Krispy Kreme is evil! i don't mean that in a good way either. there's one next door to where i work and i swear, if it was legal, i'd burn the place down. the smell when they're making donuts is sickening! ugh! i used to love them, i'm not sure what happened, but now when i eat one, i feel like i'm gonna be sick....

Yeah, I think it's the sat fats, you are. That and the high sugar content. They're ok when you eat them, nothing to get excited about but ok, and then a few hours afterwards they make me very not well. I've tried them now but I wouldn't have them again.

Not even cooked Stel? I make a big bowl of greek salad and put the fried haloumi in and it's yum! :)

I've not ever had kasseri but I'd give it a go. :) Is it just sheep milk or goat as well? Like goat's cheese?

Well I don't know if all americans drown their food in syrup but they do seem to put it on things that I wouldn't even imagine doing it to.
But then yeah, I don't mind a bit of dead horse on a lot of things. :D

    lol @ dead horse.. ha!!

    no, not even cooked!!
kasseri is made from both i think? i just yelled out.. mum says sheep dad says.. cow, wtf

have you tried kefalograviera? i bet you'd like that if you're a haloumi fan

ok on to Krispy Kremes.. thank God Adelaide doesn't have a store or i'd be in trouble :o

haha! And wiki says sheep and some goat. :D I don't know that I could eat haloumi not cooked to be honest. I reckon it would be like those cheese curds the Canadians have on their poutine. I'll have to hunt out the kefalograviera, see what I think of it. I'll try anything once. :D

Yeah, trust me about the Krispy Kremes, you'd be fine girl. Truly, most people I know that have had them won't be repeating the experience. They really are strange.

haha :D i'd definitely go with wiki!

i only learnt what poutine was recently (through foxtel of course ;)) and wouldn't mind trying it.. have to try everything once!! right with you there on that one.. have you tried it before?

:D Well I've got this theory that if people really knew what they were eating they'd never eat! :D Not everybody can stomach the idea of sheep's milk, maybe your Dad's HOPING its made of cow's milk? :D

Never tried poutine, but I'm thinking but for the cheese curds, it will be just like chips and gravy down the pub. :D Anyway, I'll give it a go. :)

toronto is good for eats - but it's all imported from everywhere else ... you can find pretty much authentic food from all parts of the world here ... there is good food at all price ranges ...
  • mertmert Posts: 167
Poutine is the food of the gods, especially after a night drinking! Soaks up all that beer so well..... :) Messy though, when you combine sloppy food and sloppy drunks. I've washed it off the walls, floors, clothes more times that I care to recount....

But before trying it make sure that it is actually cheese curd. Lots of places put regular mozzarella on it and call it poutine.

Ok, it's at my sisters house... but if I remember correctly (which I probably don't, only made it twice) the ingredients are onions, cranberry sauce, white wine vinegar, brown sugar, cornflower, ketchup, tomato puree and I THINK that might be all and I've no idea of the measurements :o but you can pretty much mess around with them til you get them how you want it though. It's yum!

I'm coming back to the Poutine again cause I see your are on the fence with it.
Words can't describe how good it is.
The best thing I have ever ate was Poutine in Mount Tremblant Quebec, it was a kinda fancier restaurant in the village. For some reason I ordered the Poutine over steak and other great things (actually i think the menu said "world famous poutine"). By the end of the meal I ate 2 and others ordered them after their mains too.

Also I have been living in Oz for the last 4 months and I have to say you have great restaurants here. And a lot of the "bring you own" ones allow you to bring beer not just wine. So it's easy to go out for a meal have a few cheap bears and go to a bar.

I must say though Veg-A-Mite is the worst spread on earth, many Aussie friends always offer it in the morning.. Terrible !

Thanks Hels. :) Might have to try that recipe. :)
And I'm definitely down for the mexican. :D We have a great little Mexican restaurant around the corner here that I've been going to on and off for about 15 years. I love the place. It'll be good to try some while I'm in the US, especially the fish tacos. :)

Oh and sweet stuff isn't my deal when I've been drinking. It's all about the savoury, so waffles just wouldn't do it!

:D Oh I'll be trying to poutine. I'm fascinated by it because I'd never heard of it before this thread, so I'll give it a go. Hopefully I can convince someone to share it with me so I can have a taste and see what I think, I'm just not convinced about squeaky cheese curds, but yeah, if I was game enough to try black pudding in Ireland, then poutine shouldn't be any trouble.

    Vegemite ROCKS! :p

So yeah, anything you can think of, snacks, home style cooking, drinks, restaurants all that jazz. :D

Tell me your favorites please. :)
If you're in Seattle at all, one of the specialties is cedar-smoked salmon. Just delicious!

    :D Well I'm not sure.

There was a popcorn shop at one of the shopping centres a while back that had all different flavours of popcorn, I'm sure they had something like that, but I'm struggling to find the name of the shop now.

And we have lollygobbleblissbombs but those are mostly sweet, although they were a little salty when I was a kid but I think they're changed the recipe since then. :(

    :D Yeah, they're pretty yummy!!

Caramel coated popcorn with nuts. :) I've had some recently, you can get them in the snack food aisle at the supermarket, but they were much nicer back in the day. There's not as much nuts in them now and the pieces aren't as big, and I think they've taken out a lot of the salt.

I'm trying to find you a link Elana, but they seem a little elusive!
Maybe Tim didn't grow up with them so he might not know of their existence. They were big in the 70s and early 80s but they're still around, just not as good.

    Hmmm....don't know cracker jacks.

Here's a pic of Dave O'Neill surrounded by them but it doesn't really do them justice. As a kid growing up, the blissbombs where all clustered together. You could reach into the bag and pull out a HUGE big cluster of popcorn and nuts all glued together with toffee/caramel and you'd have a hard time eating a piece in one go because it would be too big for your mouth. :D Now days it seems that it's just popcorn covered in caramel. No big "BOMBS". :(

But yeah, grill him on them, although he might not know them. If they don't have them in SA I can send some across to him next time I go to the supermarket. :) Just let me know. :)
