 so far (3 from sales a few months back). There is a meeting today to "talk" about budget cutting methods. Still worried about my job. The reporter that I work with is leaving the end of May, and my shift is up in the air (I'm a newsphotographer).Kinda worried, but shit happenes.....

Little off topic but I actually thought about making that switch( I was a photojournalist for newspapers etc..) until a few years ago and was getting a little bored with still photos. I looked at the market back then and I thought it was to saturated plus I wasn't willing to pickup and move across country for a job. How is that market holding up overall these days? If you lose(lets hope you don't) your job do you think you will be able to find another? I know in the PJ filed is was damn near impossible to find a staff job or anything. Do you think you will move to another city/town for employment?

Update on what happened at my work place on Tuesday. Well I won't be getting my yearly raise on my anniversary date and a 1.5% pay cut (I won't bitch about that b/c I've seen worse pay cuts with other people on the pit) and I'll be paying more for my insurance. And they've also cut the matching 401k bennifits too, but I saw that one comming.
There will be an update in June, but I think it will be worse then. I think the next step will be unpaid week off furlows for people. Oh well, I'm moving into a smaller apt. (still nice, but I'm saving about $300 a month). I'm just going to keep on going.........

Gone from really busy to very quiet in the last 2 weeks for me personally.
Down to 10 emails in my inbox as opposed to 50 or so.
And the workshop fitters are left with no work, not looking good.

Pretty tough situation here. They laid off 15% of employees in november/december 08.
Last month, they asked us to work 80% of the time (of course with a 20% pay cut). I have until saturday to agree with this pay cut. And two days ago they announced they will lay off 10% more ...

I work at my family's new auto dealership. I've been working here for a couple years seeing if I want to take it over or not. I moved to Chicago after college but came back because I didn't feel like I gave it a fair shot. So here I am. I have great job security- where I basically am untouchable. The only problem is with the big wigs at GM. We are a Chevrolet dealer and normally sell about 25-35 new cars a month. We are steady and only off last year's pace by 4 cars YTD- which is actually remarkable. We run a solid business (which is paid off thank god) and employ 35 people. However, if GM goes bankrupt- they could just say that they don't need us anymore and pull our franchise. It's really scary for me because I have no idea what I want to do. I'm 25 and feel like I'm 45 and can't do anything else. I know I can, but I feel trapped. I don't know how my skills would translate to another job. I have a degree and all that, but I still worry I wouldn't be able to find something. I don't know if I want to stay in Ohio or move elsewhere. I have trouble sleeping at night just thinking about it. I see my friends advancing in their careers and I get worried that I will be thrown to the side left to start over with no direction in my life. I also feel that I could be worrying for no reason. I'm still not sold on whether this is what I want to do when I get older, but I want the decision to be mine, and not someone in Detroit/Washington's

I just got hired at the local University to a tenure track position during a statewide hiring freeze, so I got major lucky. My wife is a speech pathologist at a nearby hospital so, it seems finally at 30 and 28, we are a solid two-job family. The nice thing is that, while the jobs aren't as lucrative as working in corporate America, they are two that stand on firm ground once you get in. Good luck to everyone struggling to get in, I spent 12 years going to college with little to no pay so I feel your pain.

So far so good. I’m technically in health care – work for the Red Cross and there is always a need for blood donations, so I’m pretty confident.

And quite thankful that I am gainfully employed. Don’t take that for granted one bit.
    I hear ya....

only a short time ago i would read on these boards .....statements like...

"i can go get a job anywhere"
"my company would never let me go"
    "my company needs me"
"i dont care if i get fired, i will have no problem finding a job"
"the best thing that happened was my company letting me go" (thats my personal favorite)

its funny how things change in a years time.........
It's strange cos, even though I'm in hard times at the mo, I'm still glad my company let me go... I just can't afford as much crap anymore but I've learned not to care and the creative side is coming out in me :D so at the mo it's still good... so yeh, almost a year on and it's still the best thing that ever happened to me  I was getting bored in Dublin... was starting to really HATE my job and fearing the long term health problems... we were working on excavating a landfill... the pages upon pages of potential biological diseases were pretty fucking scary  so if I were still there, I'd still be bored, I'd not appreciate the fact that I had a job yet I'd still be thinking I was safe and I would still be worried about long term health problems.

Oh that's horrible... hope he pulls through  I went in one morning with my last company and was wondering where my boss was... he'd got a brain tumour :( it was really really shit but he was a slave to the company (of his own choice... even the MD was ordering him to go home constantly... I'd FREQUENTLY come in in the morning to find him still there from the day before... this happened at least twice a week  so it wasn't a huge surprise that he had some health problems) but he was back at work a couple of months later :)
