disgraced is a bit harsh don't you think? they just didn't hit. in a short series that will kill you. they could have one games 1 and 3 with a bit better hitting. sucks to not win it all but hopefully with this nucleus they should be back.

I honestly didn't expect much. I figured the pitching would have blown their load trying to get there... but I was wrong, the hitting just wasn't there.

right, who would of thought their offense would be their true downfall :(

well, there's always the Red Sox (for me) and there's always next year :)

so when do you think we'll hear of Rowand signing with someone else?

I'm going to miss him, I would LOVE it if the Phils could manage to keep him, I just don't see how

Well, if they could trade Burrell, they could resign Rowand. Burrell's value went up during the 2nd half and his contract is only for one more year so he is more desirable.

Burrell won't allow himself to be traded. He's blocked it before and I surely couldn't see him allowing it in the final year of the contract unless there was a new deal in place with whoever he was traded to. Plus, for everything that Rowand gave you this year, I think it was a career year and not worth the $10-12 mil/per year for 3 years or more that the Phils will have to pay him. I don't see him sustaining the same numbers over the next few years.

yeah but Rowand is a free agent NOW, and I know some teams have already inquired about him so . . . we'll see

I don't want any of them to leave, but that's just the woman in me :D

I can see Burrell going to play with Jay Mike in Cleveland. Last year, he would only waive his no trade clause to be traded to Boston or the Yankees. I think this year, he'll be more reasonable because it's a contract year for him and he wants not to alienate anyone before he hits the market.

can you explain what the hell Pat was doing in game 3 on that fly ball? comes in for it and it's like 5 feet to the left of him - d'oh. then he is 5 feet away from hitting a go-ahead homer but just foul - typical. hopefully some team is dumb enough to want him so we can trade him. his big 2nd half this year still made him average. Of course I'd much rather have Pat than Bourn. I can't believe we might start this guy next year. ghost of Wes Chamberlin.

Charlie deserved if after what he did with this team this year. I figure he'll be out with Gillick or his bench coaches might be replaced with his future successor at that time by whomever becomes GM.

I just loved all the people crying that the Phils didn't wait to see what happens with Torre.. like Torre was ever coming to manage here.

From what I heard, a big sticking point was Rich Dubee. Manuel wanted him to stay and the Phils wanted a new pitching coach. That is why the renewal didn't happen during the season. Looks like so far Manuel is keeping his guy.

I can deal with Rich Dubee coming back, but not with Smith coming back. My 1 yr. old nephew could be a better 3rd base coach.

oh God, Wes Chamberlin, there's a blast from the past :)

Yeah Pat's handling of the fly ball was pretty ugly.

I'm happy Charlie is coming back, the players like him and that does matter

I could do without both Dubee and Smith though.
  • pjhawkspjhawks Posts: 12,430
well I think Charlie sucks as a manager but I understand bringing him back. Winning the division this year makes it hard to change now. It's going to be painful watching and listening to him next year as well.

Oh and as much as I dislike Charlie I don't have a problem with bringing in Lohse in Game 2 for Kendrick. Kendrick had nothing that day. Now using 3 players for one lineup change in game 1 (Dobbs pinch hit for Helms, Bourn pinch-run, Nunez into the game) was typical bone-headed Charlie.

I think this offseason is at a minimum better than last year's pickups (Helms, Garcia, and Barajas). I think adding Feliz will make up for the loss of Rowand's pop, and solidify 3B defensively.

It looks like Lohse could end up coming back here, I'd take him in the 5th spot in the rotation over Eaton.

Overall, I still say that we're the favorite for the NL East this year. However, if the Mets land Santana, that'll change things.

Now to find a taker for Helms.

Well hopefully Feliz improves on his .288 career on base percentage. He has 9 more walks over 4 full seasons, 123 total, than Pat Burrell had last season 114.

He is an upgrade defensively, but not a good offensive player.

Agreed that he's got to become more patient. However, he did have 20 Hrs last year hitting out in SF. That should translate to 30 at CBP. Still an upgrade at the position where we got no production from Helms/Nunez last year. I imagine Dobbs will get in against tough righties.

Honestly though, he's a better defensive player and a similar offensive player to the platoon who played 3rd last year. I think I can deal with him hitting late in the order as long as the fielding percentage stays high. Hopefully the pitching staff will be able to keep us out of slug-fests this year.

I hope you're right, but if you look at his splits - the last 4 years he's actually hit better at home than on the road so maybe he's just a pretty bad hitter who fields well, and hits a home run every 6 or 7 games while striking out a ton. That's still better than Helms though.
