2. you just proved my point by being utterly unable to accept any responsibility for anything and inevitably place blame on someone else for anything amiss becos god knows you have NEVER been wrong or made a mistake before.
3. i have no idea what you think i'm trying to get out of you. i said the greed in the UK and europe cannot compare to the greed in America. i havent seen you offer one bit of evidence or logic to rebut that.
4. i know you cannot address number 3. the posts you quoted to me do not address number 3 and vastly distort and misinterpret my argument to suit your purposes. mentioning saudi arabia does not address number 3, but to play along it's a good second, but still only second.
5. stay in construction. you would get humiliated in a profession that requires reason and substantive support for your positions.
1. whatever
2. I've said a good 5 or 6 times in THIS thread that I agree with you I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be wrong about.
3. I'm not TRYING to rebut that... I've said that... hmm... twice that I can think of.
4. I said that yes you proved your point for America being greedier than the UK or Europe... but I can't agree or disagree as to whether it's the greediest in the world cos I DON'T KNOW
5. I dunno, I reckon I'd make quite a good lawyer At the very least I'd have a lot of fun anyway... wind it up and watch it go

well, I'd much rather work on a Sunday (when I practically never do anything anyway..and if no-one was working on Sundays, there would be nothing to be done at all) and have the Thursday and Friday off in exchange (you get paid double on Sunday).
My point is some people are very happy to work Sundays (or nights)
my husband currently has the exact schedule you mention. he absolutely didn't mind when i too was able to have at least one of those days off, but now that i am finally a regular M-F worker, it sucks. also, a pain in the arse whenever he has gigs, which can be often....family events...want to make weekend plans, etc. it is NOT easy to just take a weekend day off where he works, doing the job he does....and while he does get 5 weeks vacation, he prefers not wsting it to take off a sunday here or there. oh and he only gets 1.5X the pay. sure, it's nice...but not nice enough for us anyway. i am hoping that soon he can make a change, and we can actually have weekends off together.
that said, i AGREE there is nothing wrong with working sundays. i mean, there has ALWAYS been people who worked sundays: doctors, nurses, train conductors, taxis, waiters/waitresses, pharmacies, gas station attendants, etc. yes, it may be consumer driven to have retail shops open on sundays - who do not btw, at least in the states, get any *premium* pay for weekend/evening work as it's expected - but it is convenient for many. i mean really, with most couples working, when are people to shop? during my childhood stores closed early and yes, were closed on sundays. why? b/c as a mostly christian country that's the 'sabbath'....? jews' sabbath is saturdays...so really, bit skewed. also, mostly stay at home moms (although not my mom ) who could shop during the week for the family. anyhoo, imho i think it makes absolute SENSE that stores be open to say 9 PM during the week, open 7 days a week, etc. it's a CHOICE to work there, etc. i did retail for years and years...never really minded working one weekend day a week at all.
in regards to tipping in the US, it is what it is. i would never 'defend' the practice b/c yes i really and fully agree that tipping IS ridiculous, and arbitrary. pay all a decent wage and be done with it, everywhere, for all things. being realistic, that just ain't gonna happen here.....this is what we have, and just as when i am in a foreign country and respect their customs...i also respect the customs of my own country, and i tip accordingly. especially knowing the situation, and how it figures into ones livelihood, most definitely. however, you bet, i wish it would be abolished.
and yes, i'd love for sales tax to be already added into the price of items - i find that much more annoying, and i loved that the first time as a teen i visited london and it was added in, i was amazed! i don't really know why we don't do it....and every state has different tax levels, some no sales tax at all, different for different items, etc...so i don't know if that's the *why* of it but it sure is a pain in the arse. c'est la vie! i find figuring the tip VERY easy, sales tax is more annoying.....but for both, it's the system we have and you simply get used to it.

hey i wish Rosa Parks had that lay down and let it all wash over you attitude.. thanks to her i can't get a frickin seat on a bus
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

yes, b/c our tipping policies require a revolt since it is equal in importance to the civil rights movement.
obviously, it just isn't important enough an "issue" for any of us to bother. so, we have to figure a tip...and/or our sales tax. oh my.
as redrock mentions, if anything, fighting for a decent wage for all employees regardles of industry, far more important. honestly, i don't know if waitstaff would truly WANT a change from the current system. personally, i think if they work in a decent restaurant, they probably make more thru tips than they would if even offered a 'decent wage.' now, if they'd actually include benefits and such, an entirely different story....and i DO support workers rights, etc, whenever i can, in the voters booth. tis all i can do.
*edit
ya know, i wonder if it's more akin to an 'american mentality'....or how it began anyway...wanting to know exactly where our $$$ is going. if the tax is listed seperately, we know exactly how much the government is taking. and it DOES vary from state to state, even WHAT you get taxed on varies greatly from state to state.
also, agreed...our tipping system may seem silly/arbitrary, but i wonder if YOUR country had such a policy in place before you even existed, how much would YOU personally do to rail against it and change it since you seem to find it so offensive? i honestly just don't think it's that important in the scheme of things.

it very well may be part of it. "Tax" is truly a dirty word in the U.S. It comes up a lot in environmental policy. It is more politically feasible to institute quantity-based carbon control (cap and trade) and than a price-based control, aka a "tax." In europe, people do not shudder at the word half as much, and as such they are more able to institute taxes to correct market failures than we here in the US.

Aside from my sig, I gotta say that the best line in the fucking movie has to be when Vinny walks into the supermarket and gets greeted with a friendly 'have a nice day' or something and he looks back toward the employee and says, 'hey, fuck you!'..
I thought I was the only one loves this movie..Doesn't seem like many have seen it..
