more positive tests are rumoured to be forthcoming from the affliction and elite xc shows. this one is particularly strange, as levens first weighed in over for his match against ray lizama at affliction, and the production then completely dropped the fight due to mistakes they made with time constraints and PPV time. so levens doesn't even have a fight and still tests positive...more positive tests to come from those two shows, names of the fightes involved have not yet been released...
LEVENS SUSPENDED AND FINED FOR POSITIVE TEST

Justin Levens, who was scheduled to fight Ray Lazama July 19 in the Affliction: "Banned" event, has been fined and suspended by the California State Athletic Commission for testing positive for the painkiller Oxymorphone.
Levens was fined $1000 of his $6000 fight purse and handed a six-month suspension that runs retroactively from July 19, 2008 through Jan. 15, 2009.
Levens' pre-fight sample came back positive, but the bout with Lazama was scrapped by the promotion due to time constraints after a delayed start when paramedics were late arriving at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
According to CSAC Assistant Executive Officer Bill Douglas, the nanogram cutoff for Oxymorhone is 120 ng/ml and Levens' sample tested at 10,141 ng/ml.
All 20 fighters scheduled to compete on the Affliction fight card were tested by the commission for drugs of abuse as well as steroids. The results of the steroid tests are still pending.
some very sad news in the aftermath of rampage's health issues...:(
VICTIM MISCARRIES FOLLOWING CRASH WITH RAMPAGE

The legal woes of former Ultimate Fighting Championship title holder, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson may have just taken a turn for the worse as a Huntington Beach woman who was involved in the hit and run crash with the fighter has miscarried her baby according to a report from the Daily Pilot newspaper.
According to the report on the newspaper’s website, Holly Griggs, 38, was driving her 2007 Cadillac Escalade in the left lane of the southbound 55 Freeway on July 15 when the former UFC champion sideswiped her as he was driving along the median.
Following the incident and further actions during the chase with Jackson, he was arrested and charged, but then released on $25,000 bail before being picked up again just days later and admitted to a mental health facility for treatment.
Prosecutors from the area have yet to file any further charges against the fighter at this time and could not comment to the Daily Pilot on any charges that would stem from Griggs’ miscarriage.
While Griggs has made no official statement, her fiancé and father to the baby, Bill Krebs spoke to reporters and while the couple have retained legal counsel they have yet to officially file any action against Jackson.
“No amount of money will bring back my son,” said Krebs to reporters following the incident.
Jackson, nor anyone close to the fighter, has yet to go on record with an official statement following the situation with the Griggs’ family.
in other mma rumours and news i'm getting caught up on...
- FIGHT! magazine article with roger huerta again brings up questions about UFC fighter pay, as huerta says he no longer does PR for UFC after being paid 50$ per day for doing it in montreal and england. he mentions keith jardine as an example of a fighter who is being taken advantage of inside the octagon by the UFC.
- affliction "fudges" some of their event numbers, first by buying 500,000$ worth of their own tickets to their first event to try to get a sellout, then by stating PPV numbers at 100,000 in sales, while PPV industry people claim the number is actually closer to being less than half of that.
- fedor's managment have backed out of a fight that was supposed to take place in the fall against andrei arlovski, citing another hand injury and possible surgery as the reason. (shocker! ) he may actually have an injury, though...we'll find out in a few years...
- affliction looking for their fighters to start taking pay cuts (again, shocker! ) as of next show. josh barnett was supposedly one asked and refused. rumours of a possible barnett vs. arlovski match have started and barnett issued a blog, mentioning that the rumours about him refusing a 50% pay cut were untrue.
- gina carano will face kelly kobald as expected in october, leaving some mma fans disgruntled about missing what they thought would be carano vs. cristiane santos (following cristiane's win over shayna baszler last saturday). this one is probably most shocking, as people are actually talking about women's mma and treating it in the same inane way they do men's mma.
- matt lindland vs. vitor belfort rumoured for next affliction event.
- DREAM possibly in the midst of losing their tv deal in japan due to very low tv ratings. DREAM 6 could be their last show if ratings do not improve and K-1 officials decide to end the production and possibly return to the K-1 Hero's format.

