Hope you're still enjoying that sweep, being 5 games back of the Mets as of Monday night.
The playoffs are on TBS this year. Tell your team 'cause it's the only October baseball they'll be seeing.

Well, with the Mets admittedly out of reach for the season, I'm hanging in for one last push for the wild card. 1.5 games back right now, and with the rest of the NL being so horrible, who knows, maybe we'll get lucky.
I'll still be taking the train up to Shea this weekend to return the favor to the Mets fans that were down here two weeks ago. I'll give Shea credit for still having $13 seats. Although, I know that'll change with the new stadium.
If only the Eagles had won this week, then I wouldn't be still thinking about baseball, at least Hockey preseason starts this week.
Here's hoping our bullpen can miraculously get us through the next 3 weeks.

What a beautiful weekend. Went up to Shea on Saturday, and had an awesome time. Got a free Mets bucket hat which my dog is now using as a chew toy. Had a Mets fan take a swing at me on the train, only to hit his head on the luggage rack and fall right back down in his seat. Proud to see so many Phils fans make the trip up to NY. Hopefully we can keep it going and not have a let down like after the last time we swept the Mets.
Too bad we didn't get to see Wagner pitch all weekend, oh, that's right, the Mets need to have the lead for us to see him.
And Shea Stadium makes the Vet look like paradise.
Go Phils! And let's go Birds tonight!

Its odd that Pat Gillick decides to announce this week that next year will be his last.
I don't think so. He just turned 70 and probably wants to retire. Plus when he traded Abreu last year, he said the Phillies were 2 seasons away so he probably wants to see his plan hopefully come to fruition.

I figure Gillick was probably good for one more year especially with his age. Hmmm wonder if that means good ole Charlie will be back for another season and then the new GM can bring in his own manager after next year....

That's what I'm thinking. Charlie is a free agent end of the year. I can see Gillick extending his contract a year and then if the Phils go a new direction, the new GM can bring his own guy in.
Exactly... especially given the way this team has played thru the injuries, I can see Charlie getting a 1 year extension and then a new GM and manager for the '09 season.

6 games to go. 5-1 will definitely get us in... 4-2 may work as well. Padres are fading fast. Mets got a rookie going tomorrow.
Maybe this is finally the year.
Its odd that Pat Gillick decides to announce this week that next year will be his last.
where and when did you Gillick announce he has only one more year?
if it is true it might have to do with the fact that Ruben Amaro is up for the Pirates GM job and the Phils want to keep around to take over for Gillick.

I heard it on KYW1060 on my way into work this morning. Gillick is gettin up there in age, I believe he's in his late 60s. The phils have been grooming Amaro for that position since the mid-90s as it is, so I imagine that is the direction they will go. Although, I would like them to bring someone from outside in... someone with enough guts to stand up to our "invisible owners" who only care about the bottom line.

It's the GM's job to work within the parameters the ownership establishes.. why would a GM come in and bad mouth the ownership??? unless he doesn't want to work in baseball ever again. If a GM didn't like the parameters he wouldn't take the job...

Good point. However, a GM can work and try and expand those parameters set forth by the owners.
The Phillies are never going to be a consistent powerhouse unless the current owners sell. The current owners won't sell because they're making money.
When our ownership defines a budget of $100-110mm, and we've got $25mm of that to work with in free agency to fill holes, and you have the opportunity to add 2 marquee free agents for $30mm, you would think a good GM would be able to convince the ownership to spend the extra $$. Unfortunately, Gillick decided to spend it on Garcia, Helms, and Barajas. Werth and Dobbs were good pick-ups, but Gillick lucked out on those two signings.
