    ARLOVSKI VS. EMELIANENKO!!!

Affliction to hit Vegas in October
    By Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports
    Jul 23, 2008

LAS VEGAS – Fedor Emelianenko will defend his newly won World Association of Mixed Martial Arts heavyweight championship belt on Oct. 11 against Andrei Arlovski in the UFC’s backyard.

Affliction’s second MMA promotion will be at the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus, in the shadow of the UFC’s corporate offices, according to a venue official.

Affliction made its promotional debut last Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., with Emelianenko submitting ex-UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in just 36 seconds.

Affliction vice president Tom Atencio said Wednesday an announcement on its next show would come Tuesday. But arena director Daren Libonati, who is a big MMA supporter, said he was excited to have Emelianenko back in his building.

Libonati was instrumental in bringing the now-defunct PRIDE Fighting Championship to the U.S. for the first time on Oct. 21, 2006, with a show at Thomas & Mack that featured Emelianenko defending his heavyweight title against Mark Coleman.

“We’re really excited to have Affliction in the building and particularly to have Fedor and all those other great names,” Libonati said. “I remember working so hard with all those people at PRIDE and the ultimate goal was to put on a show (at Sam Boyd Stadium, UNLV’s football stadium) where the PRIDE champions would have defended their titles against the UFC champions.

“That’s what we were working toward in those two (PRIDE) shows we did back then, but it never worked out. We always want to bring big events here, and any time you have Fedor in your building you have a big event.”

Arlovski is a former UFC heavyweight champion who was impressive on Saturday’s Affliction show in stopping Ben Rothwell.

I am so friggin juiced for this fight!!! I love watching AA and think he has a good shot as anyone at upsetting Fedor. This might be fight of the year.
I'm sure Dana is pissed, not only about this fight but also being held in Vegas.

me too, lbc! :) definitely a great match. this is one i've been wanting to see for a long time, along with cro cop vs. arlovski and cro cop vs. fedor II. it's too bad that the ufc didn't make cro cop vs. arlovski happen when cro cop came over.

we talked about the mistake they were making by letting andrei go before, i seem to remember. it didn't really make a lot of sense. he still had huge fan reactions and as evidenced by the reaction he got last saturday and at the weigh-ins on friday he's still a huge draw. it's too bad that the ufc tends to put some fighters in positions where they HAVE to fight the "smart fight", which can turn into the boring fight. people thought he fought timidly against tim sylvia the third time after tim beat him the second match, but they forget that he fought for close to four rounds on a fractured (or broken?) shin. then the fight against werdum was supposed to be for a title shot, so what was he supposed to do there? he fought to win.

oh well, at least now he has the opportunity to fight his fight and become the #1 HW in the world. it should be outstanding. belarus vs. russia, sambo vs. sambo, leg locks vs. armbars, and champion vs. champion. all the ingredients for a fight of the year, indeed! :)

hey guys, just got up from passing out as soon as i got home earlier today lol. My bets didn't really pay off that well :( , i went with the Tim upset and we all know how that one turned out lol. I also put 30bux on negao to beat linland and although he did put up a pretty good fight, linland just didn't want to go down.
No where was playing that affliction card in vegas so i had to wait till i got home to watch it but there was still quite a bit of talk about it over in vegas.
I watched the ufc card in the flamingo room and we had a pretty good crowd going so they eventually turned it on the big screen after a couple fights. I don't really remember all of the fights so i'm going to watch it again, but i remember frankie looking pretty good against hermes, but he had to fight a smart fight to win and slipped up and got lazy a couple times and almost paid for it. Anderson looked amazing, that's pretty much all i can say... Plus i came out for the win in the fantasy league :) sorry All Manador, i squeeked out the win by 1 little point lol
great results guys, congrats to all about coming in 5th

ok i'm going to read all the posts i missed tomorrow, but i think i'm going to go back to bed. 5 long days of eating once a day, drinking about 20hours a day, playing poker 10hours a day and playing golf in 100-110degree weather really takes it toll lol

ST. PIERRE PUTS RUMORS OF UFC EXIT TO REST
    Friday, July 25, 2008
    by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com

Speculation has run rampant for the last few months with everyone from fighters to promoters weighing in on the possible defection of Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre, leaving the company when his current deal is up.

According the St. Pierre, he still has time left on his current deal and an ongoing negotiation is already happening between his camp and the UFC.

“I’m with the UFC, I have two more fights on my contract and you know we’re in negotiations,” said St. Pierre during an appearance on MMAWeekly Radio Thursday night. “Everything is going well you know. We’re talking and everything is good.”

Despite just about everyone having an opinion on what he should do next, St. Pierre says that he’s confident a deal will get done and the UFC will remain his home.

“We’ll end up to an agreement I’m sure,” St. Pierre said. “I like the UFC, I’m glad I’m champion, I want to represent the sport and also the UFC well.”