at one point, when talking about his childhood from nine years old and younger, he says, "...i can't see myself punching a kid in the face, abusing him - verbally, physically - at that age? i couldn't see myself doing that. i couldn't see...i couldn't...so fuck my real dad, fuck my real mom, fuck my fuckin' stepmom. seriously, how dare you!? how fucking dare you?!" :(

ok guys here's my picks so far. I've picked alot of decisions but i'm not confident about this card at all. The top 3 fights i'm really not sure of... I picked GSP by decision even though i really have a feeling that fitch is going to win the decision. I also picked Huerta by decision, but again, i have a very strong feeling Kenny is going to pull this out. I also went with brock by decision, but i'm really undecided about it. I have a feeling it's going to be a tko in the 2nd by brock, but i can also see hearing taking it by decision or tko. O well, things might change.
I will not be around for this card because i've decided to go to the APW festival in NJ to see 2 nights of radiohead. I also found out that eddie is playing on the thursday, so i'm trying to find a way to make it to that aswell. Anyways, enjoy the fights guys, here's my picks.
Georges St-Pierre v. Jon Fitch
Winner: Georges St-Pierre Unanimous Decision
Kenny Florian v. Roger Huerta

Ben Saunders v. Ryan Thomas

uhoh that is not good news for rampage... unfortunatly that will fall under manslaughter will it not?
My sympathies to the family
i'm not really sure. this will be a tough one for the courts to figure out, i'm sure. they'll have to prove that the miscarriage was a result of the collision, i guess. then, they'll have to figure out quinton's mental state at the time. i guess he'd been fasting for days and hadn't slept, drinking energy drinks to stay awake.
really, just a horrible sirtuation for all involved. as you said, leafs, sympathy to the family.
i'll have to check that out, i have no clue about roger's background so those comments are pretty hard. What did they do to him?
yeah, he had a pretty rough childhood. i'm sure the show will go into more detail, but from what i recall, he was abused by both his birth parents and then his father left him with relatives on his side of the family who also abused him and made him sell things to tourists to earn money for them. his dad picked him up again and brought him back with his stepmom, where he suffered more abuse and eventually they left him with an aunt. there was a lot of crime and gang activity in the area. from there...i'm not sure what happened, but somehow he ended up spending some time on the streets and then eventually made it to san antonio and got into a school. one of his teachers adopted him and he considers her his mom.
i'm sure i don't have all the facts straight...but his parents were involved with drugs and alcohol and abandoned him a couple of times (in a couple of different countries, as well). he suffered a lot, most of it, i thnk, by the age of nine!
anyway, i'm looking forward to hearing more about it on the countdown show. sorry if i don't have some of the facts straight, but i've heard bits and pieces here and there.
...and good luck on the picks leafs! sorry you'll be missing this one, but again you are off on an adventure! enjoy the shows, and good luck on the eddie show!!!
i agree, some of these matches are close...tough to call. draws all around, i say!
just saw this on TSN's site...they're looking at november or december of this year!
UFC Boss Hopes to Host Another Show in Montreal
The Canadian Press
8/5/2008
The UFC is looking to return to Canada later this year.
''I literally just left a meeting where we were talking about that,'' UFC president Dana White told The Canadian Press on Tuesday. ''We're looking to come back to Montreal.''
White said the mixed martial arts organization hopes to return in November or December.
The UFC made its Canadian debut April 19, drawing a loud and proud crowd of 21,390 at the Bell Centre to see Montreal's Georges St. Pierre reclaim his welterweight title from Matt Serra. The Canadian card was the UFC's biggest ever in terms of attendance, its fastest ever sellout, and produced a gate of some $5 million.
''The energy tonight was more powerful here than anywhere I've ever been. The fans were amazing,'' White said that night.
''Everybody delivered. It was a great night.''
Should St. Pierre dispose of top contender Jon Fitch in Minneapolis at UFC 87 on Saturday night, the stage could be set for a super-fight in Montreal later this year between the Canadian star and lightweight champion B.J. Penn. The Hawaiian fighter has long expressed a desire to return to the 170-pound ranks from 155 pounds to have another crack at St. Pierre, who won a split decision when the two welterweights met at UFC 58 in March 2006 in Las Vegas.
The UFC currently has shows booked through late October, including UFC 88 in Atlanta on Sept. 6, UFC 89 in Birmingham, England, on Oct. 18 and UFC 90 in Chicago on Oct. 25.
White made no mention of who might highlight the next Canadian card but acknowledged that Penn will be watching Saturday's title fight in Minneapolis closely.
''Obviously B.J. is pulling for GSP because he wants to fight him,'' he said.
The UFC had hoped that Penn would remain at 155 pounds to defend his title against the winner of Saturday's fight between lightweight contenders Kenny Florian and Roger Huerta. But White said he is unsure of Penn's plans.
''We know that B.J. wants to fight GSP again, especially if GSP wins. But no, we don't know.''
On the issue of troubled light-heavyweight Quinton (Rampage) Jackson, White said the former champion is physically fine.
Jackson was hospitalized for a mental health evaluation after he was arrested last month in Costa Mesa, Calif., after a five-kilometre chase that began as the result of two freeway collisions and another crash when he allegedly ran red lights in his pickup truck, according to police.
Jackson was booked for investigation of felony evading, reckless driving and hit and run, and released on US$25,000 bail.
''It wasn't psychiatric at all, it was physical,'' said White. ''He had a physical condition - exhaustion, dehydration that caused delirium.''
The alleged incident happened after Jackson lost his title July 5 to Forrest Griffin in Las Vegas.
White said Jackson, a California native, had remained in Las Vegas for a week after the fight and was fasting - living on energy drinks alone.
''Bad combination,'' said White.
''Physically and mentally he's OK. Now he's got some legal problems, obviously.''
yeah, he had a pretty rough childhood. i'm sure the show will go into more detail, but from what i recall, he was abused by both his birth parents and then his father left him with relatives on his side of the family who also abused him and made him sell things to tourists to earn money for them. his dad picked him up again and brought him back with his stepmom, where he suffered more abuse and eventually they left him with an aunt. there was a lot of crime and gang activity in the area. from there...i'm not sure what happened, but somehow he ended up spending some time on the streets and then eventually made it to san antonio and got into a school. one of his teachers adopted him and he considers her his mom.

