Shrimp po' boys are battered, deep fried shrimp on a hoagie type roll with mayo, ketchup, pickles, lettuce, onions and tomatoes. Delicious! Cheese steaks are also sandwiches on rolls with thinly sliced, chopped steak, sauteed peppers, onions and melted, gooey cheese. You got it on the gravy fries!:)

Oh! :D I'm liking the sound of them Prawn thingies! :p:D

Thanks nocode, I'll have to hunt one of them up while I'm there. :)

Yikes!!! Nope!!! Not that there's anything wrong with that! :D
But nah, not me, I'd have to be on the verge of wetting my pants to go to a public toilet and even then there's a good chance I'd rather wet myself than go in. :D

    where are you visiting?
Hard to make a suggestion with knowing your destinations.

Try chowhound.com, I have found it to be pretty reliable.
For the east coast, gotta suggest steamed maine or nova scotia LOBSTER
Also, try some of our steaks, I know Aus has some outstanding beef, but you gotta try a prime US steak.

    Try Outback Steakhouse.
I hear the Bloomin Onion is real good.
    :p

You need the perfect cheeseburger, fries and shake combo.
    All American.
And don't get it at Chili's or Applebee's or one of those places.

    Try some Tex-Mex.
And yes, soul food is awesome.

Don't forget to stock up on Sloppy Joe mix to smuggle home.
    hahah

    And Buffalo wings.

I've got to say, I'm not a fan of traditional "American Cuisine" at all. Most is too heavy and makes my arteries hurt just thinking about it. :o

I read you will be in California in a different thread? I LOVE California cuisine.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_cuisine

"The emphasis of California Cuisine is on the use of fresh, local ingredients which are often acquired daily at farmers markets. Menus are changed to accommodate the availability of ingredients in season."

Also see cuisine of California for the various influences too.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuisine_of_California

I have to say, I've travelled to over 20 countries and California definitely has THE BEST produce! So be sure to have lots! :D Also try the Mexican food!

Someone mentioned chains such as Applebees. I guess go there once for the kitsch factor, but after that, stick with local places that have specialty dishes based out of that area, and you can't go wrong. :)

I would also say try fresh oysters. Best ever on the northwest coast! Also, salmon but preferably from Alaska. The greens/salads are also great here. Just try anything fresh/local and you can't go wrong. Most good restaurants here cook with local/fresh ingredients so I would definitely try what is on the menu. :) Can't wait to see you!

I'm sorry but I'm gonna have to veto the fresh oyster suggestion.

If you want some real oysters try the ones off the coast of Belgium or France in the North Sea. Now that is some real oyster!

As far as suggestions, you should go to a nice steak house. Steak in the US is amazing! Also, go get a real burger somewhere.

Yeah, I checked out the cheese curds on wiki. Apparently in some places they're deep fried. Not sure what I think about them at this point.

Yeah, the squeaky isn't thrilling me I have to be honest. I can imagine the texture in order for that to happen and I'm thinking I probably won't like it. But I'll try anything once! :D

Going to be in LA, Seattle and Vancouver mostly this trip. Oh well and a couple of other spots around the globe but they're mostly just stopovers.
I've googled up a pretty good list of things to do and see, was just looking for a spot of local knowledge is all. :)

haha! :D Wish you could have seen the investigating that went on here after I stumbled across it on the googles. I could see the place in the pic but couldn't make out the name so then I was hunting down fast food places in Santa Monica starting with W and finally found their website by matching up the logo. It was fascinating Tim, because I'd never heard of it. And what a menu they have!! :D That's what got me thinking I should check a few places out. Not that I'm a big junk food/fast food eater but I must admit the place intrigued me! :D
