The latest issue of Rolling Stone has a very brief article/interview with Dana White.

Bald and badass ... pretty accurate description of Dana. The story has been done a thousand times already, I'd really like to see some of the fighters get mainstream interviews, particularly guys like GSP, Kenny Florian, BJ Penn and of course, Gray Maynard.

so, how do you guys feel about Rampage's coaching ability? i mean, besides the fact that he was napping through the training session ;)....

i mean, during the Jesse/Dante fight, you constantly heard Forrest giving Jesse direction. You didn't hear Rampage's voice until half way through the 2nd round, when he shouts "Dante, stand up! You're not doing anything from your back!"... i mean, it took him 7 minutes to figure that out and say somethng?

so far, the only two wins that Rampage has gotten are from the two guys that really didn't need all that much direction.

overall, the Jesse/Dante fight was petty poor for a quarter final match!

the Matt/Amir fight was really good though. i like both guys, so i didn't know who to cheer for. i think Matt was very gracious in defeat. for all the talk about him being on the verge of snapping all the time, he seemed pretty layed back in the end....

ya i'm too fond of rampage as a coach, but really that's not his thing. Matt/Amir fight was great like you said, i was cheering for matt brown but amir is awsome. I hope he does really well in this thing, if memory serves me right, he has like no experience, so that's damn good.

looks like tomorrow's elitexc show on cbs is set to go, despite gina carano coming in at 3.5. lbs. over. they really need to look at making that division 145 lbs., otherwise she kills herself to make weight every time or misses again. young, of course, accepted the bout after being informed prior to weigh-ins that gina would be over. young will take part of gina's purse as a penalty to carano. the people who hate gina are loving it!

anyway, i'm still excited to see carano vs. young, and lawler vs. smith. :)

CBS-ELITE XC: GINA CARANO FAILS TO MAKE WEIGHT
    Friday, May 30, 2008
    MMAWeekly.com

The fighters for Saturday’s CBS-EliteXC Saturday Night Fights weighed in on Friday outside the Prudential Center, where the event will take place, in Newark, N.J.

Despite most fighters making weight, one the most notable did not. Gina Carano, contracted to fight Kaitlin Young at a weight of 140 pounds, weighed in at 144.5 pounds. Since the bout is not a title fight, it will be allowed to take place, but Carano will have to forfeit 12.5 percent of her purse to Young as a penalty.

Young weighed in at 140.5 pounds, which is allowable as there is a one-pound tolerance for non-title bouts.

The event’s only championship clash is between current middleweight champion Robbie Lawler and challenger Scott Smith. Both fighters weighed in at 184.5 pounds.

    Main Card (on CBS Television):

Kimbo Slice (235.5) vs. James Thompson (257)
Robbie Lawler (184.5) vs. Scott Smith (184.5)
Gina Carano (144.5) vs. Kaitlin Young (140.5)
Jon Murphy (260.5) vs. Brett Rogers (263.5)
Phil Baroni (185) vs. Joey Villasenor (184.5)

    Preliminary Bouts (on CBSSports.com):

Carlton Haselrig (263) vs. Carlos Moreno (261)
Jim Bova (160.5) vs. Chris Liguori (161)
Matt Makowski (171) vs. Nick Serra (167)
Wilson Reis (140.5) vs. Justin Robbins (140.5)
James “Binky” Jones (154.5) vs. Calvin Kattar (155.5)

    Not Broadcast:

Zach Makovsky (135) vs. Andre Soares (134)
Mike Groves (154) vs. Joe Sampieri (155)

sucks that gina didn't make weight, guess i'm going to start calling her Gabe lol. You are probably right about making it 145, she is a very vital part to the organizations success, they need to fix this problem... it looks like they have weird weight classes anyways... why are some guys at 155 and others at 160?
anyways, should be a good show tonight, some of the guys from elite were on inside mma last night (frank shamrock, kimbo, and some other guy that i don't remember), pretty good episode if you didn't catch it.

*whispers in death bed voice*... "put me back in, bj...put me back in, gray..." :D trying to do my gabe impression there...:D

this is part of the controversy and why some people dislike gina, although many people seem to find no reason to dislike her. they just dislike her. elite xc made a 140 womens's division "for her" and a 160 division "for" nick diaz. they said they were trying to make an attempt to start bringing in more weight classes, which would be a good thing in my opinion, but really it was because diaz and gina are two of their biggest stars and diaz can't make 155, and gina has a great deal of difficulty making 135. she nearly kills herself to make 140! they should just go with 135, 145, 155 for the female division, but there's really no one out there to fight in the 145 and 155 lb. range unless 135 fighters start fighting at 145 and stop cutting weight. hope it works itself out as the sport grows.

