just finished watching the affliction ppv, except for the babalu vs. whitehead match. still waiting to watch that.
best performances of the night by vitor belfort, mike pyle, mark hominick and andrei arlovski!!! arlovski threw his hands, leg kicks, a head kick, and even a flying knee at one point! went for a couple of heel hooks, and had a couple of takedowns. rothwell was able to capitalize on a mistake by arlovski and slipped into his guard to do a little damage in the second, but he was outclassed otherwise. andrei got up to end the round with a flurry. best fight of the night for both shows for sure. rothwell was very tough, but it showed that he doesn't belong in the top HW's like they were trying to claim.
it's good to see arlovski fighting his kind of fight again, and he's so much more technical now too. wow!
also, i hope leafs took my advice on the pyle bet...and not the advice on the "upset parlay" :D
oh, if anyone wants to see the affliction fights, let me know. ceg, the arlovski fight is in avi / xvid? format. probably won't be any wmv's for this one. :( (fangs on the sad face?)

hey guys! sorry i missed you on Saturday.... We had fun over at B.E.'s house, with bbq, many ceasars, and spinning tunes on the record player.
sadly though, i forgot to set the tape... so i missed the event all together!!
i just read your play-by-play though, and it sounds like it turned out to be a pretty good night..... what happened in the silva fight?? sounds like it ended pretty quickly??
~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~
have fun and good luck on the picks, ceg! i think i may go over to smithers' place if i'm feeling up to it. more than likely, though, i'll start reading the spoilers and stay home.
...also, no blackjack...good plan!
...one more also, good luck to NY PJ1 making some $ off your pics.
hehe... ok. no blackjack. we'll have to stick to buffets, umbrella drinks, and betting on fights.
~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~
Hey guys!!! I've been away too long. :( I missed you all too! I've been working like a crazy person for the last two weeks ... close to 80 hours each week.
But I was able to get my picks in for the Fight Night ... albeit it with one minute to spare, so who knows how well I will do.
Looking forward to chatting with you all tonight.
J! you're alive!!
welcome back! i hope you enjoyed your night off. we seem to be on opposite schedules.... you're always here when i'm away!
that's ok... at least that way, mookie's always got one of us girls around!

i shall try to find the individual matches for you, ceg. i have done that one before! all excited to come home and watch a show and...uh-oh!
in the silva / irvin fight, there wasn't much to it. a little feeling out, james threw a leg kick, silva caught it and delivered a straight right hand to james' jaw and he went down immediately, covered up and then took a few unecessary shots that opened up the wound that releash mentioned.
hold on! i can get megaupload at work.... which means i might be able to play the avi file here! let's give it a try.... sounds like it was a great fight!
i'm trying to straighten out my files here with all the shows from the weekend! just finished uploading the pre-lims from the fight night...so i had to delete the affliction files. should only take me a few minutes to get them back. i used rapidshare for the pre-lims...so i hope that is ok? it works faster than megaupload for me.
I wish they didn't have weight classes so Fedor Emelianenko could fight Anderson Silva! It seems like these two can't find any good competition.. atleast from the fights I've seen.
Whoa, chill bro... you know you can't raise your voice like that when the lion's here.
I wish they didn't have weight classes so Fedor Emelianenko could fight Anderson Silva! It seems like these two can't find any good competition.. atleast from the fights I've seen.
if the fight were to take place in japan, it wouldn't matter. they have open weight matches there. they were both in pride at one point, but i don't think they ever competed in the same open weight grand prix tourney, though. i could be wrong about that. one card they were on together that i remember was pride 25 where silva knocked out carlos newton (i think that match was at 183 lbs., but it might have been lower...) with a flying knee. fedor won the HW title from antonio rodrigo nogueira the same night by decision.
fedor could actually lose some weight and silva simply not cut and they could meet at a catch weight somewhere around 215 or so, maybe 220...but the ufc has exclusive contracts so anderson can't fight anywhere else, and fedor turned down the offers from the ufc before.
certainly would be an interesting match, though!
sounds like it's either randy couture or josh barnett who will next meet fedor (although you never know what kind of shenanigans fedor's management has planned...it could very well be butterbean...maybe i shouldn't joke - i wouldn't be surprised! haha ) and silva has a title defense against patrick cote coming up in either september or october, unless yushin okami can heal and get clearance for his broken hand very soon.
edit: rumours started today that andrei arlovski will be fighting fedor emelianenko in october or november. :):) dream match!

with all the shows from last weekend, i almost forgot about this weekend! just kidding, of course, i'm looking forward to this one. should be pretty schweet. i'm hoping scott and robbie pick up where they left off.