ok, here's the clarification from the countdown show...with a lump in my throat...
he was born in dallas. at the age of six, his mother found out that his father had been having an affair. she started to abuse him, beating him severely the first time. the abuse continued for months until someone at his school asked him what had happened to him, and he was placed into a foster home. after a few months he was returned to his father, then his birth mother showed up and abducted him, only to abandon him in el salvador with her parents at the age of seven. there was a civil war going on at the time. his mother showed up one day to take him back and then left him on the doorstep of his father. that was the last he saw of his birth mother.
once back with his father and stepmother, his stepmother began beating him, like his mother had. when his father found out, he took him to live with relatives in mexico who put him to the streets to fend for himself, selling things to tourists to make his own way...at age nine! his father and stepmother took him back later to live with them in texas, only to be subject to more abuse from his stepmother. his father then began abusing drugs. his father left and roger was kicked out of the house at age 12 to live on the streets. he got caught up with a gang and was sleeping in shacks, rooftops, wherever.
he got back into school eventually and in grade nine, a classmate's mom assumed custody of him and took roger and her family to austin. there, he went into high school and started wrestling, playing football, etc. his wrestling coach tried to help him get into a division III school in minnesota on a scholarship for wrestling. one of his high school teachers helped him to write his letter for his scholarship. he told his life story in the letter and got the scholarship. that teacher later asked roger if she could adopt him, and that's who he considers his mom.
so that's the story clarified. pretty amazing to think of where he is now when you think about where he has been and could have ended up.
hey guys! just checking in quickly.

