i like the fight though. depending on what they do in the next week, with everyone mostly healthy now, maybe they can at least make things interesting in september.

these past few days have definitely been pretty vintage phils...

Don't even bother with the standings. Getting back to .500 is the goal for now.

The one fun thing about this season is it's nostalgic. I remember as a kid (except for the mirage season of 1993) I'd read the paper in May thinking "Okay, 4.5 games back of Atlanta, need a win today" and by July I'd be like "Okay, 13 games back of .500, need a win today."

Exactly. If they someone get to .500 by the beginning of August, then I would say, yes, they have a legit shot at this thing.

    Cliff: Whatever!

    rationality is a beautiful thing.

glad minaya finally got hamels done. give him credit for doing the right thing (for once)

win streak is counterproductive since it's happening week of deadline.

and really, they couldn't have given up worley and brown for hanley ramirez??? or pence/prospect??

    aaaaaaaaand BOOM.

contract negotiations tend to come to fruition when a deadline looms people. especially for someone who knows how in-demand he will be in once the season ends. it's been funny watching people freak out over a, seemingly, hourly basis these last 4 months. ha.

congrats to cole. good job ruben (as unpopular with most fans as that is to say right now).

    :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

why is it funny to freak out over the best homegrown pitcher in franchise history potentially hitting free agency? same people freaked out when the playoff series went to game 5 last year...and you said same thing about 'freaking out' and that phils would be fine.

3 game win streak over a terrible team and the pom poms get dusted off. so weak, your arms must be exhausted

Give Amaro credit, Fixer. Do it. Come on, do it.

yes. he could have gotten this done for less money and years a while ago, but I am glad he got him signed. finally a contract minaya gives out that I'm on board with (to go with lee and doc).

he continues to read markets as well as vick reads defenses.

now trade pence, pierre, victorino, blanton, and anyone other position player on the roster

.....but it is possible for them to go 44-20 though....

    46-18 to win 90 games.

The way Doc is looking, not a chance in hell.

My thing is do you think he's A) injured and needs an offseason to put it back together, or B) he's declining? I'm thinking A because there's no way you can lose that much movement and velocity on your pitches in just 4-6 months. It's usually more of a gradual decline than that.

love the guy and hate to say it, but I'd guess A and B

Give him credit for letting Hamels hold him hostage? Amaro was practically held at gun point to give Cole as much as he wanted. And it's all Amaro's fault. If he wanted to cost control this roster, and Hamels specifically, then he should have overpaid him last year or the year before. And that overpaid contract would look like a bargain right now.

I'll give credit to Amaro on most of his trades, but not on his handling of finances and projecting this team any further than today.

um...exactly what trade are you gonna give him credit for?

Lee was a steal(and I'm still a fan of what Amaro did with trading Lee and then signing him back), Halladay was solid, Horst for Valdez has already paid off (though I get not having more depth in the infield), Wigginton trade was decent (gave up nothing and aren't paying half his salary this year - it's not his fault that he's been playing nearly everyday), Oswalt was a stud in the second half of 2010, Pence the same in 2011. These are just a handful off the top of my head. He really has been decent in trades, just not the whole finance/economics part of cost control in the long-term. But please, don't adress the part of my comments where we're talking strictly about the Hamels extension so you can ignore anything you have stated and only what I have.

Amaro's downfall hasn't been trades; it's been signing FA's and re-signing players when he should have been more shrewd.

I think you're looking too much at the short term results

the pence trade has potential to be among the worst in franchise history. singleton is an absolute stud

gose is already up in toronto too (I know he wasn't traded there directly...houston sent gose to TOR for brettt wallace...Anthopolus has done such a good job up there)...I liked the oswalt deal at the time but that trade didn't really work out. and the potential ramifacations will probably end up as a negative return for the phils.

baseball trade conclusions take longer to finalize than other sports. I think the phils will end up losing the oswalt trade. and the pence trade will end up being an unmitigated disaster.

all things considered...amaro gets a pass for landing le and halladay. I would make the doc trade 10 times outta 10. that was by far the best move of his tenure (which coincided with doc's subsequent extension...which was also great since he signed for below market value since he had family in dunedin, the jays ST home which is less than 5 miles from cwater). I feel like lee and doc both picked the phils and amaro gets too much credit for that. his handling of Lee 1 really hurt this organization. The ramifications are just being felt

so yeah, I think he sucks balls as a GM.
  • The FixerThe Fixer Posts: 12,837
Let's not start sucking each other's D just yet. They need to go like 9-1 over the next ten for me to say they have a legit shot at getting back in this.

yeah, it might help if they actually win a series vs a decent team first. then 20 other things need to happen and I'll get on board

I prefer to stay sane and hope they move any player not named hamels, lee, halladay. trade everyone else if at all possible...even chooch, who's a FA after next year. his value will never be higher and he's already 32. love him and utley but I'd shop the shit outta them (we all know that no one wants the big pear)

I think this about sums it up.

Based on this team's history, you can't count them out. But there's still a LONG way to go.

Dude, what do you know about Olt? Seriously. If there's a guy that has Dom Brown hype (limited playing time no higher than AA), it's Mike Olt. I'm not trading Lee for just one prospect.

But everyone else has gotta go - Pierre, Blanton, Vic, Pence. Those four. Actually, if they don't get something reasonable for Shane, then it's not a bad play to to keep him and offer him arbitration. But the other three should be traded ASAP. I know the same could be said for Pence, but he doesn't have close to the defensive skills of Shane and it'd be easier to get a decent return for Pence than for Victorino.

I know that he won't cost us 87 million for the next 3yrs. I know he's got 27 bombs and 80rbis this year. Hitting 290 with a 404 obp. I also know he's 23 and would be under team control for a long long time on the cheap. I also heard he's not the greatest fielder and has some injury's in the past. But this team needs to get young and having a potential 30hr guy at 3rd base is a good start.

As for the rest i agree competely. Blanton is getting interest from the Balt as well. Fire Charlie get young sign Bourn and bring up Brown.

Yeah...and Dom Brown did all of those things up till AA. Olt hasn't even played in AAA, and I know some prospects make a leap from AA to MLB, but I'm not making an irrational move of trading a top of the rotation starter for just one prospect that hasn't seen the light of day above AA ball.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee is "in play in trade talks."
Olney calls the Rangers "the most logical landing spot" and says third base prospect Mike Olt could serve as a possible centerpiece. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman heard over the weekend that Lee is unlikely to be dealt at this year's deadline, but the Phillies just got swept by the Braves and may be more willing to sell off some pieces than they once were. Hunter Pence is also being shopped

Brown never had those power numbers. But i agree it's a risk. But it's one that needs to be taken for the future of this team imo.
