The construction "game" where i live just about shut down,it had been getting slower for the last year and i was pleased and lucky to be in work over christmas.
There are signs that its improving now though, then again its maybe just because its the start of a new tax year :?:
I have been self-employed on/off for nearly 23years and this aint the first recession i,ve dealt with and hopefully i,ll be alive for the next one in ten years or so
On a seperate note,if you have un-employment insurance cover please check that it is gonna pay up,here is my tale.
I have cover for my mortgage payments, the insurers know that i,m self employed, its on my policy documents.
For me to claim i have to cease trading and have proof that i have stopped trading, guess what?? the only proof that they will accept is at the end of the tax year when i do my tax returns that i tick the box to say ceased trading!
Basically if you came out of work in may you would have to wait to the following april to claim!
We are fine though,i am working again,we can get by with the one(wife) wage,we are even gonna use the insurance payments towards our mortgage and pay it off sooner.
Good luck fellow jammers on the job front!! and check them insurance documents because we paid them for 14 years and they aint worth shit.
I've recently become a political cartoonist. Work has picked up of late as i believe some bigshots got dropped from the newspapers and that allowed me to undercut them regarding my fee... it's a dog eat dog world out there... which is why my cartoons have a penguin called Spanky in them... i dont like dogs.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.
that's awesome for you!
and not to say this applies to *you*......but just saying, longevity/loyalty with an employer doesn't always traslate to security. i know my husband has 22 years in, and it is NO guarantee at all. thousands have already lost their jobs in his particular branch of government, and more probably will. we both HOPE he won't be effected, but he is also keeping aware, and sure.....looking at other viable options. it is brutal out there, for certain! i am very happy to read of the many, such as yourself, doing well....secure....even thriving.....and i hope those hitting hard times move past the difficulties and find solid employment.

I've worked within the Mental Health and Addictions Services (part of a health authority) for just over 10 years. Last week they decided that my coworker and I will be moved to Health Records central location and do transcription there...no longer part of MHAS...All I said to our boss was "we better get one hell of a party before we go"...
So, the new job pays more, is closer to home, and has more vacation...but it's shift work and I am worried how that will affect my depression...
While I haven't actually lost my job, it's still really unsettling...I can certainly empathize with those who have lost their jobs...it sucks.
My brother lost his job at the local pulp mill...they shut it down and do not know when it will be up and running again. He's been here just over 20 years -- and there are a lot of guys very close to retirement who weren't offerd buy-outs because they only shut down the mill, not closed it...They all might go back to work in the fall...
The state is considering freezing wages as of July 1st and requiring 12 mandatory furlough days a year. I work for a state college and they're not certain if this pertains to us since we have our own board of trustees. That's still all being sorted out with the unions. Fortunatley my step increase slipped in under the wire and we just hired 2 new therapists, so I'm hoping I'm safe. I'm picking up some hours through a very busy private practice just in case though. Stress of any kind usually generates more business for me (provided people still have health insurance)! At this point I have too many clients to see and not enough time to see them.
"I need your strength for me to be strong...I need your love to feel loved"
I got a new one, but I hadn't heard anything since getting an email last week saying I'd get some paperwork in the next few days, so I'm a little nervous to say to the least.