yes, i try to do a precis of what's going on in case you guys don't have time to check out what's happenin' try to catch the countdown show if you can, though. i think you'll like it. roger gets pretty emotional, and understandably so.
some news for lbc...:) sounds like tito will be making out like a bandit! he'll need it, as i guess he and jenna are expecting thier first baby. should be an excellent match up against babalu.
Tito Ortiz headed to Affliction
MMAjunkie.com
Aug 06, 2008
As expected former UFC light heavyweight champion and recent free agent Tito Ortiz has agreed to a contract with Affliction -- a deal the 33-year-old called a "ground-breaking record contract."
Ortiz broke the news to si.com.
Ortiz, who hadn't signed the deal at the time of the report, said he planned to and that his first fight would be against Renato "Babalu" Sobral at Affliction's second show, which takes place Oct. 11 at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV in Las Vegas.
MMAjunkie.com previously reported that Sobral has been publicly campaigning for the fight. Soon after his unanimous-decision victory over Mike Whitehead at Affliction's first show, Sobral also said that Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio had been working to put together the fight with Ortiz -- one that Sobral called his "dream fight."
Ortiz's final UFC fight came in May at UFC 84. He suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Lyoto Machida to push his record to 0-2-1 in his past three fights.
However, Ortiz remains a top box-office and pay-per-view draw, and he said that Affliction gave him a long-term deal that will keep him involved as both a fighter and executive involved in the company "back work."
"I'm going to a company that's going to take care of me, a company that's going to respect me, a company that's going to put me in the forefront and make me the ambassador that I've always been," Ortiz told si.com. "I think (Affliction executive) Mr. (Donald) Trump respects me at that value to get it. My heart's not with the UFC anymore because of how bad they treated me. They don't respect me and they don't see me as a businessman. All they think is that I'm a punk fighter that's going to fold, and I've already proven that I'm not going to fold to anything by not resigning with them."
Ortiz also hinted that, in addition to Sobral, he wants a rematch with Frank Shamrock. He also said a move up to the heavyweight division, one in which Affliction has half of the world's top-10 fighters, could happen.
Ortiz credited Affliction executive Donald Trump, whom Ortiz met while a contestant on "The Celebrity Apprentice," as a major reason he signed with the rookie promotion. He said EliteXC and the American Fight League had also contacted him with offers.
Affliction is hosting a press conference today in Las Vegas. The Ortiz signing could be announced during the event.

woohoo i got 1st row grand tier and the show was unbelievable... i'm still pumped up about it...
I watched the countdown show before i left for ny and roger's story is totally messed up. You are so right, it's amazing how far he has come. What do you think of the brock/hearing fight? It's a real test for brock, but if heath thinks he going to go in there and brock not be able to take a punch, he's got another thing coming IMO.
GSP/BJ will be awosome and i'll be there, but will it still happen when fitch beats him on saturday... lol j/k
thanks for the post about affliction, Tito, and babalu. I agree completely with you LBC, this is one tough fight for both fighters and there doesn't seem to be many warm up matches for these guys. I hope this org can keep it together cause they are putting on some awsome fights