it's weird, because gina looked like death making 141.1 last time...no worries the time before that and this time she looked very fit, but was 3.5 over  in any case, i'm happy she didn't deplete herself for this show too much, but at the same time the fight was signed at 140...so it is a bit unprofessional. i'm not sure kaitlin cares too much, though. she dropped 10 lbs. herself for this one, and gina had to try to lose the 20 lbs. she had to gain for american gladiators season two in a month! not an easy task.

i just downloaded the inside mma episode today. thanks for the heads up. i'll have to watch it later, though, as i just woke up in time to catch the show...damn, missed the pre-lims online!

i think the very shady ;) gary shaw is the "other guy"...shady and creepy, that guy...
  • Im gonan try and go to this

the london show? have you been when they came over before? i heard the english fans are great. :)

fudge! sorry, leafs. why do these events always get found out about after the fact!?!

none of us are destined to meet randy! :D
  • ten minutes until "prime time" on CBS...this is crazy! i remember when we couldn't even get MMA on PPV anymore...now on network tv...wow!

i'm going to pee my pants for two of these fights at least!

go gina! :) ...and to a lesser extent, go scott smith...;)

edit: show starts with an introduction, "instructional", and rules explanation from frank shamrock. funny that when they got to "no knees to the head of a grounded opponent", they showed his illegal knees to renzo gracie as an example. :D
  • pretty much as expected from the first bout, rogers lands a strike to end it in the first after a bit of dirty boxing and knees in the clinch. quick finish.
  • hell yeah! baroni got an early flurry of punches off and put villasenor on his back after catching a kick, but than joe landed a punch that hurt baroni...locked up a tight standing gullotine that took the wind out of baroni and villasenor backs off after a few seconds to land the final blows! villasenor ends baroni's night early!!! :D:) sweet.
  • here we go...

    go gina! :)
  • great round! gina keeping young off with the teap and landing that right hand repeatedly because of the distance kept. she's showing great reads on the high kicks, and kaitlin's defense against the teap and right hand looks poor. gina catches a leg kick and pushes young down to her back. they scramble back to the feet, exchange and after a clinch kaitlin gets a takedown but falls into a gogoplata attempt by carano! gina can't quite get it locked in and kaitlin eventually escapes! she lands a big strike coming out and tried to land a head kick as gina stands. gina waits and gets back up as kaitlin throws a few wild high kicks and a spinning kick. gina lands a counter high kick and continues to punish young with the teap and the combinations. looks like kaitlin is just looking for a home run.

    great fight! :)
  • holy fucking fight! :D both fighters tiring a bit, but kaitlin is wilting with the damage from the punches. gina again getting the better of the standing exchanges, but kaitlin is hanging in there. gina has her in trouble against the fence after landing a couple of strong punches flush and knees to the body in the clinch, and kaitlin won't go down. gina almost punches herself out as kaitlin is kept up by the fence and in big trouble. gina pounces on kaitlin's back after pushing her down with a strong front kick and works for the RNC at the end!!! she finally got it sunk in as the horn sounded!

wow! these girls are showing the guys how it's done. :)
  • it's over! young can't continue after the damage in the second.

    gina remains undefeated! :)

what a fight! fight of the night so far!!!
  • what a fight smith and lawler are putting on! i can't believe these guys are both still standing!

a bit of a feeling out process to begin with, but a back and forth striking battle ever since. smith was saved by the bell in the first. lawler pawing out and landing jabs and rights, and smith landing some beautiful elbows out of the clinch, especially those upward ones! great fight!
  • have to agree with mauro, what's with the booing? these guys are putting it all out there!
  • no...a no contest...:(

lawler shows sportsmanship after poking smith in the eye acidentally, giving him time to recover, but the doctor comes in and checks the eye and stops the fight! they didn't even give him the time to recover...poor decision at the end. smith seemed ready to continue. great fight, though, so i hope there is a rematch.

both fighters seemed really disappointed. rightfully so.
  • the craziness continues...a kimbo vs. thompson fight that goes out of the first round! kimbo hurt thompson on the feet a couple of times, but showed poor takedown defense and ground skills as james was able to take him down easily in the first and second. he had him in a few bad spots on the ground in the first, but really had him in trouble for the last minute of the second round as he had him in a crucifix against the cage, landing elbows and punches. kimbo was saved by the bell, but the fight very well could have been called there. kimbo comes out tired and looking weak, but lands a couple of punches to thompson's ear and it wobbles him and the ref calls the fight. it could be argued that thompson actually had kimbo in more trouble at the end of the second.

anyway, controversial quick stoppage finish to what was actually a pretty entertaining fight. we got to see that kimbo can be taken down easily, that his cardio isn't close to where it should be and that his ground game is still pretty poor. the megapunk almost pulls off the upset!