St. Pierre still maintains a strong relationship with his main sponsor, Affliction, regardless of the UFC’s current ban on the company’s shirts and name brands being worn by their fighters.

But the current welterweight champion isn’t looking at his sponsor as a future home for fighting. While nothing is ever certain until a deal is done, according to St. Pierre, he plans on fighting in the Octagon for a very long time to come.

“The UFC, that’s what made me known and if possible I want to retire there."

  • sorry for all the consecutive posts...i don't usually do that...:D haha

ceg and leafs...just wanted to let you know that spike is replaying the silva vs. irvin fight night tonight at 9 your time, and again tomorrow at 4 your time.

edit: also, i saw the pictures of anthony johnson today, post eye surgery. he had to have damage to his retina and a laceration repaired after the eye poke (s) that kevin burns hit him with. he said he's planning on appealing the "tko loss" with the NSAC. i hope he gets either a no contest or a disqualification. a no contest is more likely, but in no way should he have a loss on his record, in my opinion.
  • looks like tomorrow's show is all set, as everyone makes weight. eilers just may get thrown around the cage coming in at 218?!?! against big foot!

    go shayna! :)

i forgot to post this last night... so before i go back and read your posts i'll post some pearl jam related things from my vegas trip. Ok 1st thing is when we got our rental car we were trying to find a radio station to listen to. Once we hit 92.3fm i knew i had found my station, believe it or not, they were playing yellow ledbetter. I couldn't believe it and left on that channel for the rest of the week, if you ever go, that station is awsome, from pearl jam to pantera, they played it all.
The 2nd thing was a couple pictures i took in caesars palace. There is an antique store in there and they had a signed pearl jam guitar. It was priced at 4200 but before i left i had talked the lady down to 2000, still couldn't really afford it though so i had to pass. I told her if she dropped to 1200 it was a deal but i think 2000 was a pretty fair drop already.
if anybody knows how to post pictures on here i'll gladly post the 2 i took, it was a great collectible.

i see your light has gone out, releash...:(

the velasquez vs. o'brien fight just finished here. looks like we may have seen the first win of a possible contender at HW when we were in montreal. cain had another dominating win here. no question about a quick stoppage either.

the ending to the johnson vs. burns match was terrible. they gave a tko win to burns?!?! i was surprised at how well anthony johnson handled that. i don't know what i would have called it, but a tko for burns certainly would have been the last thing i expected after the break. he was warned repeatedly about the fingers in the eye and kept doing it...strange...he says he can't throw a closed jab? then why extend it as far as your opponent's face over and over if all you're doing is pawing with it? anyway, tough break for anthony. i thought he was winning the fight.

franca vs. edgar coming up...go hermes! :D

yup you are right. Johnson had that fight in the bag and then gets a tko loss because of an illegal move? That was a joke. I have to say Burns did look pretty good, he just needs to really work on his wrestling and sprawls/takedown defence. I was sitting beside a guy in the flamingo that was training with burns and flew down with him. Even he was saying that burns lost the fight. He also said that burns only works on maui thai and bjj, so i told him to give him a message to train hard on his takedown defence and he could do well in the ufc.

have to agree with joe on this one. a bit of a disappointing performance from vera. he looked great in the first, but wore down as the fight went on. he really could have won that fight in the first or second. i don't understand why he was only initiating with his kicks and some knees. he was only countering with his hands when he could have been using his reach the whole time to keep andy off and land more of those kicks.

should be an easy vera decision.

oh, and you're doing better than my 48 from last event, releash! :D

ya not his best fight and i agree that he probably could have won in the 2nd or 3rd but releash was right. Vera gassed and was smart about it. He knew if he gave it all he would have a good chance at a loss, so he kept some energy and passed himself out for a decision. Made for kind of a slow fight but atleast this will teach him a lesson to come in a lot more conditioned for a 205 fight. I think he'll do well at this weight.

just finished watching the affliction ppv, except for the babalu vs. whitehead match. still waiting to watch that.

best performances of the night by vitor belfort, mike pyle, mark hominick and andrei arlovski!!! arlovski threw his hands, leg kicks, a head kick, and even a flying knee at one point! went for a couple of heel hooks, and had a couple of takedowns. rothwell was able to capitalize on a mistake by arlovski and slipped into his guard to do a little damage in the second, but he was outclassed otherwise. andrei got up to end the round with a flurry. best fight of the night for both shows for sure. rothwell was very tough, but it showed that he doesn't belong in the top HW's like they were trying to claim.

it's good to see arlovski fighting his kind of fight again, and he's so much more technical now too. wow!

also, i hope leafs took my advice on the pyle bet...and not the advice on the "upset parlay" ;):D

oh, if anyone wants to see the affliction fights, let me know. ceg, the arlovski fight is in avi / xvid? format. probably won't be any wmv's for this one. :( (fangs on the sad face?)

i agree mookie, that andrea arlovski (sp) was great. fight of the night for both cards indeed. I wish he had fought like this in his last couple ufc fights. I still don't understand why they dropped him but what's done is done.

