What do people think of "Avocado"

Still think it's the band's worst effort by a long shot.
Looking forward to the next one, hope it's a big improvement.0 -
One thing that I really dislike with Avocado and also how the songs are played live is Eddies vocals.
The choruses and stuff are, in lack of better knowledge of the english laungauge, growled andmuffled. It takes away energy from the lyrics and the songs, it sounds so constrained.
I dig when he "screams" like in Tremor Christ and other songs but here instead of forcing the words out it's like his holding them in. Hopefully someone will understand what I mean.
This is evident in WWS and Life Wasted for example, but pretty much anything that is suppose to be rock on the album. Therefore I think Come Back, Parachutes and Gone holds up better then the faster songs.
And he sings this way live to. So the songs sounds kind of boring and not to their full potentional (Accoruding to my subjective taste) on the live boots.
Anyone know what I mean? Eddie need to sing again, not scream in that constrained way."Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"0 -
The packaging of it was just the worst thing. Sony/J Records or whoever designed the width of the gatefold did a huge mistake. It was such a thin gatefold with the thick booklet inside all in the tight plastic wrapped around, so my records was really bent and warpy. Compare the thickness to the DITP vinyl gatefold package and you'll see the difference!
Please don't make the same mistake with the package of the new albums vinyl edition!Stockholm - 07/07/20120 -
I really like it. I switch back and forth, but right now one of my favorites."I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me. Guaranteed."
1996 Merriweather, MD; 1998 Camden, NJ; 2000 Camden, NJ; 2003 Camden, NJ; 2005 Philly, PA; 2006 Camden, NJ(nights 1 & 2); 2006 Arnhem, NED; 2008 Camden, NJ(nights 1 & 2), Washington DC, MSG(night 2) 2009 Philly Spectrum Shows(nights 1,2,3,4) 2010 Hartford,CT and MSG(night 2)

I listened to it quite a lot, in May 2006, and haven't listened to it since.0

Worst record in their catalogue by far. Unemployable and Parachutes are gems, Life Wasted and Severed Hand are pretty great - the rest is irredeemable dreck.
Horrendous artwork too. I'm shocked that someone didn't say "uh...you SURE you want an avocado on it?!" before it went to press. It's a huge disappointment from a band that has always placed such importance on beautiful packaging.0 -

QFT.
Album is great! One of their best.I Know All The Rules But The Rules Do Not Know Me.0 -
Their weakest album by a landslide. Everyone hated Riot Act, and loved Avocado, which I don't understand.0

I've been a member of the fan club/message board for a long-ass time. A trend that I have seen around here is to shit on the most recent album and declare the previous far superior. When Binaural came out people were crapping all over it---everyone was longing for Yield. Then Riot Act came out, people were deciding what to make of it, then after some time passed Riot Act became the trendy album to shit on---Binaural was now a "masterpiece". Now people shit on Avocado and declare Riot Act superior. Does anyone else see this the way I'm describing. I think what we have is the old cliche---"the grass is always greener on the other side". Bottom line: they're all good; they're all different.
PS---when I use a word such as everyone, of course there is a degree of exageration. So if you feel your blood pressure going up while reading my post, just relax---everything will be ok.0 -
I never realized how many fans were record producers. Maybe some of you can produce the next record so it will actually sound good. Can't wait for that.
What I really like about posts like these, debates on songs or albums, it the amazing difference in opinion when it comes to likes and dislikes. That alone shows me that this is a healthy band. I see s/t as a step in the right direction when it comes to an album. The previous two, while I love many of the songs live, didn't do it for me as a single work.0 -

Ditto.
But it needs to be remastered...like.......now!
And I’m no audio expert, I just know it can sound way better.Given to... wrote:I am the worse at remembering lyrics, and its kinda sad that the first lines that actually stuck in my head were about some dumb ass crustacean in an underwater nation...
lmao!

i see a lot you like to crank it. i think it sounds like total shit cranked up. it's a shame too because it's so high energy.*~Pearl Jam will be blasted from speakers until morale improves~*0 -
like riot act better, avacado is my least favorite pj album but still has some great songs.
they also take on a new life live in concert, almost like certain songs were only meant to be played live, kinda hard to explain!1998: Indy 2000: Indy, Cincy 2003: Lexington (m.e.o.), Cincy (cancelled),Indy 2004: Toledo 2005: Atlantic City 2 2006: Cleveland, Cincy 2008: Los Angeles1 (EV solo)-front row center!West Palm Beach-2nd row!, Tampa, Chicago 1&2-(EV solo) 2009: Nashville 1&2(EV solo) Memphis(EV solo) Chicago 1&20 -
I have a love/hate relationship with avocado. I find myself skipping when I listen to the CD in the car. But stick inside job on then put the rest of the album on shuffle, it gives it a whole new complexion. I think most of it's problems come in the ordering of the songs.
I cant believe people are bitching bout the packaging too, I think its genius; the avocado with the stone on the front, it empty on the back with the CD being the stone, its so perfect, the music is the centre, the core. PJ are our centres!Astoria '06

I've noticed the same thing! I'm kind've surprised each time I read a post where someone says they love Binaural or Riot Act. Not because they are horrible albums, but because I remember when they came out it seemed like they were almost universally bashed.2003: San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Seattle; 2005: Monterrey; 2006: Chicago 1 & 2, Grand Rapids, Cleveland, Detroit; 2008: West Palm Beach, Tampa; 2009: Austin, LA 3 & 4, San Diego; 2010: Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbus, Indianapolis; 2011: PJ20 1 & 2; 2012: Missoula; 2013: Dallas, Oklahoma City, Seattle; 2014: Tulsa; 2016: Columbia, New York City 1 & 2; 2018: London, Seattle 1 & 2; 2021: Ohana; 2022: Oklahoma City0 -

There's not a bad song on the album in my opinion. Maybe my opinion will change in another couple of years however.0

Sounds dated already and I have no idea why Jeff even attempted to play on this album.. You can't hear him ever.
The elephant in the room for the past ten years is why did someone cut off Jeff's amp?0 -

Backspacer is ten times better than Avocado and I think most sane human beings would agree.0 -
