yes. Both Yanks and Rays got better in the hitting department this year and their pitching will be right there. We can't be complacent with hoping our hitting will come through with what we have. Don't forget we lost Manny at the All-Star break and quite frankly that void was never fully filled (although Bay is a great addition). We need a Hanley/Tex type of hitter added to the lineup in my opinion.
The drop off from Manny to Bay wasn't that great last season:
Manny pretrade with the Sox .299/.398/.529 OPS .927
Bay posttrade with the Sox .293/.370/.527 OPS .897
Manny in 07 with the Sox .296/.388/.493 OPS .881
If Bay puts up the same numbers he did last year, the Sox should be ok. Plus it's a contract year for him. And if he doesn't Holliday should be on the market come trade deadline day.

adding Holliday? The A's just trade Houston Street to the Rockies for Holliday.
The owner of the A's stated he doesn't even want to trade Holiday in the stretch run ...
Wolff on Holliday: Wolff said he's inclined to keep outfielder Matt Holliday for the entire season, even if he becomes a free agent next November and leaves the A's.
"I'd rather take the two draft choices than lose him in the middle of the season," Wolff said.
How about Dunn? Dye? What was Saltatamecchia (sic?) stats w/Texas?
Dunn strikes out to much and he can't play center. That would be the only postition he would play with Bay and Drew. I think they'll give Bay a nice offer to stay. Dye is too old for their liking and Saltalamacia would cost them too much to get. Remember this team was one game from going to the World Series again and they were far from healthy in the post season. They've improved the bullpen and if either the Smoltz or Penny deals work out their pitching will be stacked. Baldelli will be a really good 4th outfielder. The only move that the Yankees made that I'm impressed with is the Texeira deal. Sabathia is good but doesn't scare me because the Sox have always done good against him and Burnett will end up hurt. I think the Pat Burell deal is excellent for the Rays.
The hitting is dependent on health, as it is with all teams. If Ortiz and Lowell come back healthy than I have no worries. Ellsbury will have a better year and Lowrie played with a wrist/hand injury for the last two months of the season. Sure the Yankees added Tex/Swisher, but they also lost Giambi and Abreu. The Sox also scored more runs per game after Ramirez left Boston. They will wait until the mid-season and then pick up a high caliber player because smaller market teams will be suffering due to the recession.
However the Rays added Burrell and Matt Joyce. They are the ones to be looking out for in 2009.

I don't tihnk they've lost one bit of excitement. Perhaps you've lost a hint of interest now that they've won it all?

I agree the excitement for the Sox is always there and what they have done in the last 5 years is utterly incrediblle and I believe it will continue. Just as long as the Yanks keeep A-Rod. I'll be visiting Fort Myers for the Opening Day of Spring Training and I can't wait.

I, for one, am not thrilled with the deal given to Varitek. I love the guy for what he's done in the past but he just can't get it done anymore. It was time to move on. Now that we've given him a deal with a 2nd year option we're stuck with him for a while longer.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

For 5 million I will take tek. The pitching staff clearly loves him and with the addition of Smoltz that will be a great enviornment for young pitchers to learn. I do think the drama was ridiculous though. If he had chosen to not accept the deal my opinion of him would have changed significantly. I for one am glad we didn't trade a young pitcher to Texas, but at the same time the pursuit of Joe Mauer in 2010 is going to be insane and the Yankees will be right there again. Can you say, the Texeira saga part II? Glad its all over and looking forward to the season beginning.

actually, I'd expect the Sox to continue looking into getting Saltalamacchia or Teagarten ... another reason to bring back Tek is to mentor one of these guys they get in a trade.
$5M for one year, and a Sox option for next year .... that's fine with me.

The just seem so reluctant to trade Clay for one of those guys. The organization is such a great evaluator of talent and they have put Clay up on a pedestal. Personally, I would like to see him get another shot and if they really need a catcher to trade for Montero. I like what the reliever Daniel Bard brings to the table (100mph fastball), but I think bullpen guys are much more expendable than starters. Michael Bowden can always come out of the bullpen if they need him to do so.
I hear you though, it would not surprise me at all if they are still looking for the catcher of the future.

Ortiz better not test positive now, but it is nice to have that feeling that his power may be legit. Its just so hard these days because everyone is under suspicion. Good for him for stepping up though, I totally agree that a longer ban should be in place for positive tests.

I know this thread won't really be active again until opening day but wanted to acknowledge the retirement of my favorite player growing up - Curt Schilling. I know a lot of people dislike him because of his mouth but he's greatest big game pitcher I ever saw and hopefully will be in the hall some day and I plan on going if he ever gets elected. Here's a good little article about him by Jayson Stark:
5. His almost no hitter in 2007 when he was pitching on guts and guile as his arm was shot against the A's.
4. The 2001 World Series against the Yanks
3. Striking out the first 5 Braves in Game 1 of the NLCS in 1993
2. The Bloody Sock game
1. Sitting 15 rows from first base with 5 college friends who were Yankee fans on Labor Day 1997 when Schilling shut down the defending champs and struck out 16. Schilling struck out Jeter 4 times that day and I think it's the only time that ever happened to Jeter.
I don't mind his mouth. In this era of the cliche-spewing athlete and player fraternization, it was refreshing to hear Schilling (and I'm a Yankee fan). He's definitely a hall of famer in my book though it would have been nice if Cashman would have been able to get it done with Arizona in the offseason following the 2003 season instead of Kevin Brown and Javier Vazquez.

The two possibilities are ...
a) Papi never did PEDs ... and he's pissed, and willing to put his neck on the line ... I love that!
b) he's on that list of 104 players and this is going to really suck in a month ro so when the rest of the names are released.
I'm betting heavily on "A" ... but, yeah, the way things are going, I won't be blindsided if "B" actually happens.
A sidenote .... was up in Tahoe this weekend ... went to the sports book and was a little shocked the Sox were the favorite to win it all at 5-1.
