But - I work with the developmentally disabled, teaching fitness classes. They do gross things on occasion - some of them drool, have bathroom accidents, and its perfectly okay to tell them to wipe their mouth - I follow the lead of the staff who bring them over in what I tell or don't tell the clients to do. I have one lady who will just pick at her face and cause sores, so we keep reminding her to put her hands down.
I agree with one point the original poster made, which was people with unclean hands handling the buffet food at the buffet. I'm thinking of the clients I work with, and the staff that take them places would not permit that - they'd have everyone sit down and bring them their food. Sure people eat gross (not necessarily the developmentally disabled) and that can't be helped, but it would be the responsibility of accompanying staff members to ensure that normal social rules of cleanliness are respected. It is part of socializing the clients to function in society.
Great post! I've worked with disabled before in the past as well. Of course there is nothing wrong with the way some of them eat of behave, and of course you can bring them out in public. But NOBODY is excused for behaving the way the OP described. Just like little kids, whoever is in charge needs to take control of the situation.

It was just a fucking post on a fucking message board...who cares if "some" of you were offended......sometimes you people act as if you are all perfect angels, Give me a fucking break...so stupid!!

I'm only offended, walking past a posh London restaurant and seeing Oxbridge twats in posh suits guffawing over their overpriced, undercooked haute cuisine and planning their next snort with their necklaced sluts. Not by real people perceived to have a disability and just enjoying their food.

What about throwing said food, which you are also partaking in, all over the floor, handling it and putting it back, eating in the buffet line, etc etc. Sure, it's real people enjoying real food and really offending other real people and behaving really poorly. For real.

Is this a joke thread???
I seriously hope so.
You think the place is gross yet you eat there anyway? There is problem number one.
And to call out these unfortunate children is beyond horrible.

But... but... try travelling abroad? I dont see what the kids were doing wrong!? What offended you so much? The fact that they were using their dirty hands to gulp down food? What?
was someone in charge of taking care of these people? maybe i missed something.
its not their fault they were grossing people out, but it is somebody's fault. Somebody should have had responsibility for these peeps.
I think there were a couple teachers there. There was a hot chick sitting with two teens who were with the group. I guess she was either a teacher or the best looking bus driver ever. I saw one other adult at that table, but no more. Of course when I got to my table I ate like I was sitting in the prison cafeteria -- head down, no eye contact.

Excellent response. Some of these people are being WAY too high and mighty around here. If you wouldn't be grossed out by the OP's then you are f'n lying. He didn't point and make fun of them or complain or ask them to leave. He was just grossed out and wanted to discuss his experience. Some of you really need to get an f'n life.
And what's so crazy about someone feeling bad for them? They obviously don't know proper restaurant etiquette, whether they had never been taught it or their disability prevents them from acting properly. Either way it's a shame, because I'm sure they aren't meant to be disrespectful to others, they just can't help it.
There is NOTHING right with disrespecting other people in an eating establishment, putting your hands all over the food, throwing it on the floor, etc etc. I don't give a shit if you're special needs, elderly, a baby or a dog. It's gross. Period. You can't blame these kids if they are being unsupervised. Whoever brought them there is responsible, just as if you brought a busload of 5 year olds. You don't let them run amok if they are going to misbehave.
What the OP describes sounds gross, I would look on amazed and so would you, so get off your pedestals you lying s.o.b.'s.
No one disagrees that it was probably gross and that the kids were behaving inappropriately. You (and a few others) are missing the point.
But... but... try travelling abroad? I dont see what the kids were doing wrong!? What offended you so much? The fact that they were using their dirty hands to gulp down food? What?
Well, that's fine in places where it's acceptable. It isn't acceptable here, especially at a buffet.

What's the point? Anything goes? If some kid wants to sit at a table and consume food through their asshole, I don't care. I don't have to look at it and it doesn't touch me. If there's a kid with filthy fucking hands grabbing all over food at a buffet it's a different story. How do I know what this kid has on his hands? He or she could have written his or her name in shit on the bathroom walls for all I know. Yes, that's an exaggeration, but a finger slipping through toilet paper when wiping the ol' ass isn't. Tell me how that's fair to the other customers at that place? It's a public health concern. Feces isn't healthy to eat.

Using there hands on food he was there to consume, throwing food on the floor in an area where everyone walks, eating away from their tables, etc etc etc. Are people here being dense on purpose??? It's not a crime to find gross behavior gross and it's not horrible to wish people with special needs be supervised adequately so they do not hurt themselves or others or act inappropriately where they are not able to on their own.

Maybe you don't realize, MCKB, but buffets are the *epitome* of fine dining in some parts of the U.S...especially in southern Illinois.
I kid! I kid!
As soon as I typed that I knew i was going to get drilled. I just meant a lot of different people are exposed to the same food. There are no individual dishes. And no, southern Illinois isn't as culturally advanced as New Jersey.

The point is that the way in which you talked about these kids in your original post was insensitive and offensive, whether that was your intention or not. What you described was a pretty unsavory scene, but why did you feel the need to belittle the kids in the process?
You shouldn't be surprised that some people found your words to be a little crass.

Nope, that rhetoric doesn't work. Let's break it down dialectically. People have a right to be offended by supposedly able-minded, technically intelligent people behaving badly. What Isaiah Berlin would call their negative rights of freedoms are being encroached upon. However, people don't have a right to be offended by a vulnerable minority of society whose behaviour might be deemed clinically to be an aspect of their condition, or what used to be called retardation. The "able-minded" diner's right to dine against that of someone with a perceived disability is a "positive" right, or believed privilege. To censure the behaviour of one who perhaps doesn't, and furthermore can't, know better, is tantamount to snobby bullying. That's the reality of the situation.
It's funny what people will put up with, in the name of table etiquette, as long as someone is just different and not really from a marginalised minority. Remember the scene in Borat where he was forgiven for bringing his shit to the dinner table because he was deemed intelligent enough to be Americanised, but as soon as his guest, a black prostitute, turned up, the cops were called? It seems that with a lot of people, bad table manners by people who might be taught better is excused, but sharing a dining space with a "taboo" group is a horror.

No, the reality of the situation is that whoever was monitoring the people bused in should have made sure their behavior wasn't disruptive to the other diners. In fact, the establishment should have asked them to leave, and that would have been fully within their right. No offense, but I don't care who Isaiah Berlin is, nor what his opinions are. In no way would I look down on a 'special needs' person for the way they eat or what their 'perceived disability' is. But, when their behavior, whether controllable or not, is such that it creates a health hazard for the other diners, then it is rightly judged as inappropriate behavior. If they cannot control that behavior, then whoever is in control of their situation is responsible. In no way would I condone a confrontation or verbal assault on those patrons, but to simply say it was gross is no personal fault of the OP. Is it such a horrible thought?
It's funny what people will put up with, in the name of table etiquette, as long as someone is just different and not really from a marginalised minority. It wasn't just a 'black', she was a prostitute, and the guests had put up with enough up until then. That point is moot.
It's not that they are a taboo group, it's that they are messing with other peoples' food and making a health hazard by touching the food and throwing it on the floor. You people are making their 'specialness' an issue. No matter who they are, it is inappropriate behavior. Regardless of their mental faculties. If they can control it, they should. If they can't, whoever is in charge should be held accountable. End of story.
