I've been a member of the fan club/message board for a long-ass time. A trend that I have seen around here is to shit on the most recent album and declare the previous far superior. When Binaural came out people were crapping all over it---everyone was longing for Yield. Then Riot Act came out, people were deciding what to make of it, then after some time passed Riot Act became the trendy album to shit on---Binaural was now a "masterpiece". Now people shit on Avocado and declare Riot Act superior. Does anyone else see this the way I'm describing. I think what we have is the old cliche---"the grass is always greener on the other side". Bottom line: they're all good; they're all different.

PS---when I use a word such as everyone, of course there is a degree of exageration. So if you feel your blood pressure going up while reading my post, just relax---everything will be ok.

Backspacer is ten times better than Avocado and I think most sane human beings would agree.

    i guess i'm not sane

    Maybe deaf? I kid.

    for sure half deaf.

still, song for song, avacado is the better record...imo of course.

you can rank them different, but know you are wrong. :P

I was kidding throughout this post. I hate "ranking" or pretending that music isn't a different experience for everyone.

I think backspacer was fresh and not forced. I saw the self titled record and Riot Act as forced and predictable.

I recently rediscovered it and I believe it has aged very well... and Inside Job is an epic closing song.

Sounds dated already and I have no idea why Jeff even attempted to play on this album.. You can't hear him ever.

The elephant in the room for the past ten years is why did someone cut off Jeff's amp?
Maybe the future O'Brien remixes / remasters will fix this problem. Jeff's best bass: No Code. Especially on Hail, Hail. Turn the low end up on your system and you'll hear what I'm talkin' about.

I listened to it a lot when it came out, but I rarely ever listen to it anymore. I don't think it's a bad album, and it's certainly better than Riot Act. I just never listen to it. Once in a while I'll play something like Parachutes or Life Wasted, but that's about it. I never understood why it was a self-titled album either? It definitely had a war theme going throughout the record and should have been given a proper title. Just my 2 cents.

this album dated 'somewhat' poorly for me, i remember listening to avocado on way to nola for jazzfest-10 and thought wtf happened? production was brick i.e. compressed and fewer of the songs stood out, sans marker in the sand, come back, inside job.

i wrestled w/that impression vs initial which were more positive and fk yes PJ has returned to rocking.

this is not a bad thing, albums that evolve-devolve can be most intriguing over course of time, see stones mid-70's albums...

top three for me. No Code. Avocado & Binaural all interchangeable.
  • It's definitely in my top 3 as well, possibly favorite even. I just really love a lot of the songs on there and it was the CD that came out shortly after I finally started to dive into this wonderful obsession. :ugeek: I always loved the band and their songs but the last 5 years or so have really ramped up my passion for them.
    Thank you, Pearl Jam.

I was so "FIRED UP" when Pearl Jam released this album(after the Riot Act disaster).....

but i was soon disappointed.....a few good songs but nothing spectacular....

this seems to sum it up for many (most?) people.

wws was ok, marker was ok, inside job is great.

but man, theres certainly some filler in there. i still havent got over that unemployable shania twain cover.
Yeh I've seen Pearl Jam, too. But I can't remember the dates.

Quite a bit better than Backspacer, not quite as good as Riot Act.

My rankings go something like this

    Ten-Binaural
    Riot Act
    S/T

    Backspacer

Been listening to the 2006 boots this month, which has rekindled my love for this album. The whole album is underrated.