tito vs. babalu is one that had been talked about in the ufc for a while, so i'm excited it's finally happening. good on affliction for putting together some matches that people have been wanting to see for a while. i feel like they went a little crazy with the salaries for the first event, and it doesn't look like they're slowing down much on the second one, although there were rumours about them asking some fighters to take pay cuts. it's good to see the fighters getting well compensated, in the majority of cases, by affliction. it makes a person wonder how long they can keep it up losing so much money so quickly, though. i guess we'll have to wait and see how much they are willing to go in the hole and how patient they will be on starting to see returns. unfortunately, i can see them putting on three events with good matches and then possibly having to call it quits. maybe i'm just overly skeptical because of the others who have attempted the same strong start, only to stumble early or fade away because they went too wild with the payouts and overestimated the income. i certainly hope i'm wrong and they are able to continue to set up those intriguing matches. in any case, i would say this is going to be a tough fight and a gooder!
good that you caught the countdown show, leafs. it was a a good one, i thought. have to say you're right about herring. he's shown some pretty terrible takedown defense in recent matches. against a guy like brock lesnar?!?...brock should be able to shoot right away and get him down and control him. if kongo, who is not known for his wrestling, can take heath down, i would guess that brock should be able to do it with relative ease.
i'm curious about whether or not bj really has much interest in fighting jon fitch. i have a feeling bj just wants to get that fight back against georges. the "muffin man" will return if he goes back up to 170. we'll see what happens if jon wins the belt on saturday, i guess. i'd be down with seeing either one!
good to hear about the show, as well! awesome!!
oh yeah, i just noticed there's a new feature on the fantasy league. we can check each other's picks for each event! no more secret rounds and minutes for me! haha
the weigh-ins are done, and pretty much everyone was right on the nose. so we're all set for tomorrow night!
UFC 87, August 9, 2008 - Target Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota - PPV
Main Card:
Georges St-Pierre (170) Vs. Jon Fitch (170) - WW Championship
Brock Lesnar (265) Vs. Heath Herring (250)
Roger Huerta (155) Vs. Kenny Florian (155)
Demian Maia (185) Vs. Jason MacDonald (185)
Manvel Gamburyan (155) Vs. Rob Emerson (155)
Pre-lims:
Luke Cummo (167) Vs. Tamdan McCrory (170)
Cheick Kongo (235) Vs. Dan Evenson (244)
Andre Gusmao (205) Vs. Jon Jones (205)
Steve Bruno (170) Vs. Chris Wilson (170)
Ben Saunders (170) Vs. Ryan Thomas (170)
My picks for tonight. I may rival my lowest score on this event as the fights are so hard to pick. 4 of the fights could really go to either guy, just depends on who can take advantage at the right time. I really have a hard time picking against Jon, but GSP is not going to want a repeat of losing his title on the first defense. I didn't catch the countdown show, but I'm sure GSP is taking this fight very seriously. Hopefully I will be able to stay awake tonight, I'm reaching a critical stage of sleep deprivation. Ceg, remember how I was hoping that this month would be less busy? I was WRONG, very very wrong. :(

LEVENS SUSPENDED AND FINED FOR POSITIVE TEST
Wednesday, July 30, 2008
by Jeff Cain
MMAWeekly.com

VICTIM MISCARRIES FOLLOWING CRASH WITH RAMPAGE
Saturday, August 02, 2008
MMAWeekly.com Staff

- FIGHT! magazine article with roger huerta again brings up questions about UFC fighter pay, as huerta says he no longer does PR for UFC after being paid 50$ per day for doing it in montreal and england. he mentions keith jardine as an example of a fighter who is being taken advantage of inside the octagon by the UFC.
DREAM 6 could be their last show if ratings do not improve and K-1 officials decide to end the production and possibly return to the K-1 Hero's format.

at one point, when talking about his childhood from nine years old and younger, he says, "...i can't see myself punching a kid in the face, abusing him - verbally, physically - at that age? i couldn't see myself doing that. i couldn't see...i couldn't...so fuck my real dad, fuck my real mom, fuck my fuckin' stepmom. seriously, how dare you!? how fucking dare you?!" :(
uhoh that is not good news for rampage... unfortunatly that will fall under manslaughter will it not?

i'm not really sure. this will be a tough one for the courts to figure out, i'm sure. they'll have to prove that the miscarriage was a result of the collision, i guess. then, they'll have to figure out quinton's mental state at the time. i guess he'd been fasting for days and hadn't slept, drinking energy drinks to stay awake.
really, just a horrible sirtuation for all involved. as you said, leafs, sympathy to the family.
yeah, he had a pretty rough childhood. i'm sure the show will go into more detail, but from what i recall, he was abused by both his birth parents and then his father left him with relatives on his side of the family who also abused him and made him sell things to tourists to earn money for them. his dad picked him up again and brought him back with his stepmom, where he suffered more abuse and eventually they left him with an aunt. there was a lot of crime and gang activity in the area. from there...i'm not sure what happened, but somehow he ended up spending some time on the streets and then eventually made it to san antonio and got into a school. one of his teachers adopted him and he considers her his mom.
i'm sure i don't have all the facts straight...but his parents were involved with drugs and alcohol and abandoned him a couple of times (in a couple of different countries, as well). he suffered a lot, most of it, i thnk, by the age of nine!
anyway, i'm looking forward to hearing more about it on the countdown show. sorry if i don't have some of the facts straight, but i've heard bits and pieces here and there.
i agree, some of these matches are close...tough to call. draws all around, i say!
Now he's got some legal problems, obviously.''

