hey, ceg started a whole thread for you! ...i was late, so i thought i would try to save some face in this thread...;):D
...and japanese in high school!? we didn't have that, although if we had i'd have probably taken it!
that she did! Which was so sweet ... made me feel all special! No face saving necessary on your part!
Unfortunately all that I can remember in Japanese is how to say my name, count to ten and some random nouns and verbs. Definitely not enough to understand commentary.
UFC Wired is on right now ... I just watched Karo Parisyan defeat Nick Thompson. Leben vs. Macdonald is up next.
Road Warrior coming home
Tuesday, March 11, 2008
THE CANADIAN PRESS
Jonathan Goulet is facing a handful in judo and jiu-jitsu black belt Kuniyoshi Hironaka at UFC 83. But the Quebec welterweight has already sorted out one thorny problem in deciding who gets his prized tickets for the sold-out mixed martial arts card at the Bell Centre on April 19.
None of his friends or family were able to buy tickets for the show. And Goulet only got four tickets from the UFC, meaning he had to pick from his girlfriend, mother, sister and three brothers.
"They all want to come and see me," he said.
Goulet, who trains in Montreal but lives some two hours away in Victoriaville, settled on his girlfriend, mother and two brothers. The winning brothers won out because they share a Montreal apartment where Goulet often crashes on the couch.
Ticket demand aside, the 170-pounder known as The Road Warrior (for his many solo bouts on the road) says he relishes the chance to fight at home. Where some see pressure, Goulet sees only encouragement.
"Every time I fight in Montreal or my home town Victoriaville, the crowd gives me so much energy," he said from Montreal. "They are unbelievable. I really like the crowd here and I'm going to be more powerful than in Vegas."
Goulet, whose record is 21-9 with one no-contest, came into the UFC on the strength of eight straight wins. That streak included a seven-second victory over Joey Brown, flattened by a rapid-fire Goulet knee to the head before he could break a sweat at the 2004 TKO card.
Goulet's scalps include Shonie Carter, Travis Galbraith and Tony Fryklund and Canadians John Alessio and Jeff Joslin.
He won his UFC debut over Jay Hieron in October 2005 but his career in the UFC since has been up and down with victories over Luke Cummo and Paul Georgieff interwined with losses to Duane Ludwig, Josh Koscheck and Dustin Hazelett.
"When he first came to the UFC, he looked awesome," UFC president Dana White told The Canadian Press. "This looked like a kid who was going to be the junior (Georges) St. Pierre. And he's come up short. And this is a tough fight for him. Hironaka is a very tough fight. He's a durable well-rounded guy who has fought some tough guys. So Goulet's going to really have to bring his `A" game.
"Hopefully for Goulet the home-town advantage and the excitement of being in Canada will catapult him to victory in this one."
Goulet, 28, has kept up a punishing pace since his UFC debut, running up a 5-1-1 record outside the organization in addition to his UFC outings. He fought eight times last year, going 5-2-1 (1-1 in the UFC). His 2007 campaign included an eight-second win over Travis Axworthy, courtesy of a wicked kick to the head, on the TKO circuit.
Goulet says, in hindsight, he fought too many times last year.
"This year I've really concentrated on training. In 2007, I got crazy with fighting but I didn't improve myself because I didn't take any break and any time to improve myself. I was always under pressure for a fight. "
This year, he plans to fight less -- something a new, more lucrative four-fight contract with the UFC should help with -- and train more.
Goulet says while we're only three months into 2008, there is already improvement thanks to a month spent training jiu-jitsu at the Gracie Barra academy in Rio de Janeiro. Goulet says while he spent a lot of time tapping out down there because the jiu-jitsu was so good, the trip helped his ground game.
He's also taken pride in praise from St. Pierre, whose fight with welterweight champion Matt Serra is atop the UFC 83 fight card. Goulet says St. Pierre has told him that he enjoys sparring with Goulet because his takedowns are so good and because he gives GSP trouble when he tries to take Goulet down.
Hironaka will test those talents. The 31-year-old Japanese fighter is 1-2 in the UFC (11-3 overall) but those two losses came to Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves, whose combined record in the UFC is 14-2 (with one of Alves' losses coming at the hands of Fitch).
"He's got some throws and he's got some submissions," White said, handicapping the Japanese fighter who also has wins over Nick Diaz and Renato Verissimo.
