  • THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER

Not super-actiony. But didn’t remember it at all. And didn’t want to rewatch Die Hard 2 which also came out in -90.

The Last Boy Scout is asking you to watch it to fill your 1991 slot.
Easily my favorite stupid-buddy-action movie of the 90s.
He can do a little jig afterwards...

Watched Top Gun Maverick on a flight the other day.  Pretty much just an updated take on a cheesy 80s action movie.  How on earth did that get nominated for best picture?!?!?

The only real person in it was the star.  Great plot.  Not sure what you were expecting with this?

    Kurt Russell!
This is a classic. Almost like a B movie but I am always drawn in whenever it's on. Think I saw this in the theater too

Hmm. Jonatan Mostow. What type of a thriller is it? Can you compare it to some other film?

    SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL

Well executed, great looking and high production values. But the glue of thrills, actor's chemistry and charm isn't there. The movie could have have benefited from the roles of Jason Patrick and Sandra Bullock being reversed. Have her have to do the hero-stuff and have him be slapped around by Willem Defoe. As it is now, you are watching the whole movie with a big spotlight on a Keanu Reeves stand in, which only makes your heart grow fonder of Keanu. No matter how much Patrick runs around on a cruise ship bare-chested. And I mean, with Bullock getting $12 million to return, why not use her for something else than the damsel in distress.

Mostow did a good job with U-571 and T3, but I might be in the minority about this.

So, Breakdown. Best to watch without a trailer. If it’s a B movie, it’s a Grade A B-movie as I like to say.

Did a double feature last night with my son and I briefly described it to him and he said, “psychological thriller?”  It definitely is. Told him it’s a little Hitchcock in that it’s a normal Everyman kind of character who is no one special but gets pulled into something bigger. Russell is great. Character actor J. T. Walsh is in it, he’s great.

Some great practical stunts in it and great Arizona/Utah scenery. 90 minutes, and the world is not at stake (although Russell’s character’s world is definitely at stake). They don’t make these mid level budget thrillers much anymore. Least not this good.

And Kurt Russell! (Sorry, I grew up on John Carpenter/Russell movies).

  • Part 2 of last night’s double feature. Another good B movie. LL Cool J and his end credits song (“My hand is like a shark’s fist!”)

Actually Thomas Jane, Michael Rappaport, and LL are all great in this.

Maybe like Arlington Road or better comparison would be The River Wild?

Totally agree. Saw it in the theater and loved it.

Ill remember it for when I do thrillers. Planning on only watching 90s films this year.

Sort of overshadowed by a dodgy CGI effect or two. Bit I found it very effective.

  • Definitely some bad CGI, but a great shark movie.

Harlin! The Long Kiss Goodbye! Cliffhanger!

I didn’t see the pirate movie. Any good?

Have you seen Mindhunter wil Val Kilmer?

  • Definitely saw Dream Master back in the day. Not seen Mindhunters. Sounds interesting. I’ll check it out.

For a second, thought you were referring to Manhunter, Michael Mann, William Peterson, and the first movie appearance of Hannibal Lector. That’s a good one too.

Ronin's calling your name for that '98 slot. Maybe some cheesy Segal action for '91 or one of those Lethal Weapon flicks for '92.
    It's a hopeless situation...
  • Ronin! Those car chases are pretty good.
  • Under Siege, Super Cop, or Universal Soldier for ‘92.

But if you are allowing foreign films, my choice would be Hard Boiled, by John Woo with Chow Yun-Fat.

    Brian Cox > Anthony Hopkins

That’s a young Brian Cox! Being my hometown, it’s kinda funny watching the scene with Peterson’s character running down the spiral staircase in the “asylum.” They filmed at the High Museum of Art. Really works for that scene.
