And Coco Crisp is gone, traded to Kansas City for a reliever. We did need the bullpen help, but I wonder if we could have acquired a better player.
The move opens up putting Masterson in the rotation which is where the Red Sox ideally see him and frees up about 5.5 million in payroll to make a run at either a bat or frontline starting pitcher.
Now your rotation is:
Beckett
Lester
????
Dice K
Masterson/Wakefield/Buchholz
Are you kidding me  he was a great outfielder
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE NEED PITCHING DAMMIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The move also makes it look like the Sox may make a serious run at Baldelli because he bats righty so he can spot Drew and Ellsbury and can play all three OF spots.
How's his batting average? We really do need pitching though. I really can't think of any good pitches that are available :(, but Theo's come through before, I just hope he does it again....
Looks like they are taking a serious look at Burnett. The brain-trust love him from his Florida days.

Ramirez was a really good set up man for the Royals last year:
In 74 games had a 2.64 era as a set up man, allowed only 12 of 52 inherited runners to score, 70 ks in 71 and 2/3 IP
His scouting report before last season said:
An aggressive righty with low-90s heat. His curveball is nasty and he adds a splitter. Tough on right-handed hitters.
Can be prone to giving up the longball, primarily because he can't change speeds and he occasionally leaves his heat up in the zone.
But he seems to have fixed his location problem as he only gave up 2 home runs all season.
If the Sox sign Burnett, Masterson stays in the pen. They're not going to rotate on the 5th starter. Wakefield will end up being the fifth starter because Bucholtz still needs to prove himself. This is all depending on if they sign another quality starter or not.

I don't like Burnett. He's only been healthy twice in the last 5 years and coincidentally they were his free agent walk years. I wouldn't want to be stuck with him for 5 years. He looks too much like the next Carl Pavano for my tastes.
Sorry I'm having a major brain fart , but who was the pitcher we had last year as a relief pitcher? He actually started some games also, he was an older guy. I just can't remember
The only guy who started and relieved last year was Masterson.
I think you're thinking of Tavarez in 2007. The Sox released him last year in mid season.
Thanks!! It's sounding good. I haven't heard anything on NESN or the regular news about anything.. *fingers are crossed*
Here's Peter Gammons' take on the deal:
Red Sox get power arm in exchange for Crisp
Wednesday, November 19, 2008 | Print Entry
A.J. Burnett interests the Red Sox. He has great stuff. Stuff that plays in October on a franchise for whom October is part of the expectation.
But while the Red Sox have talked to Burnett's agent Derek Braunecker, the price of a bidding war with the Yankees -- and Burnett may well get a four-year, $60 million deal -- may be too steep for a team that already has Josh Beckett, Jon Lester and Daisuke Matsuzaka in their primes.
So on Wednesday the Red Sox went in another direction, granting Coco Crisp his wish and trading him to Kansas City for Ramon Ramirez, a 27-year old power reliever who Boston feels can be a setup man and gives them the freedom to move Justin Masterson into the rotation if Terry Francona so chooses.
Ramirez had a 2.64 ERA for the Royals with a 70/31 strikeout/walk ratio in 71 2/3 innings in 2008. He also allowed only two home runs in those 71 2/3 innings, which according to the Elias Sports Bureau was the second lowest home run rate in the American League last season. Needless to say, teams are forever looking for high strikeout/low home run pitchers.
For his career, Ramirez has a 2.15 ERA in 105 innings outside of Coors Field (he pitched for the Rockies in 2006 and '07). He throws 93-95 mph with what the Red Sox believe is a power split and held right-handed batters to a .153 batting average and .455 OPS.
Crisp had a .392 OBP after the All-Star break last season, and played very well in a season in which he and Jacoby Ellsbury exchanged the roles of starter and extra man because of injuries to J.D. Drew and Manny Ramirez. He is one of the better defensive center fielders in the game and his .751 OPS in '08 and his stellar defensive play are upgrades for the Royals -- whose center fielders had an OPS of .638 last season.
The Red Sox surveyed what was a surprisingly small market for Crisp -- Cincinnati was the other club with the most interest -- and decided that with Jeremy Affeldt starting out the 2008 free agent market by signing a two-year, $8 million deal with the Giants that it likely will be easier to find another outfielder than to secure a low cost power reliever.
I don't like Burnett. He's only been healthy twice in the last 5 years and coincidentally they were his free agent walk years. I wouldn't want to be stuck with him for 5 years. He looks too much like the next Carl Pavano for my tastes.
Agreed. I just have that feeling that Masterson will be in the bully when all is said and done next year.
I'm just hoping that Lester is as great as he was last year, and Beckett is at his best also. If those two stay healthy and pitch really good and of course Dice K. is on his mark.. We are going to win alot of games I'm getting psyched already:)
I would love to go to some Spring Training games at Fort Meyers, I've never been to any:( GO RED SOX!!!!!
Lester will be better than this year and Beckett will be back and healthy. I think he was more hurt than he let on in the playoffs. Dice K needs to be more aggressive early in the count to cut down on the walks.
I like the move for Ramirez. Coco was good but we need bullpen help. I like the Baldelli possibility. We'll see what happens. I like Burnett but I am skeptical about his health.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

