Went to a Godfather's Pizza buffet today (which is gross enough on its own) and when I got in the place was just slammed busy. Looked out one of the windows and saw three little buses from the Brehm Academy, a special needs school here in Carbondale. Man, what a gross-out cluster fuck. Kids were just standing at the pizza bar hammering down slices. One girl with a mustache was standing right at the corner of the buffet eating pasta and putting pizza slices directly in her dirty hands. Pieces of pizza were all over the floor. Kids were putting Monkey Bread (these little cinnamon balls with icing) into their hands and sucking them down right at the buffet. I don't think I've ever seen more people chewing with their mouths open in one place. Ewwww! I feel bad for some of these kids, but the gross factor was at DEFCON 1. It reminded me of the special table in the high school cafeteria except it was impossible to look away because these guys and gals were everywhere. Luckily they left after about 20 minutes of me being there. BTW, I stuck around because I had a free buffet card and I walked. Yes, I know I suck for being grossed out by kids who have problems.

But - I work with the developmentally disabled, teaching fitness classes. They do gross things on occasion - some of them drool, have bathroom accidents, and its perfectly okay to tell them to wipe their mouth - I follow the lead of the staff who bring them over in what I tell or don't tell the clients to do. I have one lady who will just pick at her face and cause sores, so we keep reminding her to put her hands down.
I agree with one point the original poster made, which was people with unclean hands handling the buffet food at the buffet. I'm thinking of the clients I work with, and the staff that take them places would not permit that - they'd have everyone sit down and bring them their food. Sure people eat gross (not necessarily the developmentally disabled) and that can't be helped, but it would be the responsibility of accompanying staff members to ensure that normal social rules of cleanliness are respected. It is part of socializing the clients to function in society.