got a notice on friday in the mail that i will now be paying up an additional 12% towards my health benefits. :? certainly not horrible news by any stretch, but coupled with flat salaries this year, ever rising costs of utilities, property taxes, groceries, etc.....it's just that much less in my pocket each month. considering how difficult it is to keep ANY $$$ in your pockets these days, just one more blow. eh well. worked a lot less OT this busy season as well - so less $$$. i am fine with the less $$$ overall - i hate working OT - but i just hope it doesn't negatively affects my employment at all. as of right now, i really don't think it will. spetember is the REAL busy season for us.....so that's my true barometer. i am just thankful to have my job and all the benefits - even if i have to pay a few bucks more for some of em - and i am glad i've picked up a good # of more responsibilities at work. definitely makes me feel more *needed* and in this climate, that's a really, really good feeling.....
meh, I had a party of 6 that tipped me $13 yesterday, so that didn't make me feel very good. It was pretty much a slow night overall.
perhaps if you're employer paid you a decent hourly rate then it wouldnt have mattered what they tipped.
you should be thankful they tipped $13... you dont know how bad their circumstances are either.
just highlights what a truly stupid system it is for you guys.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.
it just keeps getting better! :?
so now find out come june my monthly commutation costs will go up $50! insanity. as both my husband and i have the same commute, that's an extra $100 out of pocket expense, on top of everything else that has gotten out of hand cost-wise, basically everything, each month. it sucks.
also, employer is hinting that perhaps next year we will have more limited choices in regards to our healthplans. bleh. i can go back to my husband's coverage, but it was actually cheaper for both of us to have individual plans thru our own employers.
income remains flat more than likely.....but costs just keep going up and up! and sure, commutation is taken out of salary pretax, but an extra $50 each still wil hurt.
oh, and my husband's job may have a reorganization of tours, so he may well lose his current bid and lose his weekends off. :( that truly sucks b/c my hours are M-F, totlly inflexible....and that would mean that on a regular basis, no days off together. we had that for 6 months when i first started here 2 years ago, and yea...it sucked. our hours are already different due to his job, so we have only a few hours together daily as it is.....so if he loses his weekends off, we will have next to no time together. bad enough gettting squeezed financially, but i know most of us are....thankful to still be well-employed, yada, yada......but this truly cuts into quality of life. ugh. it sucks.
My situation is still pretty solid, but I have been doing the work of three people for months now, and decided a while back to stop asking for help...the last thing I need is competition for my job if we DO slow down...
One day youre thinking that maybe youre feeling better
And youre probably an ok person, if only you had a job...
Through the hollow tombs can see them
Through their mouths I can hear them praying for pain
But its only a game
Listen, man, I know
That things are really rough
And everybody gets you
And life is really tough
But I know that deep down inside
Theres a feeling that rides
All the way to the end
Thursday you sit in your room with the lights turned out
And you dont answer the door
Friday morning looks sunny and bright
Like its going to be a good day
And it would be if only you had a job
Time is on your side, youre young
Dont waste your time today

As a stay at home mom, my workload has remained steady and constant. I no more clear one stack of chores and two more magically appear! No cuts in my hours, as of yet. But then again, putting in overtime at this position has always been an unspoken expectation.
Hubby's business has stayed steady and strong. Only, HIS employer seems to hand out these strange rectangular green objects as a reward for his hard work.
In all seriousness, our family has been extremely fortunate. Best wishes and good thoughts to any and all who are finding these to be tough times. Sending positive vibes to everyone who feels uncertainty when it comes to job security and to those searching for work.
Very glad that I am employed... I was unemployed for 15 months and it was exceedingly rough (started my current position last September). I washed hair in salons and did just about anything I could to get by. I'm on a crazy strict budget cause I got into bucketloads of debt not working for so long and still having to pay NYC rent etc and very nearly moved back to Australia cause I couldn't hang on much longer. It was really depressing sending out literally hundreds of applications and resumes and not hearing back.
I feel somewhat secure, I'm kinda in a government position, but it's semi-reliant on industry support, so our belts are already fairly tight and may tighten a little more but we've got alot of cool initiatives planned. I really love my job and I get along great with my boss and I don't take any of it for granted.
Glaciers melting in the dead of night and the superstars sucked into the supermassive.
After no good news for months, suddenly I get two job offers at once  I accepted both of course but one was only part time and would have been a struggle financially so it was no competition.
Good luck to the rest of you though and if anyone wants tips or advice on cv's or interviews or any of that crap... feel free (one EASY tip I can give is to try to arrange an interview on a Friday... all my Friday interviews went really well... cos everyone's in a better mood).

Unfortunately any kind of recession has little effect on my line of work.
Well, fortunately me anyways... :(