Better not blink when Goulet fights. Twenty-five of his 31 outings (including eight of his last nine) ended in the first round, sometimes with the Quebec native feeling the pain. Ludwig lived up to his nickname Bang when he knocked him out in 11 seconds in early 2006 and Hawaii's Kaipo Kalama KO'd Goulet in 12 seconds back in 2003.
More recently Hazelett submitted him via armbar in 74 seconds, forcing Goulet's elbow to pop out in the process.
"Yeah, that was painful," he said with a laugh.
Away from the cage, Goulet dreams about a career in acting -- he already has a few commercials under his belt -- and is thinking about a degree in video editing. Samples of his video work, mostly to do with fighting, are up on YouTube.
Goulet definitely isn't the shy sort, at least when it comes to his hair.
For his fight against Koscheck in August 2006, he had the words "For Rent" on his head, explained later he wanted to showcase a sponsor on his noggin. He once had M and R shaved in his head, to promote M&R Superstore electronics.
Against Hazelett, it was a kind of mohawk, with tribal relief on the side of his head.
Sometimes his hair looks like a jaunty beret, painted on one side of his head. Other times, his head is like a map of the Pacific Islands, with coloured hair shapes.
He only does it for fights, observing dryly: "I'm not walking around like that, when I'm taking my daughter to school. I'm not sure what the teacher would think about that."
For his most recent fight, a first-round submission win over Georgieff in December, he put "a sunshine" in his hair.
"That was to tell my friends that 2008 is going to be my year and it starts right now."
i didn't realize via rail still did this, but i just reserved my train for montreal just by giving my name over the phone! i'll have the $ to pick them up next week, but as ceg mentioned before the train on her side was selling out of good fares fast.
so i got the supersaver fare and just have to pick them up next week.
i'm booked over here for montreal! ...with just a little over one month to go. sweet!
just saw this "announcement" on proelite.com. i thought they may start broadcasting with the march 29th show, but i guess it looks like may.

Robbie Lawler Vs. Scott Smith - EliteXC MW Championship
Gina Carano Vs. Kaitlin Young
Murilo Rua Vs. Phil Baroni
Brett Rogers Vs. John Murphy
that's it! "heart of COLD" will be my theme song. i'll get a local band to make it sound nice and menacing. thanks, ceg. :)
i caught a bit of releashed tonight and they had the ads on for fight night, ufc 83, and the TUF 7 premiere. i can't wait for april! three hours for fight night and then the first few episodes of the series are supposedly going to feature the best of the 16 initial matches, as well as highlights from those that weren't as good.
the new concept is one i really like. this time we get to see what each competitor can do in a match and what their strengths and weaknesses are, instead of just hearing about it and seeing what they put into training. it also gives us a heck of a lot of fights to start off the season!
*Seeing PJ at Bonnaroo (hopefully with some fellow PJ & UFC fans )
.
i'm still hoping to go but everyone i know backed out, so i don't know if i can make it. It's a really long drive to make by yourself and with some of the rumours around the lolla lineup, i might be going there instead.

Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson Vs. Ruben Villareal??
What happened to Kimbo vs some real competition??
yeah, that's the name i've been reading the most, but things could change before the finalized card comes out. in any case, it will probably be kimbo vs. "insert journeyman fighter's name here".
on the last elitexc show, they insinuated that ken shamrock could be kimbo's next opponent, but i think that was contingent on a win in the last cage rage event. ken was knocked out by buzz berry, so then berry's name was rumoured too.
i have a feeling it will be a few fights before kimbo gets a real test, lbc. the only other HW of any significance that elitexc has is antonio silva and he's a potential (more likely probable ) loss for kimbo at this point, so i don't see them putting that one together anytime soon. for now, they'll probably keep signing free agent fighters to one fight deals for kimbo or they'll continue to borrow fighters from some of their affiliate organizations.
kimbo's ground game is supposedly pretty solid, but as long as they keep putting him up against guys who are simply willing to trade strikes with him on the feet, i guess we'll have to wait to see it.
just my thoughts...:D i'm more interested on who will be on the rest of the televised card...gina and silva of course! the lawler / smith match should be an entertaining stand up, slug it out fight too.
oh yeah, there's also speculation after don frye pulled out of the yamma pit fighting event that he may have been offered the fight with kimbo. i have a feeling that is just the internet nerds (like me ) starting that speculation.