ok, here's the clarification from the countdown show...with a lump in my throat...
he was born in dallas. at the age of six, his mother found out that his father had been having an affair. she started to abuse him, beating him severely the first time. the abuse continued for months until someone at his school asked him what had happened to him, and he was placed into a foster home. after a few months he was returned to his father, then his birth mother showed up and abducted him, only to abandon him in el salvador with her parents at the age of seven. there was a civil war going on at the time. his mother showed up one day to take him back and then left him on the doorstep of his father. that was the last he saw of his birth mother.
once back with his father and stepmother, his stepmother began beating him, like his mother had. when his father found out, he took him to live with relatives in mexico who put him to the streets to fend for himself, selling things to tourists to make his own way...at age nine! his father and stepmother took him back later to live with them in texas, only to be subject to more abuse from his stepmother. his father then began abusing drugs. his father left and roger was kicked out of the house at age 12 to live on the streets. he got caught up with a gang and was sleeping in shacks, rooftops, wherever.
he got back into school eventually and in grade nine, a classmate's mom assumed custody of him and took roger and her family to austin. there, he went into high school and started wrestling, playing football, etc. his wrestling coach tried to help him get into a division III school in minnesota on a scholarship for wrestling. one of his high school teachers helped him to write his letter for his scholarship. he told his life story in the letter and got the scholarship. that teacher later asked roger if she could adopt him, and that's who he considers his mom.
so that's the story clarified. pretty amazing to think of where he is now when you think about where he has been and could have ended up.
work has been super busy these past couple of weeks, with my boss seemingly on perpetual vacation, and me left to hold the fort....
thanks for all the MMA info, mookie. between the Rampage story, and Roger's history, it's quite the tear jerker.... :(
i am looking forward to Saturday though!
and omg.... GSP vs. BJ in Montreal??????? un-fricken-believable!!!!!!
ceg!
seems as though we made a good impression on dana, eh?
sorry to hear about the hectic schedule! rest time on the weekend, though, right? or excitement time...!!! haha go roger! vas-y georges!!! i can't wait! it certainly will seem weird for me to not be cheering for jon, though. well, i guess i will be cheering for him to put on a great performance, but as the event draws closer, i am definitely feeling more excited about a st-pierre win.
yes, i try to do a precis of what's going on in case you guys don't have time to check out what's happenin' try to catch the countdown show if you can, though. i think you'll like it. roger gets pretty emotional, and understandably so.

This is gonna be awesome Mook. I really like both fighters, and this is one tough fight. No warm up fights in Affliction I guess!!
woohoo i got 1st row grand tier and the show was unbelievable... i'm still pumped up about it...
09/19/05, 05/09/06, 05/10/06
good that you caught the countdown show, leafs. it was a a good one, i thought. have to say you're right about herring. he's shown some pretty terrible takedown defense in recent matches. against a guy like brock lesnar?!?...brock should be able to shoot right away and get him down and control him. if kongo, who is not known for his wrestling, can take heath down, i would guess that brock should be able to do it with relative ease.
i'm curious about whether or not bj really has much interest in fighting jon fitch. i have a feeling bj just wants to get that fight back against georges. the "muffin man" will return if he goes back up to 170. we'll see what happens if jon wins the belt on saturday, i guess. i'd be down with seeing either one!
good to hear about the show, as well! awesome!!
oh yeah, i just noticed there's a new feature on the fantasy league. we can check each other's picks for each event! no more secret rounds and minutes for me! haha
