Why, if it was so important that The O6 get back...didn't The Island require Walt to return?
We don't know why either way if it's important for Walt to get back at some point - plus we still have the rest of the season and next season to find out.
I have a feeling we're going to find out a lot next week when we see Locke off the island and who he visits the O6. I could be wrong but didn't Walt visit Hurley in the mental institution and say that Locke visited him. So maybe we'll see what Locke said to him too.

yeah he is on the show next week
SHHHHHHHHHHH...you're not supposed to say that. People get testy about spoilers.

I must disagree with the last few posters. I have found this season so far to be off the charts good. Season 1 good.
Lots of answers (The Rousseau epi was great)
Really great lines
New Mysteries
and after next weeks episode (they do need to fill in that hole), we can get down and dirty and see who really is who and what side everyone is on.
I agree ... I think this season has been as good as much of season 1 and 2 and the final 5 or 6 episodes of season 3.
I haven't been this excited for the episodes in a long time. I spent over an hour last night talking to a West Coast friend about the episode because we were both excited about how good it was and where its going next.
Agreed. This season has been incredible. Definitely more 'geeky', but in a good way. Definitely not your standard, mindless television show.

Which is EXACTLY why I like it!!! But, as I've said before...it's getting ridiculous!!! And I'm seriously annoyed with the inconsistencies.

I think a lot will be answered next week with the Locke episode, and then they will probably have ones with Kate, Sayid, Sun, and Hurley explaining why each decided to go back.
...got a mind full of questions and a teacher in my soul...
Why, if it was so important that The O6 get back...didn't The Island require Walt to return?
Maybe I'm completely off here, but this just popped in my head:
Ben moved the island (through space and time) to prevent Widmore from finding it, right? When he did that, I think the 06 were still there, in the vicinity at least.
To get the island back to the present time and stop the jumping (and making brain mush out of people), maybe everything has to be the way it was, including the 06 being on the island (or the vicinity). Walt wasn't there when it started time shifting, so he's not needed.
I have no idea though...just guessing.

Be patient...I think it'll work out. We were so used to getting answers recently, last night opened up so many more questions and holes. I think it'll work out. Remember the first few seasons, there were way more questions than answers. It gets frustrating, but have faith. (as Locke would say. )

And it REALLY don't make any sense to me...that if The Island is so damn picky about having everything and everyone back the way It wants it...why would it not demand Desmond back? Yeah yeah...Des has unfinished business...I get that. But The Island clearly requires CERTAIN people to be there...and he was one of them.
Desmond came by boat so his way back to the island would be different than theirs - at least that's what I think.
My only real question last night was why Ben was on the plane because he wasn't with them originally and might have made things "unpredictable" to quote Hawkins said.
Since John was replacing Jack's father, can't Ben be replacing John as the impaired person on the plane?
What if Ben replaces Sawyer on the plane? Who's a bigger con man than Ben?

Yes, but back then it was still follow-able.

Yeah...I think he's being manipulated into go back too.

And Jack having to get something from his father for Locke to have was really lame. If things don't improve that is a moment that could definitely be looked at as a "jump the shark" moment.
Yeah...I think he's being manipulated into go back too.
If that was the case, wouldn't they have tried a bit harder at the church...and wouldn't have let him leave so easily?
Maybe that is why Ben went to the Marina. Maybe he kidnapped Penny.
I think this is what happened, or he tried to , and Desmond got to him. I think desmond will go to the Island after Ben, But I think we are reading to much into Ben being on the plane.

True, true. 3-toed statues and 'Others' were easier to follow than time travel theory.
Actually, the more I think about this, the less complicated it seems.
Ben moved the island to escape from Widmore, sending it hurtling through time/space.
The 06, Desmond and the pilot escaped the Island bubble as it disappeared.
To get the island back to the correct place/time, and save everyone, the above people need to be back on the island to prevent some sort of time paradox.
The main questions brought up last night were what changed the minds of Hurley/Sayid/Kate, who are the new characters on the plane, what time period did they land in and why is Jin a Dharma dude?
