hahahaha excatly what i was thinking about gabe.

ya gina looked good but i could see here making the 140 if she put everything into it and cut a bit earlier or tried to stay at about 155-160 normally. Like you said, she has a lot on her plate right now and may be doing a little too much. I hope she has the time to fully prepare for her next fight.

no this guy seemed pretty cool, was sucking up to kimbo alot though lol. just looked it up and it was jared shaw i think... a brother of gary???

ok, i know who you mean now! i'm not sure what relation it is, but i'm sure he's related to gary. :D

true what you say about gina. she put herself in a catch 22 by going on american gladiators to help promote both herself and elite xc along with the sport. it probably was more success than she anticipated in terms of the show doing sell and her time needed for it. she's certaily helped bring attention the women's mma at least.

more time, dedication and training will serve her well indeed.

...i couldn't help thinking of that interview with gray maynard where he's describing gabe's weightcut...:D

edit: show starts with an introduction, "instructional", and rules explanation from frank shamrock. funny that when they got to "no knees to the head of a grounded opponent", they showed his illegal knees to renzo gracie as an example. :D

i actually liked the introduction, it explained a lot to casual fans, and really cut down on questions from people that hadn't seen mma before.
I didn't even realize that it was his illegal knee they showed, that's good stuff lol

pretty much as expected from the first bout, rogers lands a strike to end it in the first after a bit of dirty boxing and knees in the clinch. quick finish.

ya, nothing really special in this fight. It was a decent way to start off the night though.

hell yeah! baroni got an early flurry of punches off and put villasenor on his back after catching a kick, but than joe landed a punch that hurt baroni...locked up a tight standing gullotine that took the wind out of baroni and villasenor backs off after a few seconds to land the final blows! villasenor ends baroni's night early!!! :D:) sweet.

pretty much exactly what i was saying to my buddies. villasenor hurt him with that punch but that gullotine was deep and really killed baroni, after that it was an easy finish for vilasenor. Good fight and good finish :)

yeah, it was a good quick lesson for those tuning in for the first time. it was funny to see frank talk about the illegal knee and then show one of his own as the example! :D

it's over! young can't continue after the damage in the second.

    gina remains undefeated! :)

what a fight! fight of the night so far!!!

dude, what a freakin fight. just watched it again and it was great, noticed at the beginning the guy with Mauro and frank said it was a 145 bout, then i think it was mauro said that gina came in overweight.
Like you said, in the 1st Gina did a great job with that kick and the right. Katlin stayed right in there though.
In the 2nd gina took control and controlled the fight. When she landed that punch that hurt young i though it was going to stopped while they were standing. Katlin was a warrior and wouldn't give up at all, tons of respect to her.
Love that Gina admits that she didn't put it all into it and was "sloppy" and needs to get back into the gym.

    no...a no contest...:(

lawler shows sportsmanship after poking smith in the eye acidentally, giving him time to recover, but the doctor comes in and checks the eye and stops the fight! they didn't even give him the time to recover...poor decision at the end. smith seemed ready to continue. great fight, though, so i hope there is a rematch.

both fighters seemed really disappointed. rightfully so.

yup amazing fight and too bad it was stopped. I really have no idea why that was stopped, guess the rematch will be headlining to the next cbs fight night lol.
Robbie owned the 1st round but i thought smith was coming on strong in the 2nd. Both fighters had one another hurt at different times and the other took it and fought back, loved this fight.

the craziness continues...a kimbo vs. thompson fight that goes out of the first round! kimbo hurt thompson on the feet a couple of times, but showed poor takedown defense and ground skills as james was able to take him down easily in the first and second. he had him in a few bad spots on the ground in the first, but really had him in trouble for the last minute of the second round as he had him in a crucifix against the cage, landing elbows and punches. kimbo was saved by the bell, but the fight very well could have been called there. kimbo comes out tired and looking weak, but lands a couple of punches to thompson's ear and it wobbles him and the ref calls the fight. it could be argued that thompson actually had kimbo in more trouble at the end of the second.

anyway, controversial quick stoppage finish to what was actually a pretty entertaining fight. we got to see that kimbo can be taken down easily, that his cardio isn't close to where it should be and that his ground game is still pretty poor. the megapunk almost pulls off the upset!

