thank you for saying they are at .500 when they have 0 overtime or shoot-out losses.

one of my biggest peaves about the "new" NHL is people who say a team is at .500 when their record is, for example, 16-16-3, with those 3 overtime or shoot-out losses. Fuck, it annoys me. They are really 16-19 fool.

actually its 3 xtra points so they would be 17 1/2-17 1/2 lol

think about it 2 ot losses really equals a win 2 points

    Clarkie Defends Downie !

    Flyers' Clarke approves Downie's actions
    Downie punches Blake

    TSN.ca Staff

More fuel was thrown on the fire regarding Steve Downie's sucker punch Wednesday, with Philadelphia Flyers Senior Vice President Bob Clarke holding the gas can.

Clarke, who selected Downie 29th overall in the 2005 Entry Draft, told TSN's Off The Record that he enjoyed watching the rookie forward go after Toronto Maple Leafs winger Jason Blake on Saturday.

"When he went after Blake, I loved it," Clarke told TSN.

Playing in just his fourth NHL game since serving a 20-game suspension for a pre-season hit on Ottawa's Dean McAmmond, Downie punched Blake in the face while the Leafs' winger was being held by an official.

"Blake was a guy who had no problem going out and saying (Downie) should be suspended for life or suspended for the year," he explained, referring to Blake's reaction last September to the McAmmond incident. "When you say something that stupid, why shouldn't this kid go after him for it?"

The punch left a large welt under Blake's left eye but there was no structural damage. Downie was fined by league disciplinarian Colin Campbell for the incident, but did not receive a suspension.

"The kid did what every hockey player should do," added the former Broad Street Bully. "If a player like Blake who's been around as long as he has wants to criticize a player then he has to go on the ice with him and suffer the consequences."

Clarke, who is no stranger to rough play from his glory days with the team in the 1970s, also defended Downie's hit on McAmmond last fall.

"My own personal feelings is that Colin Campbell overreacted," he said regarding the 20-game suspension.

"The hit that Downie threw on McAmmond was not a whole lot different than the hits we all admired, including myself - that Scott Stevens used to do on open ice. He hit lots of heads and hurt lots of people and we said it was great. What Downie did was, it looked like Colin Campbell took it personally, (thinking) 'I told these players they couldn't do that and he did so I'm going to get him.' To suspend him for 20 games is ridiculous. McAmmond was a veteran player who was skating and watching his pass and got nailed. Sorry for it, too bad he got hurt but it was his own fault as much as it was Downie's."

Richards and Timonen All-Stars.... nice. I didn't expect Timonen but Richards definitely deserves it.

One of the Bruins players (I want to say Thorton but don't think that is who it was) pulled a Downie and nailed Hamrlik while he was tied up by the refs last night. Funny!
    Oh no it was Thorton.

Curious to see if their is as big an uproar as when Downie did it ?

You would have thought Downie killed someone with the way the Leaf fans were reacting

How quickly they forget about having Tucker on their team

I think it was worse (as far as punching power goes) than the Downie incident.
Half the reason there was an uproar on Downie's part is because it's Downie.
The other half is that the Leafs are the Leafs. Someone splits their D (happens a few times a night) and Maurice is in an uproar over the 'dirty play' :p

Awesome for Richards he deserves it !

He has really carried this team

They were talking on another Flyers board about what to do with Upshall ??

He's an OK player but he's always hurt...maybe trade bait for another D man ?

Tucker threw a huge temper tantrum on the bench last night, it was frickin' hilarious.

It seems to happen at least once a game except usually the shot is a glancing blow or hits a shoulder. Downie just happened to catch Blake in the face. And Toronto seems to make a big deal out of everything that happens to their team. But quite quiet when they are the agressors. Didn't hear much about the hit from behind on the Coburn which wasn't pentalized, did you??

Honestly I wouldn't do anything with Upshall right now. The team looks pretty good and with the older players (Knuble, Kapanen) it will be good to have someone to give them a rest from time to time.

Yeah, good point he has a rep

He needs to control himself and he can be a really good player..he has 4pts in 3 games so far not bad for a rook

Some on their Message Board wanted Downie thrown out of the league ! That's how crazy they are

It was a good diversion for Leafs fans on how bad their team is !

    You'll get that anywhere though.
TSN's message board for the Habs/Bruins game last night has about 50 posts saying what a great game by the Habs, and one in the middle saying how bad the refs were cause they missed all the hits from behind by the Habs on the Bruins. I saw two hits from behind, or questionable hit from behind at least, one for each team, but missed some of the game.
I did see Komisarek laying people out like crazy though.

I wish the kid could stay healthy

    He's got speed,grit,skill but he's always out

I still think they need another D-man even if they hold onto Upshall

Yeah but he could have played last night.. was a coaches decision.

I like the D right now... I like the pairings they can put out there as long as Smith can stay healthy and avoid flying pucks :D

Well let's see if Colin Campbell suspends Laraque or if he gets a pass because the hit was on Downie.

I think we'll see a suspension, but probably only 1 or 2 games.

Good way to finish the first half of the season. Only 1 bad loss (NJ) over the last 15 or so games. Hope they keep that momentum for the last 30 games.

Yeah, they've looked good recently. Some defensive lapses here and there and just trouble clearing the puck out of the zone at times, but all in all a nice 1st half. The PP has been on fire and hopefully should stay that way with Gagne back and healthy.