No.. I just got into the sport again. I have to pay more attention to this thread now. I used to watch it a lot back in 1997-98 when Gracie, Severn, Shamrock, etc. ruled the ring. That shit used to be crazy.. with the elimination tournaments, no weight class, and minimal rules!! I watched Kimbo barely beat that one guy a month or so ago.. and I've seen a couple Anderson Silva and Fedor fights. I'm extremely impressed by those two though... especially Silva. That guy's an animal:eek:

well, welcome to the thread, trailer! welcome back to the sport, too!
much like you i was into it in the first ten - fifteen events or so and then it became hard to get on tv. i kind of got out of touch with it until it started getting back on, and then the internet helped a lot!!! i was able to catch up with a lot of the stuff i'd missed and see how the sport had progressed.
i certainly remember those days. they completely changed the way that people looked at martial arts and people finally started to learn about different disciplines and how to take the best parts from each and combine them into a new style, much like what bruce lee had envisioned. it's fun to go back and watch some of those old shows and the guys you mentioned sometimes!
personally, i am much more impressed with the progress of anderson silva, especially over the last few years. it's amazing, and i agree with you, he's an animal indeed! fedor, on the other hand, has really only faced two good HW's in the past few years...tim sylvia and mark hunt...and hunt doesn't have much of a ground game. his other three matches were against a MW in matt lindland, and two matches against "giants" in japan. neither fighter really posed any threat to him because they were just big with, shall we say, very limited skills. so i feel like he has a couple more fights he has to take to get back to being where he was back when he was defeating the very good HW's in pride. just my personal opinion. in his defense, he did have some injuries and his management team is a little strange in the way they handle his career...
anyway, i'm rambling on...the reason why i asked was because i sent the affliction show to the "regulars" in the thread , so i'll send you a pm and you can decide which fights you want to download.
holy pie! it's a dream match! i hope it takes place.
ARLOVSKI VS. EMELIANENKO!!!
Affliction to hit Vegas in October
By Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports
Jul 23, 2008
LAS VEGAS – Fedor Emelianenko will defend his newly won World Association of Mixed Martial Arts heavyweight championship belt on Oct. 11 against Andrei Arlovski in the UFC’s backyard.
Affliction’s second MMA promotion will be at the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus, in the shadow of the UFC’s corporate offices, according to a venue official.
Affliction made its promotional debut last Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., with Emelianenko submitting ex-UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in just 36 seconds.
Affliction vice president Tom Atencio said Wednesday an announcement on its next show would come Tuesday. But arena director Daren Libonati, who is a big MMA supporter, said he was excited to have Emelianenko back in his building.
Libonati was instrumental in bringing the now-defunct PRIDE Fighting Championship to the U.S. for the first time on Oct. 21, 2006, with a show at Thomas & Mack that featured Emelianenko defending his heavyweight title against Mark Coleman.
“We’re really excited to have Affliction in the building and particularly to have Fedor and all those other great names,” Libonati said. “I remember working so hard with all those people at PRIDE and the ultimate goal was to put on a show (at Sam Boyd Stadium, UNLV’s football stadium) where the PRIDE champions would have defended their titles against the UFC champions.
“That’s what we were working toward in those two (PRIDE) shows we did back then, but it never worked out. We always want to bring big events here, and any time you have Fedor in your building you have a big event.”
Arlovski is a former UFC heavyweight champion who was impressive on Saturday’s Affliction show in stopping Ben Rothwell.
anyway, i'm rambling on...the reason why i asked was because i sent the affliction show to the "regulars" in the thread , so i'll send you a pm and you can decide which fights you want to download.

one way or another, i will see andrei!!!

Markham is an animal. This guy is gonna be a titleholder.
so i take it it did not go in Brodie's favour?
damn... that seems to be a theme lately.... :(
