I appreciate that the OP wasn't being intentionally mean but this thread is awful. Saying that you found it an unpleasant experience is fine if it's the truth. Calling a day out for special needs kids a "gross-out clusterfuck" is just unnecessary.

what did you expect from people with special needs?

it's people who are considered to be "normal" you should be grossed out by.

I guess I didn't read the thread very well, I thought they were "normal" people at a buffet, I'm grossed out easily by people in general!! ;)

it actually makes me wonder whether the OP actually understands Pearl Jam's music and most important their lyrics, because i wouldn't associate this kind of post with a Pearl Jam fan.

I didn't point at the kids, make fun of them, bitch at them, ask a manager to kick them out, or turn around and leave. I stayed there, ate with my head down and tried not to step on the floor pizza or bump into the chick eating at the pizza bar like it was a booth. I feel bad for kids with problems but it didn't make that shit any less gross. Not sure how that makes me ignorant HLF. In fact, since I was there and you weren't, I'd say you're the one who's ignorant about the scene was like despite my description.

You're exactly right.. I'm a firm believer in the social model of disability..

'Conditions' are only 'problems' because our culture views it that way, and our societal structure doesn't allow for them to be 'norms'.. Disabled people are made disabled by certain able-bodied people's world-views and ways of categorising people. Even the medical, psychiatric and therapeutic professions are run by able-bodied people who are categorising people based on small-minded assumptions about what 'normal' is or should be.

    Rant over. :)

Your first mistake? Going to a buffet at all. Seriously, think about it. Most buffets are just nasty places. :D

You did kind of feel the need to come on here and vent about this disgusting experience that you had to endure though, rather than just accepting that some people are different to you and are perhaps not aware or not able to act in the same way as you. I don't think anyone is telling you that it wasn't "gross", they're just expecting a little bit more understanding and less treating the people at the restaurant like freaks. HLF was not ignorant.

nope we are not ignorant in this situation, why can't you be understanding towards them? i'm sure people in here at some point in their lives came across wide range of people.

and thank god you didn't ask manager to kick them out! jee it was their day out.

Why would you feel bad for them? Were they in pain or being mis-treated in any way?

I don't think the OP's even understanding my usage of the word 'ignorant'.. This one's a non starter.

OK, point taken, but where the hell were the teachers? I think if I take three busloads of behavioral disorder or physically impaired kids to a restaurant I'm going to keep an eye on them, if for no other reason than to make sure they don't burn the shit out of themselves while they're reaching for slices under heat lamps. Keep it moving, kids, and wait until you get to your table to start eating.

    All very reasonable points.

Explain what you mean by ignorant. My understanding of the word is lacking knowledge or understanding. I know there are kids with behavioral, emotional and developmental disorders. I understand they don't deserve to be locked away. There was still some gross shit going on there, whether intentional or not.

You might've called me ignorant if I'd started a thread saying an Asian man was eating with his hands and using a piece of bread as a spoon and it grossed me the fuck out... No?
