Anyone have any updates on the Sox. Anything about Tito, since his back surgery? Anything besides death, burying ANYTHING????

From what I understand he has to have his knee replaced. He had it scoped a few weeks back. He's talking to doctors about what they can do for his back. That guy is a fucking mess.

Sox are seriously interested in Teixeria ... Mike Lowell hurt more than we all think? Sox driving up the price for other bidders?

I think they're just pissing in the pool. If they sign him there's no where to put him. They can't deal Lowell, won't deal Youk, and probably can't deal Ortiz. Those 3 are about $27 million right there and I don't see them eating any money because when/if they deal Lugo they'll be taking a big bite of that shit pie that is his contract.

again, how hurt is Lowell? That would be the only reason I think this would be of interest.

True. On the flip side how do you get rid of him and his contract without eating a shit load of it. The good thing about him being a Boras client is that there is no way he signs in the next 3-4 weeks. Hopefully you get a better idea of where Lowell is in his rehab.

by the way, I'm with you ... I think it's just to drive the price up .... would rather see them go after a stud pitcher

I agree 1000%. Pitching is the way to the promise land. I still think it they land a quality 3 or 4 they leave Masterson in the bully and (with the trade they just made) that bully will be one of the best in baseball.

Are we getting Lowe back? They better not get rid of Tek!!!!

Lowe ... not if he's looking for Barry Zito money ... no way the Sox would pony up that much for him.

from what I've read ... Tek isn't the first catcher the Sox are thinking of .... they are still trying to pry away one of the younger catchers from Texas.

Intestingly enough ... Tek and Mark Teixeria were at the Miami v G Tech game togethre last night ...

The Red Sox need a catcher. Texas has a bunch of catchers. Texas had Ramon Vasquez and Hank Blalock as their primary guys at 3rd base last year. Blalock is a free agent.

I could definitely see Lowell being traded to Texas in a deal for a catcher. The Sox just saved 5.75 mil by trading Crisp.

So if the Sox make a trade with Texas and pick up half Lowell's salary and then sign Teixeira for a deal about 20 mil their payroll would be exactly where it was last year.

With Coco leaving that's 5.75 gone, Timlin saves 2 mil as well, Manny saves you 12.5 mil (with Bay as a replacement) and Lowell being traded saves you 6 mil if you eat the other half.

What you would have in return is Bay, Teixeira, Ramon Ramirez and either Laird or Saltalamacchia plus probably a prospect of two.

Then the Sox would have 20 mil or so to play with to find a starting pitcher and some OF depth with the expiring contracts of Schilling, Tek and Cora.

The Sox payroll will be higher because of all the guys eligible for arbitration or deserving of raises (Paps, Youk, Lester and Pedroia) but not significantly.

ESPN reports, Sox offered Tek a 1 year deal ... no word on the $$$$ ....

Tek wanted something multi-year ... but, offering a multi year deal to a 37 year old catcher coming off one of his worst years offensively seems pretty daft ...

We'll see if Tek accepts or looks elsewhere ... maybe some team with some young pitching will want him for 2 years.

Am I the only one who feels it's time for Varitek to go elsewhere? His stats are horrible. Yes he can handle the pitching staff, but that doesn't make up for the huge hole in the lineup. I love the guy but his time as a productive offensive player is in the past.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

They are also close to signing a japanese pitcher. Supposedly he will be taking less guaranteed money to pitch for the sox. Takazawa is his name, or close to it, i believe.

Yeah, Junichi Tazawa. He probably won't help until a little down the line. From what I read after he signs he'll start the year in AA.

    Currently the rotation would be:

    Beckett
    Lester
    Dice K
    Wakefield
    Buchholz or Masterson

Which is why they're going to sign a starting pitcher.

No, other than the trade for Coco the sox haven't done much. I know they expressed interest in Burnett, but contract length and durability are concerns. Lowe is an option, but probably to expensive for his age. I definitely don't think they should impulsively sign a starter just to do so, they do have Clay and Masterson, as well as Michael Bowden. They also have a great reliever in the minors called Daniel Bard who can throw heat and could add so flexibility with the bullpen this year when he comes up.

Thanks cause it was no fun seeing the Sox go down in the playoffs. I meant to see them I got overwhelmed at work but saw them closer to Palm Beach.

I going to be there even if I go it alone, I could always stop at Lake Okeechobee and get some fishing in. :)

WOW! More and More women showing up as Red Sox fans like PJgurl awesome. My fiesty red headed lady will probably make the trip over with me I just HAVE to keep the beer away from her. Last time I had to keep her away from Manny as we luckly got down to where he was working out during the Opening game last year against the Phillies. She was loud but had a great time. :)

hmm, sounds like my lady ... should be an intersting bruins' game on friday ... ;)

hartamh, you should just find some boards like this for the sox, make some friends and go! Think of it like a PJ tour!

well, I went once, luckily it was in conjunction with a friend's wedding, so we had quite the crew there ... so, yeah, I think it's better with friends.

We were lucky in that, we were actually in Clearwater, but the Sox were AT the Phillies spring training site, so we got to see the Sox ... it was great.

I am hoping that my next baseball trip comes in July 2009 when Jim Rice's induction ceremony to the hall of fame takes place ... hopefully.

last time on the ballot, he's GOT to get in (was near 73% last year! so close!)

Hall of Fame ballots were sent out ... man, many of these guys had a short stint with the Red Sox ... (Henderson, Dawson, Lee Smith, Cone) and of course, two long time Sox in Mo Vaughn and Jim Rice.

    http://web.baseballhalloffame.org/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081201&content_id=10268&vkey=hof_news

Rickey Henderson will get in ... More than 95% at least ... there may be a few that keep him off due to his attitude, but, he's a 1st ballot hall of famer no doubt.

This BETTER be the year Jim Rice gets in!

    Announcement coming January 12th!

Where is Mo Vaughn?? I know he went to the Mets when he left Boston, but where is he now.. He's on The Hall of Fame list

Rice totally deserves to get in, but I can't say the same about Mo Vaughn. Great player in his prime, but definitely a product of the steroid era (not that he was alone of course)

I think the only criteria to make the HOF ballot is to have completed 10 full seasons in the majors. Then you only stay on the ballot if you receive at least 5% of the vote.

For example Brady Anderson was on the ballot last year. He got 0 votes and was dropped on this year's ballot.
