American workers rights are shit. That is why I chose never to work in the US again (unless transferred to US by European firm, with European benefits, etc). America is the greediest of all. Greed is everywhere but the americans are the masters of it. In western europe, workers have fought long and hard for their rights (and the UK is one of the 'worst' countries I worked in regarding workers rights/benefits!). Americans should wake up. This whole tipping issue, where your tip is your 'salary' is just a example of how bad they are treated. I won't even go into illness, holidays, etc.

which was precisely my point. maybe this is what sounded so fishy to me... you made it sound like you working in america was a temporary thing, so i wondered if you were really here long enough to get a sense of how the economy works here. sounds like you just managed to escape, so kudos!

i notice helen got REAL quiet all of a sudden. plenty of fight when she thinks she can bs her way, then acting like it never happened when someone points out she's wrong.

Nope.. as much as I loved California my life there and my lovely friends, etc., having already had worked in Europe before that, I saw what the difference was. Didn't take me long to make up my mind.

Helen has probably gone home now.

yeah, the differences are pretty stark. if you're a protected class and they mistreat you, you can sue your way into retirement, but other than that they can pretty much do whatever they damn well please to you.

she managed to respond to people posting after me. it's a pattern with her. but im not trying to draw you into this, just thinking out loud and mentally rolling my eyes at how unsurprised i am by it. didnt wanna make 2 posts for it.

    ignorant cheapskate bastard ;)
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

they get paid real wages and get benefits too ;) totally different from waiters.

here's a general rule of tipping in america. we basically tip out of guilt for our fat, lazy asses. we tip people for doing for us things we could do ourselves but would rather not becos it would demand effort. it is only when we are in personal contact with someone too. i'll illustrate contrasts for everyone.

    food service:
fast food- it's an assembly line, they have no personal contact with us, we give them money, they hand over food. no need to tip.
restaurant- we are so fucking fat and lazy we not only can't fix our own food, we want you to carry it to us. if we could, we'd have you feed it to us. and we knw you know we are gluttonous pieces of shit, so here's a few dollars for the indignity of having to put up with our bullshit for an hour of your day.

    transportation:
public bus/subway- they're people movers, the guy behind the bulletproof window hands you a ticket and the bus driver has no desire to speak to you. get on the bus, don't cause a problem, and get the fuck off. no relationship, no tip.
taxi- we know, it's unamerican not to have our own car and drive our own fat asses around. we know we're only going 3 blocks away but it's tough hauling this lard that far. so let us tumble into your car and haul us to it. if there were a human being capable of pulling a rickshaw with our weight in it, we'd do that too. so here's a few dollars for the indignity of having to haul our fat fucking asses around in close quarters and converse with us.

combo of greed and independence. americans aren't supposed to need anything from anyone. so any time we're asking for personal service or attention, we tip out of guilt for not being able to do that for ourselves like john wayne would have.

this isn't right. people really only take cabs in major cities, and in major cities it's pretty damn common not to have your own car. that's off, it's not the reason behind tipping cab drivers. it's more like because it's a one-on-one thing, and it's more of a luxury/higher level of service than taking the bus.

But you already pay very good money for that service!

they driver isn't getting that money though.

I think the given price is sort of like, paying the for the CAR RIDE, while the tip is like, covering the fact that a person had to give it to you.

i know, i was trying to inject a bit of humor into it. but you nailed the point i was essentially trying to make... the tip comes into play whenever there is one-on-one luxury essentially. you tip a taxi, not a bus driver. a waiter, not a fast food worker.

aye.. its not the actual tipping, its the defense of the system by people when it is so obviously flawed.

its akin to me defending working sundays all day in a supermarket.. nobody should work sundays, its a nice day for everyone to have off.. so while its a customary thing here for certain people to work sundays doesnt mean i agree with it and that I will use my last breath to defend it... the opposite.. its a shit system for people who should be at home nursing hangovers... but because of consumerism they have to work.. its crap

yeah but in your protest you're hurting other people. If everyone suddenly stopped tipping, it's not going to do any good to "change the system", it's only going to make every server in the country homeless.

My dad says stores used to be closed on Sundays in the US as well. Actually he rants about how the loss of the that has affected families. Nowadays I know of some suburban large chain grocery stores that are open 24/7-365. They don't close for even a single holiday. That's consumerism.

fucking fascist religious fundamentalist... yeah, got to make sure we all rest on the day jesus said so!

    that it?

im not defending the system, im explaining it. it's a stupid system. but it's there and there's not a damn thing to be done about it so im explaining why it would be a shitty thing to fuck over the people who cannot help it.

the only reason stuff was closed on sundays was so people could go to church, it wasn't because all the employers were nice and gave people a day off. I'd rather work on sunday than have to go to church.

you just explained capitalism ;) and we all know that the most capitalist nation on earth is the US.. which is ironic cos its only americans who get annoyed at me for being capitalistic back at them... i'm fucking over the poor people.. how can Americans complain about that???? they've been doing it since the 1900's...

yeah we know that... a lot of customs are religion based.. i get 2 days off at Christmas... for all you know i could be Jewish.. i still get the 2 days off.. i hate church and religion.. but having a sunday off is a nice thing... i do family stuff and generally relax... everyone should have that day off together.. its nice :)

id think it goes back further than that.

also, most americans dont complain about that. wait tables and see how the rednecks or the sunday brunch people tip. im not joking when i say church groups have left me religious flyers instead of cash. and that is why WE complain about it, becos SOME of us are smarter than that and think it's shitty to fuck over the poor. but we know we're outnumbered in our own country and cant do much about it. so we try to do what we can, like not fuck over the waitress just becos 55% of her fellow citizens are ignorant morons.

um, you guys have never studied economics have you? there is nothing inherently "wrong" with capitalism, it is just type of market structure, the same as socialism. It's not a dirty word, and it doesn't mean "fucking over the poor..." at all.

not tipping is not being "capitalist". It's being selfish, but it's actually being anti-capitalist. tipping can be seen as part of capitalism (the better performance, the more money, that's like pure capitalism).

I hate when people use terms incorrectly.