Believe it or not there are no parlay bets on ufc in vegas. I can't remember why, the teller told me but i forget. Anyways, only straight bets on mma and they only had 4 fights to bet on for the ufc card and 6 for the affliction card. The pyle bet wasn't offered unfortunatly.

if the fight were to take place in japan, it wouldn't matter. they have open weight matches there. they were both in pride at one point, but i don't think they ever competed in the same open weight grand prix tourney, though. i could be wrong about that. one card they were on together that i remember was pride 25 where silva knocked out carlos newton (i think that match was at 183 lbs., but it might have been lower...) with a flying knee. fedor won the HW title from antonio rodrigo nogueira the same night by decision.

fedor could actually lose some weight and silva simply not cut and they could meet at a catch weight somewhere around 215 or so, maybe 220...but the ufc has exclusive contracts so anderson can't fight anywhere else, and fedor turned down the offers from the ufc before.

certainly would be an interesting match, though! :)

sounds like it's either randy couture or josh barnett who will next meet fedor (although you never know what kind of shenanigans fedor's management has planned...it could very well be butterbean...maybe i shouldn't joke - i wouldn't be surprised! haha :D) and silva has a title defense against patrick cote coming up in either september or october, unless yushin okami can heal and get clearance for his broken hand very soon.

edit: rumours started today that andrei arlovski will be fighting fedor emelianenko in october or november. :):) dream match!

plus anderson seems to love the ufc so i unfortunatly it won't be happening anytime soon.

That's a great fight actually, arlovski/fedor. If arlovski fights like he did last weekend, that could be a amazing fight. I like it :)

thanks mookie, ya very exhausting lol

don't feel bad, the bets were well worth it. Tim was a -300 so it paid 3-1 which even how the fight went, were good odds at the time. And negao was something like -400 so on a $30 bet it was going to pay out 150. After watching that fight, i could have been up at any point i think.

that's right on. i hear stories like this sometimes, especially when events take place in vegas and i picture it being kind of small...if you know what i mean. it seems you're almost bound to run into or have a good conversation with someone directly related to a fighter or event going on. that's cool that you had a chance to talk to him about it. :)

indeed. ;) not as good as hansen vs. alvarez...i think that's still possibly my fight of the year choice (torres vs. maida being a close second), but still WELL worth watching!

i would reply to your other posts, leafs, but we're in agreement on most things. we need some animosity up in here! :D just kidding, man. we don't always all agree on things here, but it's so cool to talk about mma the way we can here. so refreshing after trying to wade through the crap on mma sites looking for information and news. you really can't have a reasonable discussion in most of those places...but that's our friendly neighbourhood interweb, i guess.

they are especially WAY out of hand right now with all the fighting about affliction vs. ufc and who is the best "pound for pound" fighter, etc. all just opinions...and some of those people just need to relax and enjoy the sport. there's enough people outside of it who don't like it that they don't need to be hating each other! haha

    anyway...looks like i'm rambling...that's new! :D
  • i'm running on fumes at the moment, hoping to stay awake for the whole show...the showtime and cbs broadcasts...i think once it gets going i might get a second wind.

anyone watchig the undercard on showtime / the fight network? anyone watching the cbs show? anyone? anyone?...beuller?...
  • p.s. go shayna! go Pezão!
  • good first round to start the night. :) i was really looking forward to seeing reis as i'd heard good things about him, but he looks like he's pretending in the stand up and it looked like every punch that caraway landed really hurt him. he was able to dominante position on the ground though. looking good so far.
  • slower second, but caraway lands a big knee!

man, there is a ton of blood on the mat from one of the pre-lims.
  • few good scrambles there in the third. caraway started getting "carried away" ;) with the knee and was throwing it every time he stood up, then he would get taken down EVERY time. i don't know why he didn't throw his hands in the third. he could have dropped reis pretty easily.

don't know who got this one...maybe reis?

yep, reis wins a unanimous decision. not an overly impressive showing, though. his defense on the feet looked very porous.
  • i feel bad for travis. he didn't really stand a chance there. feijao definitely looking more and more like anderson silva every match. those knees he was throwing looked just like anderson's. he landed a bunch of them at the end, a couple of flying ones, ithnk...couldn't tell from the camera angle and eventually travis drops and feijao finshes with strikes. this guy is only going to get better and better training with anderson and big nog. scary thought!

also, what is wrong with this crowd?!?! they're booing everything. hope it doesn't continue like that all night...