Yup another good (and surpirsing) fight on the night. Thompson was not going to win this fight even if it went to the judges, but he exposed alot of Kimbo. You put Kimbo against brock lesner and there is no way in hell that kimbo goes to the 2nd round.
I was impressed with that sweep that Kimbo pulled off and got mount from, but if you put him up against a good striker/wrestler, he is screwed. He needs a lot of work but i guess is ok, until Tito comes in and takes over "the face" of elite xc :)

not reading since I'm in the west and the fights are still going on, but how has Dana White, a shrewed business man, not get female MMA fights in the UFC before CBS?

the girls kicked ass, love Muay Thai, Gina has great hands...

i agree, great fight and it could really do alot for the sport. Gina has alot more than just great hands :)

if CBS makes MMA on CBS a mainstay, I wonder what effect it'll have on the UFC pay per views overtime? can't be good if they start getting any UFC talent. I've been pissed with the UFC pay per view prices rising yet again. 34.95, then 39.95, not 44.95...even with spreading the price with friends it irratates me. Yet, I continue to pay, lol

i figure that if this happens elite xc will start having ppv's aswell and have their cbs shows like ufc has their fight night shows. The prices of ppv suck, but ya it sucks even more that i can't help but get it lol

    :D

i used to dislike mauro's style when he first started doing pride, but he actually grows on you a bit. i like him now. i can see how would seem annoying, though. gus seems a bit green, and frank is being frank.

yup, i agree with you here about maruo, i love his style. Frank did pretty much what i expected and was pretty good. The other guys (gus) needs to do some work but i wasn't really that put off by him.

i think robbie lawler was doing the "you're not going to get me with that" when he shook his head after it looked like smith was hurt to the body. smith did the same thing in the sell fight when he was hurt badly on a hook to the body and when sell came in looking for the finish, smith blasted him with a stright right hand to knock him out.

...in any case, i think smith was actually hurt there...:)

great fight, though! what a back and forth battle!

yup, fight of the night!!! too bad about the stoppage :( I remember the smith/sell match you are talking about, what a freaking finish to that fight

sorry mr announcer, Lawler is not even close to being in the same league as Anderson Silva

hahaha i hope that was a joke cause you are right, not even close to the same league.

watching it again, i'm still confused.

the fighters pretty much called the break themselves, the ref calls time to give smith time to recover and the doctor stops it almost immediately? smith obviously wanted to continue, but just needed a moment to recover from the accidental poke.

disappointing end to what was a great battle.

man i just watched it again and timed it, about 2minutes to recover. He said he could continue and they still stopped it, absolute bull shyt. Both fighters were really humble about it (as much as smith could be), but that was a bit of disgrace

  • thanks for your thoughts on the show, leafs! :) i've watched the gina vs. kaitlin match quite a few times now :D and the smith vs. lawler one a few times too...still feel bad for scott smith after being told by the ref he'd have five minutes to recover and then has the fight stopped because he's taking that time to reover! confusing.

it looks by tsn's schedule that the wec show might be on the main network tonight. can't wait for pulver vs. faber and miguel torres is always exciting to watch! it has to be the mullet! :D

Sorry I wasn't around to post last night. I tivo'd the event and ended up watching the fights later on with some friends. Unfortunately because the event ran long the tivo stopped recording after the Lawler/Smith fight, so I completely missed the Kimbo fight.

Gina and Kaitlin was a great fight ... a good introduction to female fighters for the general public.