Where did Colon go??? Theo's been pretty smart about most things thus far
He quit the team when the Red Sox asked him to work in the bullpen in September to get ready for possibly using him in the playoffs as a long reliever.
I think it's a good deal for the Sox ... Elsbury better not go into some prolonged slump in '09 like he did at the end of the season. I tihnk this is a big vote of confidence for him.
Theo loves these high k/bb, k/ip pitchers ... if you looks at the more successful bullpens (San Diego and Anaheim come to mind) they are loaded with this types.
The thing I REALLY like about this deal ...
"Trading Crisp clears roughly $6 million in payroll this season, according to Epstein. The outfielder will earn $5.7 million in 2009, with a club option for 2010 for $8 million or a $500,000 buyout. "
Can I get an AMEN for the Sox not having to pay the end of someone's contract, for once???

Can I get an AMEN for the Sox not having to pay the end of someone's contract, for once???
I'm thrilled by that as well. Hopefully some gm can have a concussion so we can dump Lugo as well.
A couple of stats about Ramirez from the Globe:
He held righties to a .153 average, lowest in the AL and third-best in the majors among pitchers with at least 50 games. Only Chicago's Carlos Marmol (.103) and Philly's Brad Lidge (.105) were better.
Another key stat: In 2008, batters swung at 33.3 percent of his pitches outside the strike zone. Among AL relievers with more than 50 innings pitched, only Jonathan Papelbon (34.3 percent) and Mariano Rivera (36.3) had a better rate.
Amen:) I still can't believe how much it took to let Manny go last year:eek: Speaking of Manny, is he staying with the Dodgers or did he get traded??
Manny is a Free Agent, able to sign with any team.
The Dodgers made an offer, but, I think I read yesterday that they took it off the table.
Manny wanted more than 2 years, the Dodgers were thinking about giving it him a 3rd year, but not sure where that stands.
I did read yesterday that the Dodgers might make a run at CC Sabathia, which, in turn, might prompt the Giants(!) to make a run at Manny ... I'd love to see Manny around town ... he'd fit right in on Haight Street!

my only concern ... in 07 he only pitched 17 innings and last year, up to 71 ... when pitchers experience that much of a workload increase, it tends to lead to further injuries ....
although, from what I can see his injury in 07 had a lot to do with pitching in Colorado, in that, he was trying to hard to make his breaking pitches work there .... hopefully, he'll be fine.

He came up as a starter in the Yankees system and threw
101 IP in 03
132 IP in 04
141 1/3 in 05
Then he made the MLB roster as a fulltime reliever in 2006 and threw 67 and 2/3 IP.
In 07, he got hurt in August, but if you count his minor league innings he threw a total of 42 1/3 to that point so I think he'll be fine for a full season.
Put it this way - even if Masterson stays in the pen, we got a much better, younger version of Timlin.
Thanks for letting me know:) I miss Manny still, but the team and management can only take so much.. He's very entertaining, but he wanted out of Boston so the Manny being Manny is over. I wish him luck;)
As long as he doesn't join Damon with the Yankees.

Lester will be better than this year and Beckett will be back and healthy. I think he was more hurt than he let on in the playoffs. Dice K needs to be more aggressive early in the count to cut down on the walks.

He quit the team when the Red Sox asked him to work in the bullpen in September to get ready for possibly using him in the playoffs as a long reliever.
Colon said no, packed his bags and left the team.
the Sox then suspended him without pay.

"I don't believe in damn curses. Wake up the damn Bambino and have me face him. Maybe I'll drill him in the ass." --- Pedro Martinez
my only concern ... in 07 he only pitched 17 innings and last year, up to 71 ... when pitchers experience that much of a workload increase, it tends to lead to further injuries ....
although, from what I can see his injury in 07 had a lot to do with pitching in Colorado, in that, he was trying to hard to make his breaking pitches work there .... hopefully, he'll be fine.
"I don't believe in damn curses. Wake up the damn Bambino and have me face him. Maybe I'll drill him in the ass." --- Pedro Martinez
