That's actually completely false. Manny does it at other ballparks as well, not just Fenway. I think other teams get the sense that he's having fun. A friend of mine (Cardinals fan) and I had the conversation this past weekend that he couldn't believe Manny doesn't get thrown at more often for showing up the pitcher. I am not justifying what he does because I wouldn't want Arod or anybody else doing it but I really think it's just part of Manny having a good time. Oh, by the way, here's some proof that Manny doesn't just do it at home.

I checked Yahoo and ESPN and it wasnt the lead story on either sites front sports page. Thought that was odd...?

His stuff was on last night. Gas in the mid to high 90's with a sick, sick curve. That combo is unhittable...obviously... :)

I was talking about on television, it led off their sports programming show. The Spurs could've been the lead but John Lester's performance stole the show.

Manny does his shennigans all over the place whether it's at home or away. It's whatever comes to his mind, I must say I loved it last week when he caught that ball and gave a fan some dap then tossed the ball back into the cutoff for a double play. :)

    Now that was awesome!

I found this interesting. Since Hellfish brought up Jeter and A Rod, since Manny joined the Sox in 2001 going into the season, he has been hit by 48 pitches. In the same time frame, Jeter 81 and A Rod 96.

I really think opposing fans more than pitchers are upset by Manny's theatrics or else he'd be thrown at a lot more.

That's what I tried to explain to my friend. It really pisses off the fans but the players seem to get that Manny isn't doing anything malicious. I'm not saying that they would be wrong to throw at him. There must be a feeling among other players that he's just having a good time. Those stats are very indicative. I would be willing to bet that players on other teams like Manny a whole lot better than Arod. Just a hunch.

Since A Rod became a Yankee in 2004 which also has signaled a switching of the fortunes of the two franchises ;), Manny has been hit by only 24 pitches, A Rod 55 including 21 times last year.

Btw, anyone else remember that Lester was supposed to be part of the deal that would have sent Manny to Texas for A Rod?

Not to mention that Joba has been called out by former Yankees for excessive celebration.

Anyways who cares. I love Manny. Boston loves Manny. You don't have to like him, like he says, if you don't wanna get shown up than beat him.

Also congratulations again to Jon Lester. Looks like patience and youth development pay off Hank.

So it's okay for manny to show people up because they can't beat him, but when the shoe is on the other foot, and soemone hits one off Boston,a nd admires it, Tommy Toughnuts Varitek wants to fight, in full body armor. You can't have it both ways

The funny thing is that one incident in which A Rod started jawing at Arroyo may have reversed the fortunes of these teams. Before that the Red Sox were always used to being kicked around by the Yanks. Since then times have been different in the rivalry.

P.S. Do you think catchers should not wear catching equipment?

Not really... the Sox had been throwing at Jeter for years up until that point. But the best thing was that Varitek told A Rod that they don't throw at .270 hitters.

I meant more psychologically than anything.

The Sox were trailing at the time of the fight, fell behind at one point 9-4 and then Bill Mueller, who 3 months later would have another big hit off of Rivera, hits a walkoff to win that game.

Going into that game the Sox had lost 4 in a row to the Yanks and were 9.5 games behind them. After that game, the team just gelled.

I think getting to Rivera later in that game was huge for sure, but one little dust-up looks much more important looking back, but probably didn't have that big of an impact.

I know there was something written in baseball prospectus about impacts of fights and the resultant effects thereafter. If I find the article when I get home tonight, I'll post it, but they had some stats backing up the impact of a fight involving a team gaining momentum.

I know there was something written in baseball prospectus about impacts of fights and the resultant effects thereafter. If I find the article when I get home tonight, I'll post it, but they had some stats backing up the impact of a fight involving a team gaining momentum.

HA! I love baseball prospectus!! :D

some would say he's enjoying the game, others would say he's showing up the other team when he hits a HR and stands in the box admiring his shot, and staring at the pitcher. My question to you, if you're a Red Sox fan, would you love it if ARod, or Jeter, or any Yankee hit a HR at Fenway, and stood in the box until the ball cleared the wall, and looked at the ball, then looked at the piutcher, then looked at the ball again, then the pitcher again, and then, finally started to trot?

The hypocrisy involved is the biggets problem I have with Manny. It's great when Manny does it, but if the other team does it, Tommy Toughnuts Varitek, in full body armor, wants to fight that guy. And all the drunken Sullies in Fenway would storm the field and try to stab any yankee who pulled that bullshit stunt

Anyway, very impressive by Jon Lester. I tip my cap to him. I'd be a bit more impressed if he did it against a major league team, but still very impressive, nonetheless

Dude, this is old. A-Rod watches his homers too, dont fool yourself. Sheffield did the same shit. Melky doing his circle dance or whatever the fuck it is when he hits his...etc...

They all do it. Its the game today. its not showmanship, it celebration. They are playing baseball for a living, not doing heart transplants. Its all silly to begin with. A bunch of men hitting and chasing after a ball. DOnt get me wrong, I love the game, but if you are going to get upset over celebration, remember what they are doing...playing.....a.......game.

Why do people care how an athlete celebrates? Seriously? If he took a dump on home plate after hitting the homer, that would be a bit over the top and deserving of criticism. He watches the ball. I would watch the fucking thing too if I could hit it 500 ft. Shit man, I watch a tennis all fly out of the local little league field when I hit it out with a whiffle ball bat. Its fun. Its just a game.

For the record, the Royals have a better record than the Yankees. If anyone deserves to be called a minor league team, look no farther than the cellar in the AL East.

Not to mention that Manny actually runs the bases very fast, and it has been pointed out before that a slow home run trot is just as bad as a pose.

Anyhow, I'll say it again. Boston has always had a NY complex, what's funny now is that the NY people sound like Boston fans circa 2000.

the whole complex thing is stupid.

its a winners and losers complex, not a NY and Boston thing. Its like saying chicago has a st. louis complex, or cleveland has a pittsburgh complex, or denver has an Oakland complex. a loser wants to be a winner, a loser hates a winner, and a winner wins all arguments because, quite simply, they are winning.

Yankee fans are bitter because their pitching sucks, the sox are probably going to run away with this thing, and the Yankees are not going to make the playoffs due to lack of pitching and heart.

bang, 2004, remember it. table is now turned. deal yankee fan. deal

I missed that earlier when he called the Royals a minor league team. I guess it must have been embarrassing earlier this year when the Yanks lost 2 out of 3 to that same minor league team that was no hit last night.
