    HIRE RYNO!!!!!

Charlie Manuel‘s in-game strategy reared its ugly head again, calling for several more bunts and opting to pinch hit Laynce Nix for an otherwise effective Vance Worley in the top of the seventh inning. To that point, the only damage against Worley was a Pedro Alvarez solo home run; Vanimal had struck out five and walked one in his six innings. Nix grounded out, but Pierre salvaged the inning with a two-run single to right field. Michael Stutes replaced Worley and promptly gave the two runs back to the Pirates.

Kyle Kendrick, rather than David Herndon or Antonio Bastardo, came on to pitch the eighth inning. He quickly surrendered a lead-off single to Andrew McCutchen before retiring Neil Walker and exiting the game. Bastardo came in to face the left-handed Nate McLouth, but McLouth was replaced by right-hander Yamaico Navarro, who promptly drew a walk. It looked like Bastardo would end the threat, striking out Clint Barmes, but Matt Hagues hit a game-tying, two-out single to left. Bastardo struck out Michael McKenry to end the inning.

The Phillies went down in order in the top of the ninth, so Manuel sent Herndon to the mound in the bottom of the ninth with the score 4-4. While that is somewhat defensible, Jonathan Papelbon still should have been warming up throughout the inning. He never did. Herndon allowed a lead-off double to Casey McGehee, who promptly moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Presley. Herndon managed to strike Jose Tabata out, bringing up McCutchen.

There was no reason to pitch to McCutchen. He is easily the Pirates’ best hitter and Walker was behind him in the #4 spot. Despite his batting order position, Walker is a significantly weaker hitter, finishing 38 points behind McCutchen in wOBA last year. Manuel chose not to put up his four fingers for the intentional walk, and Herndon went to work going after McCutchen. On the eighth pitch of the at-bat, McCutchen smoked a sinker to deep center field to win the game 5-4.

Charlie is clearly having trouble managing this roster, not knowing or utilizing the various strengths & weaknesses of his players. Also, the refusal to use Papelbon on the road in tie games is infuriating, even if this ridiculous behavior is ingrained throughout baseball. He DIDN'T need Papelbon in the first game, with Halladay cruising. He DID need him in the LAST 2 GAMES, but didn't use him because of the asinine save situation bullshit. I fucking hate the save. ARRGH. And yeah, pitching to McCutchen is absurd; he's the only good player on the team.

The play at 1B so far is making Ryan Howard look like Keith Hernandez.

Galvis is way overmatched. Can we get Iguchi back?

Like i said last year take Howard out this lineup and were screwed. And Manuel has been beyond brutal besides starting Mayberry over Pierre in the 1st game.

well, if you replace howard with mayberry, wigginton, thome or nix of course the lineup is screwed. you would hope that the GM would recognize this

Also, the lineup with howard sucked in the playoffs too. It's not like he is going to solve all of their problems

THis team is in trouble in 2012. Tough to win when half of your position players are poop and the decent half are in full on regression.

    Gonna be an interesting year

Yeah, not a good combination to win games

    :(

No real way to turn this thing around with an un-healthy Chase and Howard not being nearly 100% when he comes back

Not gonna happen. Problem with the way the roster is constructed for 2012 is that there really isn't anywhere to put a trade acquisition. LF is really the only spot and you don't trade a stud SP for a LFer.

I'd trade worley or kendrick in a heartbeat, but I don't think either brings much in return

ahh i love the philly fan base. only in philly do we fully expect a poor start and a lousy offense...and yet full scale panic sets in when we get off to a poor start with a lousy offense.

relax people. it's a loooonnnngggg season. the pitching will even it out in the long run. stay around .500 and make a run in the 2nd half. at least the dopes in the fan base will start to appeciate ryan howard.

yeah, everyone should be as knowledgeable as you. you have proven here time and again how stellar your baseball acumen is.

    you are a gem

this team needs a lot more than ryan howard. sure he's better than the crap they have been rolling out at 1B, but he's not solving all of this team's issues (the usual culprits...lineup, manager, bullpen).

Actually having howard back makes this lineup better in a hurry. Here's what i would do if and when he's back.
    Shane
    Polly
    JRoll
    Howard
    Pence
    Mayberry
    Chooch
    Galvis
    or
    Jroll
    polly
    Pence
    Howard
    Vict
    Mayberry
    Chooch
    Galvis'

show me one team in baseball that doesn't have issues or questions.

this is still the best starting rotation in baseball, and it's not really all that close. it's 4 games. relax. top 3 in rotation stay healthy it's still a playoff team. barring catastropic injuries to the rotation this team isn't going below 88-90 wins it will take to make at least a wild card birth. although i'd still bet phils win the division.

no assurance that howard is going to be productive when he does come back.

also, polanco should not be hitting higher than 7th in a decent lineup.

and manuel will continue to force feed us juan pierre, which doesn't help things

we'll see what happens. I'm not in full panic mode yet. It's just annoying...this team has had the same issues for 3 years now. rahter than fix them amaro has continued to compound them. and the manager is lost now that he doesn't have a team full of HR hitters and he actually has to manage a game.

their schedule is easy to start off the year. hopefully they can stay afloat until they get utley and howard back

That's the problem even with Howard this team couldn't hit

Plus the injury he's not himself

Polanco is done and Utley isn't far behind

    bingo.

you would think after the last 3 years that people would realize that howard isn't an elite player anymore. sure he's better than the crap they're currently running out there, but those expecting him to be a savior are kidding themselves. he's just not that good

they really need dom brown to get his shit together and get back on track in AAA. He's the kind of guy who could really help this team

sucks when your team falls behind 1-0 in the 2nd and you feel like the game is over.

On August 17,1957 CF Richie Ashburn of the Phillies hit fan Alice Roth twice with foul balls during the same at bat.
The first foul broke her nose, and then Ashburn lined a second ball into her as she was being carried off on a stretcher. :wtf:
