They'll be boos and cheers... they realize what he was to that team last year but they still resent him for leaving.

Hopefully we'll be going for two in a row by then.

And I sure hope Simon gets more than a 25 game suspension.

Flyers trade forward Eager to Blackhawks for defenceman Vandermeer

    THE CANADIAN PRESS
    December 19, 2007
CHICAGO - The Chicago Blackhawks added some muscle Tuesday, acquiring bruising forward Ben Eager from the Philadelphia Flyers for defenceman Jim Vandermeer.

Eager, 23, had no points, a minus-8 rating and 62 penalty minutes for the Flyers this season. The six-foot-four, 225-pounder led the NHL with 233 penalty minutes last season, despite playing just 63 games.

"We wanted a high energy player for our fourth line and Ben is that kind of player," Blackhawks general manager Dale Tallon said in a statement. "He is just 23 years old, he can skate and he is a very gritty player."

Vandermeer, 27, had two goals, seven assists and 44 penalty minutes in 26 games with Chicago. He was originally signed as a free agent by Philadelphia in 2000, and spent parts of two seasons with the Flyers before being dealt to the Blackhawks in 2004.

Chicago will save money in the deal. Eager has two years and US$1.2 million remaining on his contract, while Vandermeer will earn $1.225 million this season. He's eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Adds a steady and somewhat quick defenseman in place of a tough guy which we have plenty of. Also it frees up some cap money next year since Vandermeer's contract expires after the season.

yeah, they are definitly surprising alot of people this year, especially on the road.

they really took off when they picked up Bryzgalov, he has given them # 1 goaltending, which they haven't had since the Bullin Wall was there

yeah a surprising road trip for them. Their goaltending has been stellar and they play a nice up pace game.

Again the Flyers are having problems with coverage in their own zone. It just drives me crazy.

yeah, it sure looks like the steal of the year, especially because they got him off waivers, but how far can it last. I wonder what his most GP are while in Anaheim.

like another poster said, they do play a nice up-tempo style of game, and they have a good hard-nosed Canadian as a captain.

plus, they have Jovonovski on D, who is still a very effective defenceman, even though it seems he has gone into obscurity since leaving Vancouver

guess all those pundits who thought Gretzky was on the hot seat and would be fired this year, going into the season, were wrong

thank you for saying they are at .500 when they have 0 overtime or shoot-out losses.

one of my biggest peaves about the "new" NHL is people who say a team is at .500 when their record is, for example, 16-16-3, with those 3 overtime or shoot-out losses. Fuck, it annoys me. They are really 16-19 fool.

actually its 3 xtra points so they would be 17 1/2-17 1/2 lol

think about it 2 ot losses really equals a win 2 points

    Clarkie Defends Downie !

    Flyers' Clarke approves Downie's actions
    Downie punches Blake

More fuel was thrown on the fire regarding Steve Downie's sucker punch Wednesday, with Philadelphia Flyers Senior Vice President Bob Clarke holding the gas can.

Clarke, who selected Downie 29th overall in the 2005 Entry Draft, told TSN's Off The Record that he enjoyed watching the rookie forward go after Toronto Maple Leafs winger Jason Blake on Saturday.

"When he went after Blake, I loved it," Clarke told TSN.

Playing in just his fourth NHL game since serving a 20-game suspension for a pre-season hit on Ottawa's Dean McAmmond, Downie punched Blake in the face while the Leafs' winger was being held by an official.

"Blake was a guy who had no problem going out and saying (Downie) should be suspended for life or suspended for the year," he explained, referring to Blake's reaction last September to the McAmmond incident. "When you say something that stupid, why shouldn't this kid go after him for it?"

The punch left a large welt under Blake's left eye but there was no structural damage. Downie was fined by league disciplinarian Colin Campbell for the incident, but did not receive a suspension.

"The kid did what every hockey player should do," added the former Broad Street Bully. "If a player like Blake who's been around as long as he has wants to criticize a player then he has to go on the ice with him and suffer the consequences."

Clarke, who is no stranger to rough play from his glory days with the team in the 1970s, also defended Downie's hit on McAmmond last fall.

"My own personal feelings is that Colin Campbell overreacted," he said regarding the 20-game suspension.

"The hit that Downie threw on McAmmond was not a whole lot different than the hits we all admired, including myself - that Scott Stevens used to do on open ice. He hit lots of heads and hurt lots of people and we said it was great. What Downie did was, it looked like Colin Campbell took it personally, (thinking) 'I told these players they couldn't do that and he did so I'm going to get him.' To suspend him for 20 games is ridiculous. McAmmond was a veteran player who was skating and watching his pass and got nailed. Sorry for it, too bad he got hurt but it was his own fault as much as it was Downie's."

Richards and Timonen All-Stars.... nice. I didn't expect Timonen but Richards definitely deserves it.

One of the Bruins players (I want to say Thorton but don't think that is who it was) pulled a Downie and nailed Hamrlik while he was tied up by the refs last night. Funny!
    Oh no it was Thorton.

Curious to see if their is as big an uproar as when Downie did it ?

You would have thought Downie killed someone with the way the Leaf fans were reacting

How quickly they forget about having Tucker on their team

I think it was worse (as far as punching power goes) than the Downie incident.
Half the reason there was an uproar on Downie's part is because it's Downie.
The other half is that the Leafs are the Leafs. Someone splits their D (happens a few times a night) and Maurice is in an uproar over the 'dirty play' :p