Definitely looking forward to Faber v. Pulver tonight. :)

we missed you and ceg. :( well actually i missed everyone, as i was by myself for the east coast feed! :D

you didn't miss a great match, just a surprising one. it was more entertaining than i thought it would be, but it was far from technical.

gina and kaitlin saved the show, just like gina and julie kedzie did for the first time on showtime. lawler and smith was great, but ended in controversy. at least this one wasn't a controversial finish and i think it really surprised people how good the match was.

i'm looking forward to tonight, but my head is absolutely killing me. i'm hoping i can stay up for the show, but if i can get to sleep i might take the opportunity. mookie have broken tooth = serious pain...i wish i could just pull it out!

oh, and my "tape" stopped at around the same time. they really went over on time.

alright, i'm ready for tonight. I'm going to try and be around to post some thoughts during the card. Hopefully I'll see you guys around.

oh and i think you're right mookie, there is no basketball game on so the WEC show is airing on the regular tsn channel and tsnhd. :)

I got to think there is more money in going the way of the traditional sports, and getting a tv contract of some kind. PPV definitely sucks ass.

i can't wait for the two championships especially. pulver and faber could be very interesting, and miguel torres is probably the best submission guy around at 135. his match with manny tapia was more anticipated, but tapia got injured and now maeda is his opponent. should still be a good one, though.

it will be different to see the WEC show in an arena as opposed to the smaller venues they usually use in vegas. they're going to go crazy for urijah in his hometown! my heart says pick pulver, but my head says faber. both good guys and fighters, so i just hope it's a good fight.

anyway, hope to have you around tonight. i think i just took too much pain medication, but i'll try to stay up! :D

hey guys! sorry i've been MIA for a while....

my friend Colleen and my 'nephew' Shea are visiting for the week, and i played in a golf tournament yesterday (poorly ;))...

i didn't watch the whole event, but i did get home in time for Gina's match. Colleen was brave and watched it with me. i tried to explain as much as i could to her, but as we watched kaitlin's bruised face in a rear naked choke, i was unsuccessful in swaying her over to the pro-MMA side of things. :o:p

i'm also moving offices at work tomorrow, so might be offline for yet another day.

    missin' everyone... xoxox

    ps. Gina!

    gina indeed! :)

you were missed last evening, ceg. ;) thanks for trying to introduce new fans, but as you thought it wasn't for colleen, eh? it was a great fight, though. kaitlin showed great heart and gina showed excellent skills and great game plan.

the announcers didn't notice, as they had the bad camera angle, but gina actually was close to catching a gogplata! when kaitlin took her down in the first. kaitlin's elbow wasn't all the way through, though, so gina couldn't trap her arm to the mat and finish it. would have been an exciting finish, but kaitlin was able to turn the right way to get out of it.

    wec just starting now...

mccullough vs. alexander to start. i thought curran vs. brown was on the main card, but i guess not...we'll see how mccollough comes back after a big title loss to jamie varner.

(sorry to hear about the results in the golf tournament...:()

    once more...haha...gina!

another golfer???? what'd ya shoot? I was a little off yesterday and landed up with a 91, still a decent score for me. Par'd the 1st and last hole and had an eagle chance on the 8th hole, but 2 putted. got the birdie atleast :)

    Hello friends!!

Watching the McCullough vs. Alexander right now. Nothing too exciting in Round 1 yet.

I thought it was interesting that Clay Guida is standing right near the entrance to the octagon. I wonder how Dana/UFC feels about having one of their fighters currently under contract at a WEC event.

I don't know if WEC is owned by ufc or not but they are close. UFC is always promoting WEC and always point out wec fighters in their audience. Not to mention that a contracted ufc fighter (Mir) is commentating i think.

I don't know if mma has the right format for a traditional tv sports contract. It works well for baseball, football, basketball, hockey because they have very regular games, whereas mma has events every couple of weeks. We'll have to see how this CBS/EliteXC experiment works out.

yeah, not too exciting through two now. rob's looking very conservative. as mir was saying, he's standing up easily when alexander takes him down...he should open up a bit, but maybe he's feeling rusty.

oh, and the UFC and WEC are both zuffa owned, so it's all cool about clay being there. :) no "punishment" from dana! :D

You're right leafs, the UFC and WEC are close enough that it's probably not a big deal. btw, I'm not a fan of Mir's commentary.

Edit: Thanks for the info Mookie ... as usual you are full of useful knowledge. Hope the pain meds are working for you
