Gross!

Went to a Godfather's Pizza buffet today (which is gross enough on its own) and when I got in the place was just slammed busy. Looked out one of the windows and saw three little buses from the Brehm Academy, a special needs school here in Carbondale. Man, what a gross-out cluster fuck. Kids were just standing at the pizza bar hammering down slices. One girl with a mustache was standing right at the corner of the buffet eating pasta and putting pizza slices directly in her dirty hands. Pieces of pizza were all over the floor. Kids were putting Monkey Bread (these little cinnamon balls with icing) into their hands and sucking them down right at the buffet. I don't think I've ever seen more people chewing with their mouths open in one place. Ewwww! I feel bad for some of these kids, but the gross factor was at DEFCON 1. It reminded me of the special table in the high school cafeteria except it was impossible to look away because these guys and gals were everywhere. Luckily they left after about 20 minutes of me being there. BTW, I stuck around because I had a free buffet card and I walked. Yes, I know I suck for being grossed out by kids who have problems.

I work for a disablities nonprofit and unfortunately sometimes due to poor motor skills people are messy and sloppy when they eat. I'm sure it was gross but Im sure they couldn't help it.

this isnt a kind post and I dont think your intentions may have been to be unkind.
Too far many people see the negatives and not the positives. Those kids probably had really good day, talked about it with their folks when they got home and will remember it for a long time.

Yep, I know some of these kids couldn't help it. It didn't make it less gross, though.

You're probably right about it being a big deal for the kids. Most of these kids have behavioral disorders and not motor skills problems. I feel bad for being grossed out, but damn, it was pretty gross.

dont feel bad. i would be grossed out too. a really good friend of mine that ive know for 22 years has a brother with a mental condition. i have talked to him about this very thing b4. it came up that i always used to take off around dinner time when we were kids. i told the truth, i have a weak stomach when it comes to food, and i love him and his brother, but the eating thing was just too much for me. he agreed, he said sometimes he cant eat in the same room. it all just depends i guess.

its not like you were making fun of them.

some people just cant handle it. i have trouble eating around some old people, and some kids that are not special needs kids. it can be gross, and hard to handle.
    Peace, Love.

    You're an idiot.

And why the fuck is everyone 'feeling bad' for these kids? Because they eat in a different way to you? They were just eating their lunch ffs, no sympathy needed.

Ignorant people rarely have bad intentions... they just need to grow up. :)

Yeah, I guess you can put it that way. Although I don't want to imply the author is ignorant. Maybe some bad judgement was used. :p

what did you expect from people with special needs?

it's people who are considered to be "normal" you should be grossed out by.

I appreciate that the OP wasn't being intentionally mean but this thread is awful. Saying that you found it an unpleasant experience is fine if it's the truth. Calling a day out for special needs kids a "gross-out clusterfuck" is just unnecessary.

I guess I didn't read the thread very well, I thought they were "normal" people at a buffet, I'm grossed out easily by people in general!! ;)

it actually makes me wonder whether the OP actually understands Pearl Jam's music and most important their lyrics, because i wouldn't associate this kind of post with a Pearl Jam fan.

I didn't point at the kids, make fun of them, bitch at them, ask a manager to kick them out, or turn around and leave. I stayed there, ate with my head down and tried not to step on the floor pizza or bump into the chick eating at the pizza bar like it was a booth. I feel bad for kids with problems but it didn't make that shit any less gross. Not sure how that makes me ignorant HLF. In fact, since I was there and you weren't, I'd say you're the one who's ignorant about the scene was like despite my description.

You're exactly right.. I'm a firm believer in the social model of disability..

'Conditions' are only 'problems' because our culture views it that way, and our societal structure doesn't allow for them to be 'norms'.. Disabled people are made disabled by certain able-bodied people's world-views and ways of categorising people. Even the medical, psychiatric and therapeutic professions are run by able-bodied people who are categorising people based on small-minded assumptions about what 'normal' is or should be.

    Rant over. :)
